Reno Drive-Thru Recycling Program question

Post by jackie_o » Mon Jul 30, 2007 9:25 pm

The latest JRS talked about the "Reno Drive-Thru Recycling Program" which I think is an awesome idea and I want to participate.

However, does anyone know if/how the recyclables need to be sorted? A list of what can be recycled was given but I saw no mention of if they need to be sorted or can just be thrown in all together. I could not find anything on the eplaya either. If sorting is required, I want to do it on the playa rather than at the locations.

Any info will be greatly appreciated! Please post here. Thanks!

Jackie, thanks for pointing out a missing piece of the descriptions we've released so far -- indeed, the information does neglect to mention that recyclables will need to be sorted, since each type of recyclable will be going into a different dumpster. Nice catch!

Friends, if this info is news to you, here's the link: http://www.burningman.com/environment/blog/?p=82

More info and a new page about recycling in camp are coming up this week in the Environment section, too.

In a nutshell, the best tool is just planning ahead: bring signage and bins for cans, bottles, trash, etc., so you will be sorting from the minute you unpack the car.

Thanks actiongrl! I'll watch for the next post with further details. In the meantime I am planning to be a sorting/recycling manic during our entire BM adventure.

PS - I'm spoiled at home as we have one big wheeled cart we throw ALL recyclables in (paper, plastic, glass, metal, etc) and just wheel to the curb!

We have the same thing; I'm spoiled to it too so I feel ya.

One thing I do think is cool that this program is taking more kinds of plastic than they do in San Francisco (they don't take #1 or #4 here in the city by the Bay's program....)

I notice that people chuck trash into our recycling at night when they can't read signage we've put up...here's a tip.

This cutout wood topper for a trash can makes the hole small enough that only a can or bottle will pass so that in the dark, nobody will mistake the recycling for the garbage. Marked with glow paint you could even designate bottle vs. can if you plan to have glass in your camp...

Thank You for the Reno Recycling Pgm!

Just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who made the Reno Drive-Thru Recycling Program a reality! My camp is split about 50-50 with people who care and want to recycle and others who don't. But I took the role of recycling czar and helped make it super easy for everyone to participate. I'm guessing we had about 80% participation which is better than last year which was essentially zero! In the end, one of the most anti-recyclers volunteered to stop at Albertson's to drop off our recyclables. To his surprise, it was super easy and now he's a convert, again because burners made it so easy in Reno.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

I dropped a playa bike -hozed it off when the car was at the car wash
(Someone repairs some of them for needy kids) and a pile of plastic
water jugs at the Keystone Albertson location.
