The Burning Teahouse

Post by Desert Wind » Mon Sep 22, 2003 12:04 am

I have a grand vision for an artproject for 04' and am need of serious help if we are to manage it...

probably beyond the temple where the johhny on the spot or fallen chandelier was (or at the temple spot if he doesnt do it in o4')

we are envisoning a buring teahouse to balance the cafe...

the teahouse would be constructed of wood...have 8 sides..all pillow and floor seating and a staff working 24 hours gifting cups of tea (green, persian, mate) and other goodies including ice water and snacks...

we would place a few typewriters for people to inscribe the masterpiece and leave some musical instrucments (guitars..didj...harmonium...no drums..maybe tablas....) for people to pick up...
....and have sunrise zazen sessions...(and perhaps a space where people can lead classes of something or whatever)

we feel this would be a good place because the open playa needs a mellow chill space....

...
ok thats the idea..and now for the logistics...
i am a 5 year solo burner....
that means I have always camped alone by choice and spend most of the event meeting people i have never met before....
this is good, but when it comes to a large scale art project, help is needed...

the other problems are that..
1- i am out of the country most of the year...returning 1 month before the burn....so i would be unable to orginaze mass logistics
2- i usally dont have an excess of money
3- beyond basic motor functions, i have zero carpentry skills

so....
what we are basicly looking for is a group of individuals who have the know how and passion to work with us to build and burn this Teahouse...
..what I can offer from my part is supplying of the tea and managing and organizing the staffing of the Teahouse during the event...

...and we feel it would be good if the teahouse would be built and functional by tuesday at the latest...

so there is the line...
any bites?

sounds like something i'd like to do. and i think i'd be useful to this project.

i'm in the bay area pretty much year round and am extremely well connected in the burner community. i have money to spend on materials and have enough friends who are well employed so as to spread the costs. i can't volunteer my fiancee's services ( he can build or fix just about anything ) but i can assure that i can sand, saw, drill and nail with the best of them. post me off the board for specifics.

I was playing with a similar idea, myself! I would love to be involved with this, and can supply my tea skills (and perhaps bake thousands of tea biscuits?) I also envisioned some massage, aromatherapy stations, and mellow performance art. Any thoughts? Please contact me if I could help at all! (Unfortunately I live in Ohio, but can make it to the playa early if necessary for building and whatnot.)

Sounds like an interesting idea, but how are you going to supply water for this project?

Let's see...most health regulations can be sidelined as long as it's clear you're only inviting your guests (all 30,000) to come into your camp and have some tea with you. That's harder if it's an installation out in the middle of the playa. You'll save a lot of hassles if you only give tea to people who bring their own cups but it will probably cut down on your clientele. If you provide them, make sure you've got some way to dispose of them yourself.

Personally, I think it would be great if you had a way to bake thousands of tea cakes out on the playa -big brick wood burning ovens or something - but that may well bring the attention of Ye Olde Hhealf Infpectorf.

Poof! Poof! POOF!

I read that so that you were making tea CUPS on the playa, in a kiln like the whistle camp on 3:00 Plaza in 03. I was all for that, but couldn't quite figure out why the health people would care.

Oh well.

I think having people bring their own cups is a great idea, takes a lot of pressure off of the staff?
of course the building would have to seal up for dust storms and open to let the breeze through, maybe doors on either end
I can volunteer both on and off playa for this. I have moderate carpentry skills, tools and enthusiasm. I live in SF, so if more people want to organize here, I'm defintely down.

Maybe there's a third option? I noticed that somebody wants to start a ceramics camp.

Maybe one might ask BMORG to locate the teahouse near the ceramics camp? Encourage people to make their own teacups at the ceramics camp and bring them into the teahouse.

I didn't read that in the same way. What I saw was a tea giveway, and a concern that the health department might get involved if one provided the teacups instead of having the visitors bring their own.

I'm guessing that the issue is dishwashing, not dishmaking.
