Metal Artist-Special Playa Memorial

Post by robertrhu » Fri Aug 17, 2007 11:32 pm

Hello all...

I am looking for a metal artist (welder, steel or other weldable material) to work on a very special project. The project is a memorial for my son who very sadly passed away recently. He is a very special soul who radiates love throughout the universe in a way I have never experienced in my life. I am seeking to honor and share this love with all of you on the Playa. He was conceived on the Playa so I feel it is a perfect place to share his life with the world.

I had an artist who was going to do the work but he backed out at the final hour due to him suddenly needing to move. This is why I am posting this last minute. I've been on the hunt for an artist in Reno but as of yet I have been unable to find someone who, one, can do it in time and, two, who I can afford. So I had the thought that maybe there would be someone ON the Playa who might be interested/able to work on the piece after we arrive. I would bring all the raw materials and help in any way I possibly could. I have no experience working with steel or with welding. But the inspiration I have had for the design calls for steel or some similar metal.

The piece will be fairly small; maybe 2.5 feet tall. There would be several shapes to cut out and then weld together. The plan is to display the piece in a secluded space somewhere on the Playa, fastened securely into the ground. The design is of a heart container with a flame (not real fire) sitting inside the heart. I have a basic drawing that you could look at.

If this sound like something that you might be able to do and might have some passion for please contact me. We can then chat and I can provide an image and description.

I'm very much hoping to find someone to help. It is very important to me to accomplish this. I was very divinely inspired to create this and so very much want to see it come to fruition. Any help would be immensely appreciated. Even if you know someone who might be interested please let me know or pass the word along.

Thanks you so much for your time.

Namaste

I'm not the best welder in the world but I could probably do the job if you can't find someone else. I,m best with an oxygen/acetylene torch. Also I have not welded on the playa before. You should ask around and see if anyone knows what the deal is for avoiding moop because welding can some times be a little messy. If you could show up with all of the pieces precut that would make things a lot easier. Then we could probably just braise the thing together with a propane/Map gas torch.

Hey Willy

Thanks so much for the reply. And so much for your generous offer. Would you have a torch to work with while out there? I definitely could ask around about MOOP impact.

I'm working on finding a place that can do the plasma cutting here in Reno. The timeline is really making that difficult though. So we shall see. I've considered the possibility of just having some torch cut everything. I would just bring the raw materials to the Playa. That would be much more challenging and less precise. But it might be fine. Do you think that's feasible? Is that something you could do?

I'll keep you posted on status. I should know more tomorrow.

Thanks again Willy...

I don't have the space to bring my cutting torch, but I could bring my small brazing torch. If you bring or find a torch I could do the cutting for you. Cutting metal on the playa sounds very moopy but I think I know of a place we could do it. Also will you be able to take this thing home in one piece if not you might want to consider a method of construction other than welding. Maybe you could use wood or thin sheet metal that could be cut by hand with sheers and attached to some sort of frame.

I would be happy to help

I can weld just about anything. tig, mig, torch, Steel, stainless, bronze, copper, brass.

Are you still going to try and make this happen? If so I'd love to be part of a metal installation. Metal working is what I like to do.
I won't be able to bring any of my equipment as I am flying in from the east coast.
contact me directly if you still need help
