All of the shake-lights and low-end dynamo-crank lights that I've seen are utter crap, indeed. To put a working generator into a cheap light takes windings of copper that are MUCH more expensive than a few button lithium cells and a diode so they're spread very thinly.
Regarding Darkwads- I've ended up spilling numerous delicious beverages when unlit dumbshits staggered into my path. Unforgivable.

Galax- You must really, really, REALLY want to go. I hope that all the hardship and sacrifice is worth it, and that it's all that you hoped it would be. Your husband obviously loves you very much.

Thank you very much for the help on that. The craft store I worked at sold some crank lights for $10 or so that seemed all right (the store actually had some placed at the registers as emergency lights in case the power went out, so they must have trusted them), but they haven't carried them since early December.

Don't worry, I'll find some way to make myself visible! I really don't want to be a pain for everybody like that. As I said earlier, it looks like I'll probably be able to borrow a solar lamp from my roommate's parents, so that should work. She told me they are pretty bright and shine all night, and it would also save me from having to buy batteries. One off them is even shaped like a tiki torch, and she suggested I could carry that around like a staff or walking stick, and drive it into the ground back at camp when I'm not walking around with it.

Yes, he does. I'll never be able to thank him enough for this. Even though I've been looking forward to this so much, I feel guilty about going without him, but he really wants me to go. I plan on volunteering at BRCPO for a while, so hopefully I can send him a letter from there. He also asked me to sew some scraps of his old clothes into the patchwork sarong I made, so I'll have something of him there with me. Okay, I'll stop with the mushy stuff before everybody starts throwing up now!

A good way to be seen is to , ... Wait lets start over,

1. Get a part time Job at Wal-Mart with No Benefits and Low Wages
2. Take your Paycheck and use it to buy One roll of Duct-tape
3. Tape the Solar lights to your Forehead, and BackHead
4. Stay out of my way, Cause I'll be aimin' for ya.
