It was used for real. and it did end something.Dustdevil wrote:Badger,
If it were to be used for real, it would mark the end of the world as we knew it.

Mutator yes!
I fail to see how anyone could say anything bad about the concert and the dancers at the derrick burn, THEY WERE FANTASTIC! I have seldom seen better entertainers in any venue. They were polished, fun and the music and choreography were excellent. They have gotten better over the years and are a real asset to the event.

i watched the man burn and 'crude awakening' burn from a 70-foot command platform around 2:00 and A. it was some sight to see the entire camp migrate from one place to the other. had no idea mutator played (who the hell are they anyway?)
i wouldn've smacked the dude who hassled me about moving my bike (unless of course he was org or ranger).
i quess this is why i stayed back this year and observed. seeing the playa light up when the rig went was inspiering.

OOOOOooo! A COMMAND platform! You are sooo kewl.space monk wrote:i watched the man burn and 'crude awakening' burn from a 70-foot command platform around 2:00 and A.
Seeing as you are new, you probably wouldnt understand and it would take way too long for me to explain them to you. Instead, just get your groove on and dont worry about it.space monk wrote: had no idea mutator played (who the hell are they anyway?)
So unless someone is pushing their authority on you, you respond with violence?space monk wrote: i wouldn've smacked the dude who hassled me about moving my bike (unless of course he was org or ranger).
Clearly, you do not get it yet. Keep going to the burn. Perhaps in time you will understand.

AHHHH still dreaming of the crude awaking burn..........soooooo very amazing......
DO you relize how much room bikes take up-when your in a group of people-and how dangerous it is to have them around in big groups...I know read the back on my ticket...
I have to ask.....WHY ARE YOU BRINGING YOUR F%$%(@!!! BIKE WITH YOU AND THEN GOING TO THE FRONT OF BURN AREA???????? IF YOUR GONNA BRING A BIKE OUT ON BURN NIGHT STAND BACK WHERE YOU BELONG...... then maybe people won't hassel ya (I miss the days when people would take bikes and throw 'em into the fire if they were to close)

If I were to wish ANYTHING I'd wish I were ME!!
That siren was AMAZING. So great to learn what it actually was. That was an incredible burn...
esp. with the siren. Loved it. So weird, the emotional response-a sense of foreboding- it created(in me). I didn't expect that. The geniuses at BM always take things to such unexpected, incredible heights.

Re: The fire was either 2 things
Cocaine was the contagious vibe of " this burn is about me-ism that translated into a unfamiliar feeling of " Fuck this Burn Im goin back to the default" by Wednesday afternoon. This was only staved off by the anticipation and the curiosity of what would transpire at Crude Awakening..that kept me yet even one more day by putting it off till Saturday.ecosutra wrote:1-

Either way, the Playa was full of fear turned into egos of festering ambivalence from not getting the solutions.
This was the first burn that I voluntarilary left three days early and before the Sunday Temple burn with a " So what? Who cares!?" additude. I felt I wasnt missing anything which was bizzare because usually Im clawing my eyes out if Im ten minutes late at the gate by Monday 12am..and getting the aw its almost overs!! by Friday at 9 am..
but I must say ..I had a blast with the whole " Fuck your Burn Hippy !!" additude.
its the common translation of " I LOVE you MAN!" in old school..
if you hear it, and are offended..than you havent burned long enough, or bright enough, with enough chemically enhanced fossilfied fuel or explosives to even polish our playa crusted boots HIPPY with your bio-degradable poly-insaturated creulty free made locally with hemp extracted lama sugar free organic boot polish.
Fuck your DAY!
got fire?
I thought the oil derek burn was the most amazing pyrotechnics display I have ever seen in my life. All who worked on that project get alot of respect from me. I will admit the anticipation of the burn did put a small damper on my burn night experience though. At the same time I would say it was worth it for sure.
What was the purpose of this tree anyway? I have seen a couple mentions here and there but no specifics. Was it to be burned? I saw somewhere that it was going to be planted out there. Is it even possible for a tree like that to live out there? I also heard that it was a big FU to the LNT folks and others said it was a prank against Larry for the theme. Kinda like FU I didn't dig the way you did your theme so heres a friggin tree to remove haha have fun picking the needles up mr. green commerce man, or something like that.

The tree thing should be no surprise, given the history of the art department and their grant recipients.
Would have been no problem if the org had a wood chipper & a yard waste recycling bin at Gate like I suggested.

In the original proposal the tree was to be made of metal and put into place after the tower burned. The figures then would have no longer been worshipping oil. Back to nature, if you will. As time ran out to build the metal tree, Das Mann made the decision to bring a live tree. It was to be placed there the morning after the tower fell. It was to remain for a couple of days and then planted in a permanent location.
Those who think they can and those who think they can't are both right.
the tree and its metaphors
I have a photo of the tree when they were trying to erect it. It's intriguing. As dustdevil explained, they were originally going to have a metal tree, at one point it was to be pulled up into place by burner power out there, would have been pretty spectacular. In this photo, the tree is at a 45 degree angle, it looks like it is refusing to go up. So interesting to think about the things we keep attempting in the face of earth's warnings. No, said the tree, even at Green Man, I will not rise here in this place you have brought me. Of course, that's not the factor which prevented it from going up. But the metaphor is great. We can heave and ho and drag all manner of outrageousness out to the playa. We can tap obscene amounts of precious resources to display our unique expressions of art. Still, nature is the real decider. Nature shows us the meaning of cause and effect. I like that the gorgeous giants ended up worshipping something we could not see.
