I want to apologize to our neighbors
I want to apologize to our neighbors
Hello all, This is Batmoose.
This was my wife and I's 1st burn, and we ended up camping with some kids who were very inconsiderate.
I would like to personally apologize to anyone camping in or around 4:20 and J street. It was not my sound system, and they were not my friends.
My wife and I actually ended up leaving to go home on wed. night/thurs morning because we couldn't handle the crushing loud music. It ruined our experience and I bet it got to some others as well.
It turns out that the persons responsible for the noise were not even supposed to be camping with us and they also turned out to be thieves as well. I was told that some camp members were sent home but we had already left.
I would ask any of you who were dealing with that situation to please consider that not all the camp members at camp Lost Reality were jerks, and again I apologize on behalf of myself, my wife and our two hosts who were doing what they could to contain the situation.
I would like to recognize those of you who asked very nicely and politely for the music to be turned down and were ignored or refused.
I am very sorry about that, and know that the karmic wheel did indeed run over the offenders. I know that isn't much consolation to no sleep, but it's all I can offer you at this time.
I would very much like to make it up to all of you somehow, and if any of you are returning in 08, I will make it right. Look for Batmoose in the evenings, or I will find you. Somehow.

Batmoose, next time consider shifting camp. Try walk in. Don't let those bozos ruin your experience. I hope you found something good to do the rest of the week.

At the time, @ 2:30 in the AM, I did not feel like breaking camp and setting up again somewhere else.
I admit that my thought processes were assulted by both the music and what we have come to call "playa head", but I think I made the right choice at the time. I would have liked to stay the full week, but at the time I just did not have negotiating a new spot in me.
Hindsight is of course 20/20. It was a scary-ass drive back home.
I just really wanted to express my concern to the nice people who camped around us, and to say on behalf of Camp Lost Reality, I am so, so sorry we fucked up your experience.
I will endevor to make up for my camp's bad taste of music next year. Fact.

Batmoose, consider taking an ice pick.
They work real nice on speakers that get too much exercise in the early morning hours.
Also sheet rock nails modified into blow darts can be launched many yards away with a correctly made blow gun using 1/2" electrical conduit.
We had no obnoxiously loud camps near 3:30 and Coral Reef this year.

So sorry you ended up leaving, Batmoose. At least you missed two terrifying dust storms.
There are some designated quiet(er) areas. I don't know where they are or how to find out about them, but if you're sensitive to noise then you might try to do some research into them for next time. Assuming there is a next time -- I hope you come back.

We actually found one of the quiet areas while walking around, Hushville I believe it was.
But it's not about the normal amount of radio/live music I expect at these kinds of events.
If you had walked anywhere near our camp, you would understand.
Our tent was about 50 feet behind the Dome, which was out on the street, and the bass was so crushing back there that with earplugs AND my fingers against my ears, it was eating my soul.
And I'm a bass player.
It was way, way to excessive, and I did not feel like sacrificing what's left of my hearing to a couple of assholes.
But do not concern yourself, I will return, if only to do it right next time and bless walkersby with good and varied tunes. I can't please everyone, but we will play more then bad house music, be sure. :D

I know!
We had the perfect address, I loved telling the folks I met and puffed with how to find us, and my neighbor to the left of us was certainly down for the cause! I was so sorry we had to be the bad camp.
Dusty, if you are out there, thanks again for that delicious oil and rice krispy treats.

Wow man I don't think I've ever heard an apology for being "that camp". That takes alot of guts.
Why didn't you join forces and expell those assholes? How could you all let some jack-off thieves take over your camp? We've had "hangers on-ers" crash and mooch our camp that's for sure. But never a full on take over.

Hey Batmoose, you're the kind of burner I hope to meet out on the playa next year. Most people can't take responsibilty to apologize for themselves, let alone for others they were close enough to smack upside the head and wanted to.
It's said that Burning Man is about 'radical self expression', but that should not be at the expense of others. Burners are pretty cool usually, but consider rounding up a lynch mob if you find yourself in that situation, or they come back next year. Not only will it be fun, but it will be a public service, and community building event too! Drive them out of Black Rock City with pitch forks and torches!!!

I can relate to his sad situation. In our similar situation, we moved.cornelius wrote: . . . Why didn't you join forces and expell those assholes? The thing is, if you are out there with your spouse, do you really want to invest any mental or emotional energy energy into a battle with rude and incompassionate individuals or groups? I'm sorry that BORG has yet to clearly address and handle this. There needs to be a period of time, from 3am till noon for example, where loud sound systems are not tolerated at all unless thye are positioned along the line from 10 through Esplanade through 2. Even anarchists need sleep!

I hear ya Player...we've even gone so far as to abandon a great camp name and "give" it to the candy ravers that lived in the fringes of our camp. We joined forces with those who were opposed because the losers outnumbered us (in a camp of 40 people, I knew 10). They took our name and tried to have a "theme" camp the following year, but without the 10 people who did all the work and brought all the stuff, it kinda collapsed on itself. Standing in the dusty aftermath they stood around scratching their heads, wondering why this year wasn't as great as last year.

Thanks to all for the responses.
I am still hoping to pick up a few of those who were actually around us. If any of you know anyone who was around the 4:30 & J area, please direct them to this thread so that I can try to make it right.
I am happy to see that you folks out there can take my post as it was intended. I really do feel pretty bad about it and I couldn't think of any other way to get the message out there then in here.
I welcome any and all new people to meet and greet! Skygod, Viking, Cornelius, thanks!! I am in reno and if ever you folks need a pre-burn staging area, you are welcome.
Today is a day where I need some positive feedback. I appriciate it, all of you.
Here is a link to a blog site that was set up for my Brother who passed away this year on my birthday. He is the reason I went this year, and if you have the time I would love to share a little of him with you all.
I know someone who was a few camps down from there. I've forwarded this thread to her, but I don't think she is a forum member and she isn't likely to post here. Let me know if you want me to relay anything else to her.
Please tell her that My wife and I are very sorry that she had to listen to "our" camp day and night, and also tell her that if there is anything I can do to move that karmic wheel back around a bit I would love the chance.
Perhaps she may want to spend a weekend in Reno? I could make that happen. I also give killer massages [wife supervised] and I play bass pretty well, I could come and seranade her with funk and jazz perhaps......
I do not know how I can make this up to those around our camp, but I will sure as hell try.
And thanks Hoolie for being willing to be the conduit thru which this will pass. I appriciate it muchly.

Hi Batmoose --
I was part of ClanDestiny, 4:20 between I and J (across the street from your "friend"'s speakers). We worked with the Rangers, who ended up shutting him down (I'm not sure how -- other members of my camp where the main liaisons for solving the problem) -- but sho'nuff he had 'WAY more power than is allowed in that part of the city... AND crappy taste in music between 2 and 5 a.m.
No need for you to "make good" for any of us, 'though. We had an entirely magical week in SPITE of starting the week with the sleep/noise problem! Thanks for offering!

Heya, Batmoose! I wasn't camping in your area, but I've bumbled on this thread and I'm so sorry to hear about you and your wife being forced out of your camp and your Burn.We actually found one of the quiet areas while walking around, Hushville I believe it was.
Hopefully, you guys will indeed come back next year and have a great Burn to purge the bad taste and experience of this one.
Hushville is a great group of burners that embrace a quieter Burn philosophy, I belong to their discussion group - although I didn't camp with them this year (my Burn-mate wanted to camp with some of his friends elsewhere).
Here's the Hushville website for more info on their camp: http://www.hushville.com/home/

I am still sorry that you guys had to put up with it though. I was BEHIND the speakers most of the time and it was bad enough to chase us out.
I can imagine what it must have been like for you in front of them.
And yes, really crappy taste in music, I agree.
Well, at least know that this thread is for you and yours and that there are some from Camp Lost Reality that care about good community spirit.
Thank you guys for the info on hushville. That may be the way to go next time.

One last bump to try to reach those that were affected.
Thanks to all for letting this nOOb voice my thoughts amongst you creative and talented folks.
My wife and I are looking forward to doing time on the Moop Crew, giving out the best grapes ever, and getting mellow with all our new friends next year.
I will endeavor to drop in to the eplaya when I can to read all your fantastic stories and your wonderful gripes.

I was lucky my little space was quiet. Never any unnecessary music, and when there was music, it was quiet and chill and enjoyable.
It was so peaceful that in the mornings I'm embarassed to say that I was irritated by the occasional 'chirp' from people unlocking their cars with their keyfobs. How RUDE! C'mon, people, use the internet and figure out how to quiet your cars.
