Here's an interesting delima.....

Post by CapSmashy » Mon Sep 10, 2007 9:04 am

I have some friends that are/were being scammed hardcore by a group of girls posing as members of a Naval EOD/Crypto (their mission evolved over time) unit in Iraq. I am not sure what kind of funds were sent or what kind of stuff was sent, but I know there was some of that going on to "support the girls".

I was the initial contact for the scam group via Myspace and they utilized my friend's list to set more hooks. Based on my previous military experience and friends and contacts that are currently serving (including 2 guys that are Navy EOD (explosive ordinance disposal)) I knew they were full of absolute bullshit and called them on it immediately.

Anyway, the scam operation has been running for at least a year and has culminated in the following recent activity. The girls were supposed to be coming home last week after their tour had been extended 6 months by the Navy. They were all sent out on "one last mission" the day before they were to leave and yep, you guessed it, they were hit by surprise artillery fire and while not yet fully "confirmed" by the mystery source of information, I will be willing to bet there will be no survivors.

Now, back when all of this started, I made serious attempts to tell them this was all bullshit. They insisted it was all legit, they had talked to them on the phone, etc... even though I had IP traces that showed all of their email and Myspace activity was originating from a Texas ISP when they were supposed to be in Washington DC for school and later in Iraq. I pretty much washed my hands of all of it at that point and stopped talking about it.

Now, these new developments have surfaced and as a result, I have several friends that are all torn up and in mourning for this group of girls that were supposedly killed in action on the day before they were to be coming home.

One part of me really, really wants to unload on them and call them out on how fucking gullible and stupid they are being. Here you have this group of child hood friends from a small town in North Texas, all girls, that all joined the Navy at the same time and all managed to get accepted, at the same time mind you, into the Naval Crypto school in DC and then... and then all go to EOD school together, and then AND FUCKING THEN! all get stationed together as a special unit in Iraq because they were all childhood friends and so remarkable that this special unit of all ENLISTEDgirls were under the direct command of an Admiral that just happened to be the father of one of the girls. Oh yeah, their Chief from tech school was there too.

And to cap it all off... here you have this group of 5 childhood friends from North Texas, who have all excelled in their Naval training, all ambushed last week, all presumed dead (since the latest update has the Navy utilizing jewelry and tattoos to make identifications) and there has not been a peep of any of it on the local news.

I have been fighting the urge to unload on them for the sole reason of the sad fact they still have not figured all of this out and are truly grieving over the supposed loss.

And my wife won't let me.

I take no real solace in the fact that I get to say "nyah nayh told ya so" here in the next few weeks when there are no funerals and their mystery source stop communicating with them, but I recognize that it will be extremely hard not to debase my maturity down to this level after watching how twisted up they have become in this web.

GAH! I guess there is no real question here... more of vent session in the one place I know they will not be reading online.

Terrific soap opera plot.

?

What the hell? The folks I knew that went EOD/Seal had to hit boot camp, then BUDS, and then the EOD/Seal training.

I have no experience with crypto, but that's intel if I'm not mistaken. I don't think you can get to a crypto school before you hit your EOD training. Unless you are transferring from another rate to EOD, in which case you would have to hit BUDS anyway.

Yah, to put in mildly- I call bullshit. Its been years since I did my stint in the Navy, but I doubt its changed that much.

I was in crypto. No way would I have been trained as EOD. Or vice versa.

Mylarry was slated for ET/crypto, during bootcamp they ran him through the SEALS preselection tests. They wanted him bad, but once they found out he had a contract for advanced electronics, the SEALS were a no go. Probably a good thing, he'd have made a psycho SEAL.

It just don't work that way.

The people that were sucked into this have zero personal or even family military background. I suppose that part would be obvious.

I started calling bullshit on about the 4th email I got from them in the initial baiting period. Then I had everything confirmed by the IP traces. I am really tempted to make a call to a local news station and pass along the phone numbers of my friends and the story.

The politburo member from Apokiliptika also votes... aye.

Amazing what a scam artist will pull. Also amazing just how naive the public has become. It sounds like part of the current "If someone says it it mus be true" syndrome. Arrghhh!

Not only is there no way someone who does crypto can also do EOD, Women are (or were, unless something's changed radically since I've been in) ineligible for EOD. And a group of *5* friends from the same town being stationed together? Best let the bull out, the stall's gettin' mighty full...

Anyway, that's 3 strikes right there.

Women may now be blown up just like the men. I don't know how new that is, but we lost a female guardsman this year as she and the guys were trying to defuse a IED.

I don't know about Texas, but here, we can turn that kind of info over to the State Atty Gen office. They will investigate and prosecute, especially if there is money involved.......

As I was not directly impacted by the actions, I would not be able to file any kind of complaint.

And it will take some kind of slap in the face wake up call for those that have been affected to do anything.

CapSmashy,

http://www.ncis.navy.mil/

This is a link to Naval Police. Do not think of it as filing any kind of complaint. Think of it as giving them a heads up about a potential problem for THEM!

Just my 2 cents.

I dont not sqwat about the services, guess I was knocked up and married to early in life to consider a life in...but this questions probly as dumb as all things asked....

What are the chances even 2 friends let alone 5 friends would go through all the same departments, training and then stationed in same area?
Im not a military expert but seems to me that that would NEVER happen!

The military did (and probably still does) have a buddy system. It was designed for 2 people from the same hometown to go through at least basic training together. After that, its open season on assignments, etc. The odds of the same group of women going from start to finish in the same basic training group and then moving on to 2 of the highest demand qualification fields of the service is slim to none.

The chances of them all being assigned to a specially created unit under the direct command of an admiral (who happens to be the father of one of the women) with no intermediary command is the stuff of total fantasy.

According to blog updates, the "official" word has been released by the Navy and they are confirmed dead.

And yet there is zero info about them in the news. Still.

And I am still waiting for contact from the news station. I hope they get back to me.
