Pedialite vs. Gatoraid vs. Emergency

Post by Wunder » Fri Aug 17, 2007 11:44 pm

I read an article recently that said Emergency was better for dehydration than Gatoraid or Pedialite. Sorry I don't have the link to refer to here. It was mainly in reference to weight lifters who loose alot of water right before a competition.

Alot of people use Pedialite and Gatoraid on the Playa and I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this.

Thanks
Wunder

Pedialite vs. Gatorade v. Emergency

Post by DrPeffer » Sat Aug 18, 2007 12:02 am

Unless you have something unique about your metabolism needing that much scrutiny (diabetes or something), the differences between various electrolyte solutions are negligible. The amounts of sodium and potassium might differ from one to the next, but they're all about the same, and as long as you're getting a few shots of the stuff every day, you'll be fine.

In fact, I'm the only one in my camp who even cares about the electrolyte stuff. Everybody else seems to drink just plain water. And nobody's died yet. BTW: I use the Gookinaid.

If you're only drinking plain water, then as long as you get some salt in your food (which is kinda inevitable), you're fine.

I bring Gatorade to the Playa but I always dilute it about 50% with water.
Have you ever noticed how gatorade tends to make you more thirsty for the stuff ? A Doctor friend of mine said a more thirst quenching way to drink it is a 50% water dilute. It still tastes good but is imho alot more satisfying. And it goes farther !

Give it a try.

A lot of the sports drinks are heavy on the high fructose corn syrup. Personally, that's what makes me thirsty.

I usually use EmergenC, but I know a lot of people who swear by Gook-in-Aid
It's going to be alright.

Emergen-C
Looks like it has some B complex in it, useful when somebody is stressed.

I'll just take my vitamins thanks, emergen-c tastes nasty to me. I gag it up. That can't be healthy.

The little Japanese liquid vitamins with a dose of caffeine, now there's a boost.

Water Works

Post by munney » Sat Aug 18, 2007 12:22 pm

I dont dig on the Fructose Corn action, so I bring the Emerengne-C, however I usually forget to use it.

 Water is your friend, however one does lose vital fluids and minerals pertty quick out there, so on your way out, get a BUNCH of Unripend Bananas, so the will become ripe as the week progresses, Eat one a Day, AND Drink your Water. ..............

Another tip it to take Potasium and Magnesium pills with you and Drink lots of Water, (Piss Clear), and Take them with Food, (Yes, EAT) and have fresh Bananas, or Dried Bananas from Trader Joes

Blah Blah Blah, Dont be cramping or crashing in my camp or I might do something to your body in your state of regret.

I make a point of having a few double olive dirty martinis every day just for the electrolytes. But then again, I'm a happy alcoholic ...

I've tried the emergen-C's and been pretty happy. A few campmates last year went for the Emergen-C and opted to mix it with a PBR instead of water in the morning. They swore it was a surefire hangover cure. Not sure about that combo, try at own risk!
