I WAS ASKED IF I WAS IN A CULT BY A SOCIAL WORKER!
My sons teacher is affraid of my witchy ways and called CPS.This is like her third try.(strike three) Anyway she wanted me investigated because she felt BM was too evil and full of baddie things for my son of whom I probably subject to henious evil and wild orgys and beatings.
I told them to butt out,but if they must know,my son was too young for orgys and beatings(ie TOA) and that heinious evil resides inthe hearts of the ignorant and intollerant.
Im sueing. Creative Arts Charter in SF is a bad school.DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS THERE

Unfortunately I think we live in a world where not everyone is capable of respecting or appreciating what we do and why we do it. For this reason I tend to keep certain things about my life private. I tell my boss/coworkers that I'm going "camping" every year. Would it cause a problem for me to tell them what I'm actually doing? Probably not, but they don't really need to know and I don't really need to find out. I understand that this information probably came from your son and his desire to share his experience. It's a difficult lesson to teach, not sharing your positive experiences with others because of what they might say/do/think, but that's the default world.

as much as it nauseates me to hear a story like this, i'll be surprised if you prevail in the courts. the schools and the courts fit hand and glove from what i've seen (CPS serving as lackey between the two), and both have immense difficulty appreciating and protecting the individual and her freedoms.

Seriously, the gay parallel is not that far off. If people perceive burners as "those freaks", the best way to convince them otherwise is to show them that they have coworkers and aquaintances (I assume your real friends know), who they've always gotten along just fine with and are decent people, that do in fact head to the playa every year to burn shit. If Alchemy's teacher nemesis knew more burners (and she probably does without knowing it, living in San Francisco and working in a "Creative Arts" school), she'd probably chill out. A kid should not have to shut up about his really cool experiences because of fear of what society thinks.
Of course, I do have it easy myself, working in theater full time.
Hey Alchemy, I'm wondering, what are you actually suing them for? Harrassment? Just curious. I hope you'll have decent luck in the S.F. courts; didn't Mayor Willie Brown declare a "Burning Man Day" last year?
BTW, this is an interesting twist on the "Should kids be allowed at Burning Man" discussion, which I hope not to ressurect by mentioning. Anyone curious should check out the older threads, it's pretty hashed out there.

Kelly,
Your point is certainly a valid one, however you have to be willing to live with the consequences too. I worked in children's social services for many years and finally left because of the bureaucracy and inconsistency so prevalent in the system. I saw healthy, normal kids drug through the system because the grandparents didn't feel like they were getting enough time with the grandkids (there is no law that says grandparents get to spend time with their grandkids). I also saw kids who were chronically abused be reunited with their abusive parents only to repeat the cycle over and over again. There was no rhyme or reason to the judges rulings in family court, and because the court is closed to the media and public, there is almost no scrutiny of what goes on.
I have no problems defending my lifestyle and my actions, but I certainly wouldn't want to risk loosing my kids (if and when I have kids), because I wanted to give people information that was really none of their business to begin with.

You should sue that school. That is absolutely absurd, Burning Man is about as inapropriate for a kid as san francisco itself. I am certain that You dont let your child wander into say TOA or Juffy Lube any more than you would let him wander into the Tenderloin alone at midnight. And if He were to wander in TOA or Juffy Lube I have a feeling burners would do the right thing as opposed to what might happen in say the Tenderloin, although San Franciso is pretty friendly and someone might scoop him up and call you. That teacher really needs to mhob. I had one of those who strip searched me when I was 10 because she thought I was being beaten! At least that is what she said... the pervert.
I took the road less traveled, and now I would like to go back and find the paved one.
having seen some social services in action, i've found that (without prodding by outside forces, like grandparents) they tend to be underinvolved, rather than overinvolved.
are you sure there aren't other issues (like, say, typing in all caps) that might be in effect here as well?
while there are many burners who i find to be above the normal rank and file in terms of a number of attributes, there are just as many that i'd really not have someone else use as an example when judging me.

Agreed, the point I was trying to make was that the squeeky wheel gets the grease, this can be a good and a bad thing, because sometimes people use CPS as a weapon (i.e. I don't like what you're doing so I'm going to call CPS and tell them you are abusive). I still think that social services tends to under react to claims of abuse and neglet as a general rule.having seen some social services in action, i've found that (without prodding by outside forces, like grandparents) they tend to be underinvolved, rather than overinvolved.
Also, you can't sue the school or the teacher for anything they have reported to CPS. Teachers and most other people that work with children are what's known as "Mandatory Reporters" and are required by law to report anything that could even remotely be viewed as abuse or neglect. This was my reason for posting the comments above, and maybe why it's a good idea to keep some of your activities a little more private.

I looked up the school this afternoon. Not that the way we measure teacher perfomance in the US doesn't suck, but most of the teachers at your kids school perform below averge. Maybe you should consider pulling your kid outta there anyway.

Uh...You mean
this ISN'T a cult????
Then who was that guy that
I gave all of my money to on the playa this year?
(no...his name wasn't "Larry")
He was wearing some kind of gourd thingy "you know where,"
and he promised me "salvation for my soul"
(or was is "salivation on my sole?)
Uh...Uh...
and that colored "kool-aid" that I drank at somewhere called "pinkys"
...was it all a dream?
(no...honestly...It is obvious that our social services and school systems are suffering. What a sad reality for our country.)

This is so suprising to me that you would have a problem with a school named after the creative arts, the title of the school must lie.
I would think that the kids who are ignored, and left to fear who they really are would be in much more danger than those who had parents as burners.
In fact, one of friends has burner parents ( she's only eighteen), and judging from her remarkable maturity and intellectual ability I'd say that counter-cultural things like buring man are like vitamins for kids. They thrive on it and become well rounded adults who are able to see the entire picture.
I wish my parents had taken me to burning man, perhaps I wouldn't have felt so out of place growing up if I had known that difference was a good thing.

Heaven's going to burn your eyes
uh, i have a cult...
there are drugs (at least til the money runs out) and followers(except i can't seem to get them to show up for band practice) and black arts(or, at least, art that turns your hands black).
there's even kool-aid (no, wait, all i've got is jello, power-ade and some juice).
not much of a cult, i know.
it beats being a public school teacher or a social worker (been there, quit that).

Ive actually bookmarked that and forwarded that to my white knight of an lawyer.......
People remember this.........
If you have kids and a " Clipboard" shows up at your house....
Do not let them in.......
Be polite but firm.
You dont have to answer the door
You dont have to return theyre calls
You owe them nothing, unless the courts say so
The badge means little
They are usually a little lacking in education but they make up for it with the classes they took in manipulation and physcology.
They truely want to get involved..in your business..do not volunteer any info you do not want recorded or misinturpreted.
Make sure your kids are fed, loved dressed, educated, not hurt, not abused and are Happy!!!!!
if they have special needs like therepy ect..take care of it on your own and remember that this is the government "trying"to "help"you.......
They are difficult to bring up to task if they dont play fair so be warned....
if none of this bothers you then ignore this but if you have kids....your first priority is to them ......use common sense and prepare for their burning experiances. This doesnt mean you have to have a vanilla life.

Being a former teacher myself with a Master's Degree, I am really stressing, former, The school and justice system is a catch 22. What in the hell was that teacher thinking about? The law clearly states that there has to be physical evidence of neglect and abuse. If that is not obvious , your child's teacher has stepped way out of the lines. The SS and courts where I live would laugh and would not back the teacher and would toss it out of the court system if the teacher only has unsubstantial evidence and is only going on the fact that your child's parents belong to BM. Pray tell, what is so wrong or evil about that? I wish you all the luck with your case. I am interested to see where this will go because it could be a landmark case for future lawsuits. I have done extensive studying in public law cases in education and this suit seems to have all the key elements for an interesting landmark case.
Good luck
Good luck

That's not what the law states, there does not have to be any physical evidence, just "reasonable suspicion". Read for yourself here:
California Penal Code section 11164
1) For the purposes of this article, "reasonable suspicion" means
that it is objectively reasonable for a person to entertain a
suspicion, based upon facts that could cause a reasonable person in a
like position, drawing, when appropriate, on his or her training and
experience, to suspect child abuse or neglect. For the purpose of
this article, the pregnancy of a minor does not, in and of itself,
constitute a basis for a reasonable suspicion of sexual abuse

It may be a Creative Arts School of boiling pagans in oil!
We are at a border crossing of cultural acceptance in our world, but some people, mainly those that have not the ability to the beauty or other cultures. Social workers have to balance their individual beliefs with the law, but if they see you as a threat then all they have to do is look into your personal lives to pick out something that may upset them and it can be a whirl wind of trouble and expenses.
Seek out the an attorney that has specialized in defending clients in cases of your type. To counter act this person's accusations, get a good investigator to do a little prying into her life. You will be amazed of what her life is all about and get her fired.
In my case of this social worker that was spreading lies about me. I first reported to the police to create a paper trail. She never report her accusation to the police as far as I know. Then I reported the incident to her superiors that she didn't reported to the authorites that some one her position didn't report this fowl act and was unfit to judge social cases. Then I spoke to several attorneys about her to use her actions that she is unfit to judge anyone. I also told her superiors that she was a heavy drug user which she is.
She'll think about doing this to anyone before she hurts someone else.
