Looking for Irene...

Post by LindbergMTL » Mon Sep 17, 2007 12:24 pm

I knew this would catch your attention :D

Irene is a fictional character I am writing. And although I have never been to BM, a flash came to me that BM would be totally her.

Since I listen to my incstincts, I am gonna draw her from this anchor.

I hope to get more fun and brilliant leads from this forum as to who Irene is...

For the purpose of my story, she needs to be between 28 and 35 years old.

I hope to get members ideas as why they go to BM, what does it bring to their lives, who they go with, what they have learned, how they have changed and more...

thanks

She is a three legged dog known by her friends as lucky. She was the Grand Master Champion Frisbie Golfer in 2005 and appointed the Purple Heart for her valore in Korea.

Why? Why ever not? Never ask a burner why they go to burning man, you won't get a satisfactory answer. Hot, dusty, a crap load of work and time and money to get there, you'd have to be insane. That makes me and mylarry totally nuts. Do you like kool-aid?

Maybe no one here knows this Irene by her default world name, what's her playa name? Oh, and age doesn't matter much on the playa.

What's her favorite beverage? Does she bring gifts and are they marvelous handcrafted things or cheap plastic crap? Has she read the survival guide or are we going to have to kick her ass for those feathered angel wings?

She is straight although she has fallen in love with a friend, and feels sexual attraction towards some women.

What's her favorite beverage?

something like the following, maybe...

Powdered punch
Gatorade, Wyler's Lemonade, iced tea, and that old favorite, Tang (the astronauts drank it!) come powdered, and you can't pack drinks more efficiently than that. All you add is water. Or vodka. Or tequila.

Does she bring gifts and are they marvelous handcrafted things or cheap plastic crap? That is a great question, what do those 2 different approaches reveal about the characters?

Has she read the survival guide or are we going to have to kick her ass for those feathered angel wings? She tends to be anal, I mean to be overly well prepared, in advance.

Well, some folks just give the gift of helping, the gift of themselves. On the other hand there are people who invest a lot of time and money making beautiful things to give away, such as the glass and ceramic pendants I got this year. That's not inexpensive nor time efficient. So there's a lot of themselves invested in it. Some people want to gift, but don't know what would be good, so they buy trinkets. Not so valued by the community and no one does it many more times than once or twice. Some folks give away food or drink, or performances, or they'll fix your bike for you. How giving is she? Is she crafty? Is she an artist? Fire spinner? Stilt walker? Those are gifts. See how complicated this gets?

And does she volunteer? Where? Doing what? Greeter? fire safety? DMV hottie or Potty Project? B.E.D.? Setting up a theme camp? Does she camp alone, with friends? Tent or RV? Rideshare or fly in? Mutant vehicle or bike? Tutu or boy shorts? Dreads or short spikes? Cotton or faux fur?

And here you thought you'd get an easy answer. And I'm not even messing with you ... bwuahahaha.

LinbergMTL,
People on the board here tend to be less than helpful to the number of people coming on line looking for our help in writing their thesis, sociology, and divinity papers, human interest articles and sitcoms. Not only because we’re all butt heads, but also in part because one of the precepts of Burning Man is radical self reliance, and our experience that it really is impossible to communicate what Burning Man is and means to people. It is different for everyone and it changes over time, each trip to the desert is different. Like wise it is impossible to define an average Burner. I’ve camped with or known Burners who work in coffee shops, were research biologists, worked for the central inelegance agency ., K-12 math teachers, artists and crafts people who actually make a living at it, long haul truckers, insurance salesman, people who do all sorts of things with computers, upper-class housewives. Along with nearly every walk of life, and income level, every imaginable political affiliation and philosophical view point is also represented. Everyone, people from their early twenties to their eighties tend to treat each other as equals, we are all people. A lot of people maybe most like to carry the feeling of community and what ever they’ve found in Black Rock City back to where ever they came from in the world and connect with fellow burners.

It would seem like how can you go wrong with a characterization of a burner since she could be anyone, but that's where your own personal experience is important, that indefinable quality that rings true or doesn’t does she get it or not.

Ok for fun here goes; Irene is 34, she is a legal secretary at a mid-sized tax law firm. She dresses very professionally but a lot of her jewelry incorporates the burning man symbol it a very subtle way. Particularly if she lives on the west coast of the US ( but anywhere really) you might notice her exchanging knowing eye contact or giving a hug to a strange man in his 60s or girl with red dreadlocks in her late teens , and talking as though they where long lost fiends when they might not have met before. She might have the habit of picking up little pieces of other peoples trash and throwing it a way or putting it in a baggy in her purse, but it is so second nature that flows with the rest of her movement and it is never mentioned. Any time anyone around her gets sick she mentions hydration and electrolytes. Even though her musical tastes may be else where , her face lights up when she hears the onsa, onsa, onsa, of psy-trance electronica. She might be considering a European vacation or a trip to New Zealand but would want to work it out so she could attend “No whereâ€

Oh, but I'm hoping it gets beaten into the ground. Flogged. Horse-whipped. Ground up and fed to the cattle. Tossed in the wood chipper. Minced, sliced and diced.

Quick? That's for oats.

Irene, disappeared over the trash fence on Wednesday, and still hasn't made her way back to camp to pack up before the temple burn.

Her campmates are thinking of using her MOOP to build her a shrine in the temple, which will then go up in flames with the rest.

Anyway, I want help with a character from my book. He's a Comanche indian and works in a tire shop. Since I know nothing about Comaches or tire shops, I need a lot of help. Does the tire dust get in his feathers?
