donating / sharing / disposing of scrap metal

Post by magi » Fri Sep 14, 2007 8:16 pm

Hey, I'm looking to get rid of some pieces of metal that have outlived their usefulness for our camp but since they're metal I'm thinking they might be of use to someone.

What I have is some rebar that's too badly bent to pound into the ground, and some EMT conduit that's drilled and bent for a structure I don't want any more. (Rebar: short pieces, 1 to 2 feet; conduit: long pieces, 8 to 10 feet.)

Anyone know of a place in the SF bay area that likes donations of bent and dirty but possibly useful rebar and conduit? Or, anyone here interested in it?

I don't want to just throw it away, but I don't have any need for it any more.

I don't know about SF, but in these parts there are a lot of places which take scrap metal (and a lot of people who go through garbage around businesses looking for scrap metal to sell to the above mentioned places.) Generally, places which purchase aluminum for recycling also purchase other metals. (Those are generally not worth as much as aluminum, which is expensive to process from raw ore, but are still worth something.)

Or, at least, that is my experience.

Good Luck!

Yeah, I'm with BAS. No ones going to want rebar that isn't usable. And the other pieces mentioned are very specific. You might only get a couple dollars, but you're at least doing the right thing with it.

Hey Fishy,

If you cannot find someone who can use the metal, call me at the shop or email me. I will be more than happy to pick it up for you. My shop is only about 10 minutes away as you know. I donate our unusable metal to the guys who drive the scrap trucks around our neighborhood. They come by and get scrap on a daily basis. They get a large load and take it to the dealers for cash. More than happy to help if need be.

I'm not looking for money; just to keep it out of the landfill (if someone can use it as is, so much the better, but if it gets scrapped and melted down, that's still a lot better than landfill).

Thanks for the advice!

Metal recycling is a huge international business and one that in my opinion is a good one. If you give your metal to a scrap collector or take it to a recycling yard it will get melted down and turned in to something usefull again. Scrap yards are interesting. It might be worth going there just to see what is going on. If the structure frame is still useable possibly a local burner could use it.
