Corporate Sponsorship is a Good Thing at the Playa

Corporate Sponsorship is a Good Thing at the Playa
I think we need some corporate sponsorship. More money for the artists, more grants. Who cares if big corporations come into the playa, it is good for us. Besides, they are already there anyway. Why not get more money from them. Just think, Trojan Condom booth. Free condoms. A glowstick company, free samples. A water company. Companies that sell sexual toys.
More money for the artists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still treasure the idea of being able to spend a week without advertising. Since like it or not, I live in the belly of the beast for the other 51.

Only if they let me "test drive" the toys before I decide not to buy them.mensen wrote:Companies that sell sexual toys.
The only thing I will buy out there is ice and on rare occasions coffee, when I am too lazy to clean my dusty, crusty french press.
I am a bit tied up at the moment...but if you leave your name and number.....
Mensen, are you new here? (By "here", I mean Eplaya & BRC)
You really want people to give you more stuff?
I see a lot of sponsorship going on already. I am new to the forum and blogging but not new to BM. 8 years running in attendance. I put a lot of money into my camps. I have the money to use for these situations. I make a lot of people happy. I am complete anticorporate. But the reality is that they are there anyway and we need more money to be donated to the artists. Less drugs, more art. Less white trash partying (I am WT with cash) and more massive scale art projects. Being a US citizen, we are fooling ourselves if we think we can "get away" from the Man. I say use corporate money to benefit us. Money makes the whole go around.

As an artist, I'm very much against that idea.
Corporate sponsorship is everywhere. Our minds have become bathed in images of the Corporate Machine since birth. You cannot even decide to become a hermit out in the middle of a barren forest without seeing an ad... there will be a plane flying by with the PEPSI logo when you're out in the river looking for a fish, or being chased by a bear!!
It seems to me that the beauty of BM is not relying on your wallet to carry you through to the next breath. I believe the glory of BM is radical self-reliance.
It's healthy to let your mind be free for a week from a lifetime of damage by the subjection of multi-million dollar companies and their cash crop ideals.
I believe if you allow corporations into the event, you will be coughing with a bad cold right into the public drinking well.

In a word, No! The idea of that opens the door for center camp cafe to be run by Starbucks, and Evian gifting or selling bottles of water in golf carts. That's not Burning Man, except maybe in my nightmares.
I own a business, and left all my business cards at home. If I advertised at Burning Man I'd probably get some clients. If Burning Man becomes about marketing and promotion then the spirit is far gone.

OK, good to have some background...
I think it would be great if more artists got money from the Borg, but I don't see corporate sponsorship as the way to do it. With sponsorship comes the right of the sponsor to demand changes that could be very bad for the event. If pepsico give an assload of money to the event or a specific artist, they could then say "We don't want anything contriversial/obscene/offensive produced with our money." Take a look at all the anti-logos from the Seemen/Helco burn in 96.

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

please stop
I thought maybe you were kidding. there are a lot of kidders and pranksters on eplaya, as there were on the real playa this year. but after your rebuttal, I realized, unless you are really pulling our leg, that you are serious.
Maybe there was some truth to my bad trip on sunday night when I realized, "why did we have to go to such lengths out here to be the most basic thing humans were made to do: be creative?" what is the big deal?
and the next thought: " why do we have to come out here and shit all over this sacred place just to be creative/find ourselves or god/see great art?"
The reason I've come to see now is that in truth, there ain't no where in the world like BRC, if not just for the very fact that most people give mostly of themselves, or that we can't have the walmart on the corner to bail us out of losing the tent to the dust storm, or that there are no cell phones, or garbage disposals...oh wait, that's right...we can use the toilets for our trash. (what a friggin' disgrace. I was embarrassed to be a citizen this year, I have to say...did anyone read the survival guide, or hell, ask yourselves if this was the right thing to do as you dumped your beer can into the toilet???)
now that I see you are serious about corporate sponsorship, I wonder if I just might be stepping one foot over onto the dark side where I begin to be way too critical of brc, wondering if I'll go again. and I was one who never thought I would think this way. But with the f***ing hokey-ass theme for next year and your bulls**t idea, 08 might just be the year to actually show up for my first week of classes, rather than miss them with a religious fervor that no administrator could deny.
would you please take your corporate sponsorship and shove it way the hell up your a** so it comes out the hole in your head where your brain used to be? before this great city goes to hell?
don't be a soulless sack of poo...brc certainly don't need anymore of that going on...repent your foolish ways, lest you wind up with the playa spirits on your bad side. it's been known to happen, just ask anyone whose been there...
have you?

no corporate sponsorship needed for organic art...
