what size evap pond for a two person camp?

Post by glint421 » Fri Aug 17, 2007 1:16 pm

In previous years I've just packed out my grey water but this year I would like to have an evaporation pond. I've seen lots of designs for big camps but what about my two person camp...we've planned our meals to not require dishwashing and don't have any plans for showers...so what size pond if you make at max a half gallon of grey water a day? I'm thinking some sort of baking pan will work but i don't want to bring anything too small and have it not work.

Thanks!

My evaporation plans for 1-4 people are usually the following:

* Water jug with the top cut off for gross stuff. This is usually toothpaste spit or small amounts of water from dishwashing. If you leave it in the sun, it will mostly evaporate. If not, it's probably such a small amount that you can dump it into a small bottle with a lid (liquor bottle?) or just right into the trash bag.

* Tarp with the corners staked or weighted down. This won't hold the results of a camp shower or anything, but I always shower with a spray bottle pre-mixed with soap and a little skin lotion, and maybe the occasional splash from clean cooler water. The tarp will get a little slick if two people shower in a row, but no real standing water should accumulate, so no frame is needed to keep it in.

For the standard black visqueen evap pond, 8 sqare feet per person will dispose of most greywater & even allow a shower every other day.

Yep, the CO got it. 2 people, 4x4 pond.

You could use one of 'em cement mixing tubs.

Doesn't 4x4 = 16 square feet.

Exactly! That's why for 2 people, at 8 square feet each, you get 16 square feet, which is 4x4.

i can visualize how much grey water i'll have daily based on previous experience...so i guess it would be most helpful to know the maximum depth of the water before it stops working

make the sidewalls of your evap pond out of 1x2 and it will be difficult to get to deep. max about 1 inch deep water.
