Communicating inside BM

Post by Jane785 » Sat Aug 18, 2007 8:44 am

How can people communicate with each other inside BM [assuming it is true about no mobiles and no internet]?

Hey, that's what we are doing for the first time this year (only took 5 years to figure that one out!)

It will be great to let camp mates know where we are going, when something cool is going on, take down people's email info and cool stuff like that!

WOW, we are almost home. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO ready to be covered in dust! I want it on my skin, in my hair, even in my butt crack!

Tie a string to 2 cups, and keep them with you at all times, that way no matter where you are, just pull the string tight and your buddy can hear you, or follow the string back to where you are.

The "messager thingy in the playa info shade" sounds interesting... Could you please tell how it works?

It's just a big bulletin board. Write your message, preferably with the name of the person you're trying to connect with in BIG BOLD LETTERS and tape it to the board. The catch is that they need to find your note among the hundreds of others....

There is also a set of computers hitting a database into which you put your info so your friends can find you and you them, also at Playa Info on the gate side (usually) of Center Camp.

By the way, when posting something on a public board, your best bet for the recipient finding it is to put their name in

really big letters.

Everyone who can read is strongly conditioned to notice their own name. It's hands down the easiest way to catch the eye of the person you're trying to reach, so starting off with "Meet me at 3:15 and Boreal" or "Wanna come dance" is rather less useful.

I realise this may sound overobvious, but then, people's ability to overlook the obvious astonishes me on a regular basis...

koan

Post by swampdog » Wed Aug 22, 2007 9:52 am

Don't know how much help the OP found here. It's a big fookin' place, with no phones, no cell phones, no email, no mapquest. You can camp with your friends, you can know in advance where they'll be and go visit them, you can set up a meeting time (noon on Tuesday at center camp or such) and you can try leaving messages on the bulletin board/message center at center camp. There's also a camp locator database at center camp. All of which may fail. Your friend might not be where they thought they'd be, playa time doesn't match up to regular clocks - you can be wearing a watch (horrors!) and be diligently on the way to your meetup when - wow, what's that! That's the most incredible thing I ever saw! and an hour later your friend is tapping their toes in annoyance (if they made it at all and didn't get distracted by something/someone shiny).

So a lot of the sarcastic answers here are because "How can you communicate inside BM" is sort of a zen koan. It's easy. And, it's impossible. Both are true.

Edited to add: As someone notes above, you can use walkie talkies - the "FRS" style are easily available for cheap. It can be tough, though, since I think the available channels get very jammed up and your friend has to be switched on when you want to call.

Also, as someone mentions, I think the black rock post office will do on-playa deliveries. The Disgruntled Postal Workers will do their best to mess with your mind in the process, but it could work for you. If you know where your friend is camping.

I can't believe no one mentioned using a HELIOGRAPH! A giant mirror and sunlight-- and during the day there is plenty of sunlight. A night, a giant light can substitute for the sun. Just be sure the mirror is high enough to be seen across the entire city.

So does every registered theme camp receive the form love letter about Friday via the BRC Post Office? It's hysterical! I know we got one last year and again this year. Obviously someone's fun idea for a gift! Thanks!
A plan is what you vary from.

Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

You can always wander in and out of camps hollering for your friend. One of my friends found me this way.

Hugs are good, too.

For those who didn't notice, playa info glitched badly this year.
You had to search messages to get your messages.
They didn't pull up with your name.
Changes often didn't go through, as well.
