Post by Yasmin » Wed Aug 22, 2007 3:26 pm

Anyone have any tips of what to say to theborder officials when crossing the border? don't exactly want to lie but not sure saying I'm going to Burning Man is the best idea either..

what are other people doing?

I can't imagine border officials having a clue what burning man is. (And if they did, they're more likely to be friendly.)
It's hard to have a normal conversation with someone with 6' acrylic rods strapped to your back.

Just tell them you're going on a camping trip in the Nevada desert. It's true, and you should have the gear to prove it.
It's going to be alright.

Why not? You're not going to carry anything naughty across the border anyway, are you? No, of course you're not. Anyhoo, it's helpful to remember that those cute li'l crossing guards are basically human lie detectors. Don't lie. Say you're going camping if you can't bring yourself to say 'Burningman'.

You're joking, right? Up here in Washington State they can probably tell you this year's street names. There's like a million Vancouver-ites alone who'll pass through in the next few days.

Ahh, I'm recalling the border guards I dealt with when I passed through at Detroit. I imagine they're slightly different than the west-coast ones.
