Is Stephan from Vancouver okay? Bike accident on Thursday

Post by mojourney » Mon Sep 03, 2007 1:01 pm

I'm posting in the hope of finding out info about an accident on Thursday night. My wife and I were out by the oil derrick when a man hit the pipeline on his bike at full speed and was knocked out pretty badly. We helped him out and stayed with him until the EMT's arrived, and they took him away in the ambulance. After that we were unable to get any info as to whether or not he was okay. He said his name was Stephan, was from Vancouver, and camping at 8:30 and Landfill with Tristan and Sylvia. That's all the info we've got, just wanted to see if he's alright. If you know him, are him, or have any info then we'd really appreciate it. We were both quite worried about him. Thanks,

Nick & Shilpa

That's scary.
Do you know if it was Washington or British Columbia Vancouver?

Here in BC I ran into my friend from high school on the street and he said he was going to the Burn for the first time ... this was about a month ago. And his name is Stephan. Shit, I really hope you can find out what happened. I hadn't seen him in 5 years and didn't get any contact info so unless he stops by where I work (thats where I saw him) I couldnt answer your question.

Well, you wont get an answer from ESD--the playa volenteer medics. So unless he or one of his friends is on this board, you probably won[t find out.

Just a correction...ESD/REMSA is not volunteer. They are paid quite handsomely to be there.

REMSA is paid. ESD is volenteer. I volenteered there myself for 2 years.

Well, it was my friend, and he's ok. Finally answered my email. But he was airlifted out of BRC to Reno so it was semi-serious.

Hi there, this is stephan from vancouver! And Keith, i'm assuming you're K mom! Nick and Shilpa, THANK YOU SO MUCH! For your help and everything! I have no recollection from the incident at all. And when i got back from the hospital, i was on a mission to find the people who helped me, and really wanted to let them know how much i appreciated their help! This is so fantastic that through six degrees of separation i acctually found you guys!!!
After they took me to the medic tent, they contacted my camp, and they all came down to check up on me. They ended up airlifting me to reno hospital, concerned about head trauma and neck injuries. took a cat scan of my head, xrayed my ankels, which were scratched up too, and basically washed half the playa out of my eye! They released me about four hours later, and two of my amazing campmates, DROVE to Reno and picked me up and brought me back to the playa by noon!

I have full vision, thankfully, and still have a blood shot eye, but all in all i was so fucking lucky, and truly thank you for being such amazing and helpfull people.

I live in Whistler BC now, and if you guys are skiers, or boarders, and are looking for a vacation, you are more than welcome to stay at my place here! I live with a fellow burner!

Where are you guys from?
my email is [email protected]

take care

good to hear from you

Stephan,
Good to hear from you and we're so happy that you're okay. We witnessed your accident and were the first ones to get to you out there and ended up sitting with you for a while until the EMTs came out. It was a pretty spectacular hit that you took and we're both quite amazed that you weren't more seriously injured. You definitely had an angel on your shoulder that evening. We tried finding out if you were okay or not the next morning but the people at the medical tent wouldn't give us any information because of the whole patient privacy thing.

Anways, we live in San Ramon, CA - just outside of Oakland in the East Bay. We both snowboard (poorly) and would love a trip up your way, thanks for the hospitable offer. Maybe we'll be dropping you a line this winter :)

Take care of yourself and that eye of yours. We're both thankful that you made it through okay and were even able to still enjoy the burn (those are some great camp-mates you have there). Our best wishes to you,

Nick & Shilpa

Well again guys, you were the angels on my shoulder! Too bad you live so far away, but hey, feel free to drop me a line, and come up! Again, thanks, and we'll hopefully cross paths again on more accomodating terms!

Much love,
stephan

Sorry about the accident, Stephan! Glad you survived!

At least one other person had a serious crash into that pipe and had to be taken away by ambulance. It was a woman on Saturday, so definitely not the same incident. There's a thread about it under Art and Performance, but most people want to blame only the cyclists. I think the artist has some responsibility too, but that's just my opinion. I also had a crash into some unlit debris, but no harm done. I'm going to be more cautious next year!

Hey Stephan,
I'm sure glad to hear that you're ok after your crash out at Crude Awakening. I'm the Ranger who arrived on the scene and radioed ESD to come out and get you. After they took you away in the ambulance I drove to your camp and notified your campmates about you. They met up with you at REMSA before you flew out to Reno.

On Saturday night when Crude Awakening burned I took a position on the perimeter near where you went down. I was thinking about you that night watching that huge spectacle. Glad you're ok.
