I have heard repeated and consistently un-refuted reports that this year the Playa is quite soft and dusty. Most comments have been that this may be "The Year of Dust" but I'm more concerned with anchoring stuff down.
Just how deep does the soft part of the Playa go this year? I have 18" rebar stakes although I have observed in past years that 12" stakes would have been adequate. How far down do you have to go before you hit solid Playa? Will the stakes I have be okay or should I hunt around for longer ones now?
Perhaps this will be "The Year of Flying Tents".

Just hack out divots w/ a claw hammer or shovel and then drive the stakes. Bring extra cord & stakes and double them up on the windward side, or something like that.
