Well, he wrote: "Most of you are newbies who have been drawn in by the semi-religious nature of the event, or maybe just the easy drugs and easier sex. You have nothing to offer the event other than your fucking money and obedience. You spend the rest of your lives in mortal fear of everything that insurance companies tell you to fear, and pretend that you're free and clear because you spend four days at a desert bacchanal where spinelessness is not only encouraged but genetically replicated for implementation in successive generations. In short, you are the swine of which Thompson spoke."spectabillis wrote:because someone committed a crime, they are automatically a liar in whatever they say?
So, yeah, fuck Addis. I'm not going to give him any benefit of the doubt.
Nope, because I simply don't believe it. He said it in the same message in which he called most of us spineless spine who have nothing to offer the event other than money and obedience, which is also disrespectful and untrue.spectabillis wrote:the other concern is seeing that he planned this with enough foresight not to put others intentionally in danger, but people dont really want to hear that
Once again, fuck Addis. If he wants my sympathy or respect he's gonna have to earn it. He, in terms of both torching the man and his comments afterward, lost it.
I don't think he deserves hard time because nobody lost life, but, he continues to fuck with us. L-pills? Are we supposed to believe the "BRI" took suicide pills too? If they exist, they should come forward and defend his statement that they kept other people out of danger. If they committed suicide, who were they? If SOME of it is bullshit, then why would I believe any of it?
As long as he chooses to fuck with people, he deserves whatever he gets for it and I'm certainly not obliged to defend him. It's totally up to him at this point.

seeing how part of what he says unfortunately applies to some people, if you take something general like that personally then i guess you must be pretty unhappy and tired of justifying yourself to idiots. not sure i would do that, but oh well.ZaphodBurner wrote:Nope, because I simply don't believe it. JAIL?!?!?! What have you people become? chill the fuck out. you already banned him.. kicked him out.. he spent anight in jail.. actually why don't you just set up a prison system at BM next year, and create a police force with judges and capital punishment.. maybe they could privatize the jail system and hire you to run it BurningFlyer? we need someone tough who could take care of these vandals. Maybe Google Maps can map it out the prison and enjoy front page branding on the Burning Man homepage again during the '08 Burn..
Enjoy your American Dream next year!

Hell, I bet there's lots of people who would burn your art and spend the night in jail for news coverage and anti-hero celebrity status.
...which is why maybe he should have been driven miles into the open playa and left with a bottle of water and a compass. Plenty of danger and radical self-reliance, Paul. All you have to do is avoid BRC, but, you didn't want to be part of that anyway.

hey. i would've accepted that as a valid response to his action.. fuck.. take away the compass! it would have been better than all this legal bull that BM is now involved in.. and any police involvment..

He'd have likely as not died from exposure unless somebody found him and gave him a lift. So basically his choice would be to deal with potential fines, community service or jailtime, or face the high possibility heat stroke and death in the open desert.georgio5 wrote:hey. i would've accepted that as a valid response to his action.. fuck.. take away the compass! it would have been better than all this legal bull that BM is now involved in.. and any police involvment..zaphodburner wrote:

Wow. I was being sarcastic.

A cool way to protest BM would be to build something bigger and better than the man, and let the general public come out and burn it.

Many of the displays of green technology were on loan from educational outreach groups to schools and community groups and the damage to them by the water used to extinguish the unplanned burn was extensive.
Due to the closing of the pavilion, few were able to actually see or interact with the displays.

Hmm, repeated collective symbols that are done intentionally are not art? I don't buy it. Using that definition the Temple probably isn't art, nor is Thunderdome, or any one of the many repeat visitors to the playa. Everything out there is a result of intention and much of it is repeated each year. Using your definition a theatre company's annual Christmas Carol production isn't art and I know a mess of actors, directors, lighting designers, set designers, costumers, and other assorted theatre folk who'd beg do differ. With good reason.spectabillis wrote:....
the man has become a collective symbol, much of that has been sanctioned and intentional with repeated construction over all the years. someones art is not.
The Man, and his surrounding (corporate) pavilion were art. They might not be your favorite art, they may or may not be good art, but they were art. Frankly I watched the first man burn, have read what's his face's statement, and still don't know what his point was in burning it early. In as much as the object of art is to express a meaning/feeling/impart a reaction the corporate pavilion was clearly, "better," art than the unplanned burn, as far as I see things....;)
Ron
both sides have a point
This is one of those problems that can be argued both ways. This simple fact should be enough for people to reconsider their positions deeply. The solution is a lot of things. Just not simple and easy.
1) If you respect the decision to sue Addis and bring police and the US's overcrowded prisons into the equation, then you should be happy that reason triumphs over the futile idealism of the uncompromising negative responses here. Addis will be sued and hopefully punished and we can all finally sleep better because justice has been served and the US is a just country. A country wherein even in extreme settings like burning man, people are free from the unreasonable risk of a few unreasonable people.
2) You listen to the music of all this and you find a betrayal of the very values that made Burning Man appealing to you in the first place. After all, this feels like and is a court-case now... and I came to dance!
It is obvious, which way I lean. From my perspective at least, it's best to try envision what Burning Man justice would mean and look like on a pragmatic level and to look long and hard at the forms of justice imposed upon the outside world. These forms seem to promote revenge, greed, and manipulative con games which then pose as justice. This splits families and destroys relationships. Do you really want to feed this form of justice into the playa?
The dialog about alternative visions of justice is already here as many have offered different ways of how to deal with Addis. I am not an expert in justice and the relevant philosophy. So it would be cool if these experts came forward at this moment and make the best suggestions available to us.
In the age of the web 2.0 it should be a simple matter to give every burner a login/account in a voting forum and empower them to decide on sticky issues concerning their beloved city.

guess i will have to hold your hand ron and walk you through this.
where in my post did i say that it wasnt art? that was your mistake, i didnt say that. and there is art that makes repeated appearances, but you made another mistake in assuming thats what i am referring to. i was referring to the one or two time art creations that make up the vast majority of art.
feel better ron? thaaaats it, all is well, i am sure you will have plenty of other opportunities to wax philosophical.

Irresponsible brat acting out for attention...
Kinetic V sayed:
"perhaps the ORG should pay the guy for his service. In one shot he got the event more press coverage, worldwide coverage in fact, than anything else the ORG has concocted to date for the media. You can't put a pricetag on publicity like that. Heck...this might have been the thing that generates enough awareness to move the event past the 50K pop wall and kicks it to the next level."
So, are you being sarcastic here, or no?
It's always hard to tell with the written word.
If not, then i have to laugh at this. More publicity is the last freakin' thing Bm needs, thanks.
Paul Addis = candyass.
If he wants this much attention, he could be BUILDING something huge and cool instead.

Was the Green Pavillion the beginning of a slippery slope, one that started with CURRENT TV and continued through the Business 2.0 article?
Was the "Green" theme a way for Larry Harvey to politicalize a festival where many sought refuge from politics?
Had the symbol of the Man itself become perverted; now the center of a trademark dispute between former and current BM creators?
Addis might have had a beef with any one or all of the above. They were all legitimate topics of discussion, bandied about certainly in this and other forums. Hell, he might've even had some valid opinions somewhere between those Insane Clown Posse (Hello, 1999? I have something of yours...) ears.
But all that went away the moment his keds left the playa and he shimmied up the Man's guy wires with a propane torch.
Sometimes a person can do something SO INCREDIBLY STUPID that smart people (read IQ 85+) can't comprehend it for what it is.
It HAS to be a political statement, right? Because nobody would SET FIRE to a pavillion, y'know, a pavillion WHERE PEOPLE GATHER without some valid reason, right?
So if it's a political statement, it's got to have a point, right? Because nobody would SET FIRE to a PAVILLION armed with some weak ass gonzo wannabe diatribe, right? The diatribe that calls over half the participants newbies (wrong) who are serving a quasi-religious calling (wrong) and are there merely to be obedient (uh, huh?)
Nobody could be THAT stupid, right? There's got to be some, as-yet-to-be-revealed BRILLANCE to this act, right? Some deeper, cacophonic, socio-political economical MEANING to this act, right?
Because nobody just commits wanton FEDERAL ARSON without a rock solid idiological mooring, right?
I'm from Colorado, so maybe I'm missing the subtlety. How about this:
When Paul Addis comes up for his sentencing hearing (law question: if it's a Federal Crime, what are the rules of extradition? Can they try him at a Federal Court House in SF?) my guess is the Judge'll ask him if he'd like to make a statement. If he sticks to his guns and repeats his "BM is the opiate of the masses" bullshit, then, yes, I'll give the "It's a Political Message" folks their due: He's a piece of shit arson zealot.
But if cries and apologizes and begs for the Court's mercy, then I hope we can all agree he's just a piece of shit arsonist.

Irony. You're soaking in it.
Re: Help Prosecute Paul Addis
Yeah, Capt. Goddammit, I got the same response from someone else for saying the same thing I said here. I didn't burn it, nor would I ever. I also would never seriously encourage someone to do an act of arson (I said it here on eplaya like 2 months ago, but as a joke because I was pissed about the pavillion trade show). I think it was dangerous for him and he could've hurt someone else doing it.Captain Goddammit wrote:Hey asshole... just because you don't like something doesn't give you the right to burn it.madmatt wrote:Thanks for the info Burning Flyer!!! But the unchangeable fact is HE DID IT. And guess what? I'm GLAD he did it. It made me feel good inside. So what? You're saying you want someone to burn down my camp down so you can cheer, to punish me for feeling glad he did it? How I feel about it evokes that much "give a shit" in you? How pathetic.
That doesn't make sense. What happened to having a right to your opinion fool? What are you, the thought police? You telling me I can't feel emotions or think thoughts?
By the way, no one has a right to burn down my camp, but everyone has the right to cheer, laugh, cry, or feel whatever if it happens. Are you a simpleton that you can't see the difference between feelings and actions?

Re: both sides have a point
For the record, Addis is not being sued, he is being charged criminally. Big difference.punface wrote:If you respect the decision to sue Addis...

I don't care what the borg says: feather-wearers will NOT be served in Rosie's Bar.
When I ask how many burns, I mean at BRC.

burningflyer scares me
burningflyer scares me. Let me know where burningflyer is camping next year so I can be sure not to sneeze in their direction. I'm sure there is some sneezing law they will find online.

Hey Master Mis-Quote...
I didn't say I WANTED anyone to burn your camp to punish you for having an opinion. I DID say I'd watch and cheer if someone did. EXACTLY like you are doing about Paul Addis-hole. To use your own words, what happened to my right to have an opinion and/or cheer?
I feel EXACTLY the same as you, and am doing EXACTLY the same as you. The only difference is what each of us thinks would be fun to watch burn.
The fact is, Paul Addis-hole burned someone else's art (and property). That isn't any cooler than if someone burned your camp. Funny how you get defensive when I talk about YOUR stuff burning!
