Fire at Tahoe dirves bears into Reno

Speaking of being green, the lack of forest after the recent fire is driving animals from their formerly native habitat:

Executive summary: Black bear in the parking lot at Albertson's on Keystone - this is a store often used by burners because of its ease of access on and off 80.

Louise reminds us, "Please remember, bears ARE NOT allowed at Burning Man, so don't even try to lure one into your vehicle."

It's not just the results from the Angora fire thats affecting the bears. It's also because last winter was dry. According to todays Nevada Appeal newspaper, Carson City has to date 1.77" of precipitation as opposed to the 6.48" that we should have. Like all other wild animals, the bears instinct is survival and they go where the food is. Newbies to this area don't expect to see a bear in Reno. Not to mention Carson City or even Dayton. In late summer of 2000, a bear was traped in Dayton near the golf course. There are a few bears in the Pinenut mountains to the south of here so it was relocated up there. In Genoa, south of Carson City, it's in the making for residents to have "bear proof" trash cans. There was another fire at the lake on Saturday the 18th. Only burned 35 acres but also took 5 houses and one "outbuilding." We were at Wild Oats in Reno looking for BIOTA water when we saw the smoke. Then we went to the Silver Sox baseball game during the fires final hours.
