different neighboorhoods?

Post by skeetsh00ter » Thu Aug 16, 2007 5:55 pm

So are there typically areas where one group (mostly thinking age-wise) of people tend to camp? Not that i would be upset if there weren't a lot of people my age around me, just wondering.

Also, as an aside. why doesn't the BRC layout align NS?! would it make too much sense to have 12:00 as N and 6:00 as south?

The way they lay it our there are easy ways to tell people direction. N/E/S/W don't work well in a round city, but the clock and alphabetical streets work great.

There is Kidsville, other than that it's a big mismatching of youngins and oldins.

BRC is aligned the way it is so the 10-2 oclock open portions look farthest out to the open desert.

The black Rock Desert runs Southwest - to - Northeast. Thats why it isnt aligned N/S. Its easier to orient BRC, rather than chage the desert.

re: North South orientation - I think the question is why is the city rotated, facing the way it does, on a map -- if you look at a sat view (on google earth, for example) the city looks more like a "C" than a "U"

"4:00" radial spoke was south in 2006
"4:30" was south in the previous years, and I believe again this year.

My guess is something to do with facing everything out to the open playa - the black rock desert stretches out for miles and miles. Not sure, but likely other factors at play as well.

ok, that makes sense about looking towards the open playa.

I was asking only b/c i was looking at google maps and the BRC 07 map at the same time...it bothered me a little.

thanks for the input!

Neighborhoods kind of exist, in the loosest sorts of way. Some camps join forces to form villages. Sometimes it's just big groups of inter-connected friends. Sometimes it's around a common theme, age group, sexual orientation, or something else completely. Take a look at the list of registered theme camps and you'll get an idea of the kinds of diversity out there.

A lot of people in their seventies and eighties tend to be in rvs.
But not all.

The city is rotated so that all the loud sound camps can point their speakers out into the longest length of open playa and not get a refection from the mountains.

:)

2:00 Spoke: large Sound Camps - Ontz Ontz Ontz

The whole 3:00 spoke and the plaza are the great Aztlan La-Raza experience. This is where you can drive by and hire yourself a crew of Mexicans for all your camp physical labor needs. Carne Asada and Cervesa for everyone AYAYAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The 4:00 spoke is the low income housing projects. These are the body-a-night projects. Watch out for gang-bangers and especially kids spilling motor oil in the intersections and then bike-jacking you. The little urchins are vicious so if you are going to large scale sound at 2:00 just blaze by the 4:00 spoke as fast as you can and don't under any circumstances make any eye contact.

Kidsville and all the pedophiles are on the 5:30 spoke, if that is your "age group" ;)

6:30 is the lesbians, lesbians dipped in chocolate and lesbians on stilts and Irish refugees. The lesbians like the little green leprechauns, go figure. It must be a midget fetish of some kind.

7:00 to 7:30 is single white males hoping to get layed area. A lot of lotion gets used here for , well .... not getting layed, yeah, thats it.

8:00 is Stiffy Lube and penetration village. Gay, Glamour Gay, Drag, Queens, tops, bottoms, assless chaps... You know, a man's man king of place. ;) Best fucking glory holes on the Playa.

The 9:00 spoke and the surrounding area is where all the perverts, sexual deviants and shirtcockers live. They just naturally gravitate to that spot.

10:00 Ztnoo Ztnoo Ztnoo .... Oontz Oontz Oontz!

There you have it, the city guide to neighborhoods of the Playa.

Yep, back in San Francisco, in the late 80's, early 90's. They had these projects down in the Mission, I think near 24th street. I witnessed the kids personally car-jack a guy by pouring motor oil at the stop sign.

They must have been no older than 10 or 12 but there was a shitstorm of them with pipes and sticks and they beat the living crap out of the guy, took his ride and then scrambled back into the projects.

I u-turned my bike and high-tailed out-a-there. I felt liek a chicken-shit for a long time after that event.
