When should I get there?

When should I get there?

Post by joeljoeljoel » Mon Aug 20, 2007 4:39 am

Hi - this will be my first time to burning man and I'm planning on driving up solo and making friends there.

Right now I have only wed-fri off from work and am mulling over borrowing vacation for mon-tues. Does it make a big difference in the experience to arrive in the initial wave of set up? If I show up on Wednesday night will I be able to make friends and find a decent place to camp?

Cheers!

Where are you coming from ? Is most of Wednesday going to be driving time It will take you a good part of the day to make it through the front gate, stand there with your jaw wide open, get oriented and settle on a comfortable place to camp. There are many open camp spaces, but may take you a while to catch a vibe you like. You will do OK making friends anytime you arrive.

Also it will take 24 to 48 hours for the full effects of the pills they give you at the gate to manifest, depending on your metabolism.. If you want the "full experience" I would ask for the faster acting green ones. Good luck and welcome ... you are in for a treat.

I took the blue one!

As to the OP, I would try to get out there as early as possible, only because it's interesting to see the vibe of the city change from day-to-day as more people show up.

Also, it's such an expense to get out there, it's definitely worth it to get as many days in as possible (employer-willing, of course...)

Have fun

On the other hand, maybe you'd enjoy it mid week when things start happening.
It varies.
In any case, make up your mind to enjoy your experience as is rather that 2nd guessing yourself and saying "I shoulda..."

Personally, my favorite time on the Playa is Monday and Tuesday. I love being among the first on the playa. I'm entirely bummed that we won't get there till Tuesday nite this year.

Try to get there when you arrive. Regardless of the day, this will be more difficult than you may imagine.
