stupid theme camp pet tricks.

Post by Simon of the Playa » Thu Sep 20, 2007 9:06 pm

i'm sure most of you have been wandering around one day on the playa when all of a sudden, it struck you...the PERFECT fucking theme camp....not the perfect FUCKING theme camp....oh, you know what i mean...

but anyway, if you could do it, and it wasnt a logistical or financial problem, what would you do?

some examples from my own past...

in 2000, i wore a sheriff's outfit, claimed i was from camp Bad Cop, and was out taking bribes....because the only good cop, is a BAD cop....

the hippy who blew his stem from his bong into the tent ceiling when i strode in and said "no. it's cool man. i went native years ago...just smoke me up and if the "good" cops ask, i was NEVER HERE.....free coffee and donuts at 5:00pm too..." his reaction was priceless....

i also set up camp entrapment on the esplanade....a table, a whole pile of sugar cubes, a sign that said "free acid" and me in a cop suit...

i would turn my back, and say "I'm not LOOOOOOOOOKING"

some people were very not amused...however, ALL OF THE CUBES WERE GONE AFTER 1 HOUR.....go figure.

the next day i was camp unobtrusive....

i dressed in khakis, and a playa colored longsleeve shirt, and pretty much just lay down in the middle of the splade....

SO MANY PEOPLE ALMOST KILLED ME.....it was a riot....this was during the day too...

if it's playa colored, they wont see it.... i was thinking a WHOLE CAMP IN BIEGE....everything....just set up a string, with bells on the perimeter and see how many guests you get unknowingly, then pop out of seemingly nowhere and quietly welcome them to camp unobtrusive.

The Microsofties were another Idea, i wanted to Annex Gerlach as the Redstone Campus East, and fan out, and just like the child hunter in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, wander around yelling..."I smell Good Design and a Decent operating system" and then when finding a Macintosh, quickly take it, tag it and then burn it...

agreed, that one would take more money, but hey, i hear when bill g. pisses, it comes out as gold, in showers....

so, what is your american dream camp....what have you always wanted to do? ridiculous (oh wait, what am i talking about) or not....the stupiderer the better i always say...like Borsht Belt Village, with a mini Grossingers and omfg, what a buffet...

dish up YOUR menu....

Well, in the long run, I am toying with the idea of a Lovecraftian theme camp. An idea some of my friends and I kicked around one night at a Twin Cities pub was a pub/nightclub called "H.P.'s" with a Lovecraftian theme-- disturbing looking drinks, a different, alien view out of each window, etc. None of us were/are of the right temperament to actually try to start a club, so the idea has pretty much lay fallow. A week long, not for profit club might be doable. I was also thinking of doing up an old school bus with a King In Yellow theme, ever since I had a red Porsche zip in front of me one day on the Beltline with a license plate reading "Cthulhu". I figured a large, menacing, ancient school bus with "Hastur" on its plate would have been a good response.

Anyway, that would be the start. The eventual idea, of course, would be to annex all of Black Rock City into Camp Carcosa. But all of that will have to wait for another year(s). Since "American Dream" is this year's theme, I still feel moved to do a pro-flag burning camp.

So if you can't do a flag burning, can you make a burning flag? Say with candles and flame effects and whatnot? It seems like it'd be silly easy to make a flag out of fire that doesn't look like anything at all when not lit...

2005? There was a box of miscellaneous "free" stuff on Sunday and I saw a sign or box that said "Free Acid." I figured it was a prank, but I have to confess I circled around on my bike to see what was in the box.

Actually, I was sort of hoping there'd be a Lovecraft camp around. There -have- to be some already. Our art vehicle plan, Cuttlefish, could easily adapt into the Great Old One himself.

Yeah, if I did "Cthulhu 2008", I might get free stuff from Chaosium-- buttons & bumper stickers to give out-- stuff like that. Then again, *I* wanted to dress up as the King In Yellow, so I would be supporting the opposition!

I dunno as the BMORG is actually discouraging flag burning, I think that they are just saying that is not the emphasis of the theme. (At least, at any rate, none of them have sent me a message telling me NOT to have a pro-flag burning camp!) I felt that I should do that theme this year as a way to emphasize that freedom was an important part of the Dream, and that, in the end, flag burning is actually a non-issue.

If I do get an official notice, I suppose I could move up the date of doing a Lovecraftian theme to this year, but I think doing it right is actually the more cost intensive of the two camp ideas. (I want to get started working on the Lovecraft theme this year, anyway. I am trying to figure out how to afford an old school bus to start converting. The "City of Carcosa" bus. After tent camping it in 2006, I made my decision that I would try my d---edest to camp by bus next time!)

Ack! Got a job interview to get ready for.

Simon, that "Camp Unobtrusive" is just beautiful.
:pitterpat

Oaky, this is the first thing that popped into my head, and it might be dumb enough to be good:
Camp *insert name here*
Camp Dave, Camp Sue, Camp Herkimer, whatever.
Books and music by people of that name (Dave Grohl, Dave Barry, David Dietz), everyone answers to Dave, maybe Dave-related drinks, and so on.

Okay, i'ma think some more... :laughing*

Actually, what they are saying is
Flag burning or flag worship play no part in this year's theme.
That is under their description/disclaimer about this year's theme. So that is why I had the "dunno as" in front of my statement. Others have said that they are discouraging it.

Anyway, the whole thing is coming from the link to the explanation of the 2008 theme from the first page of the BM website.

BAS, I personally would interpert that to mean the Org is not burning any flags...

Well, yeah. That's what I was saying. As far as I can tell, the BMORG is fine with other people burning flags. ('though, as 'fishy says, I do wonder what that means about the Man's base? Are those flags concrete or something?)

Flag burning is the mindless uber-left equivalent of mindless uber-right flag waving. I rather hope we don't see much of either; it's cheap, easy, and requires no thought or creativity. People burned flags during World War II to protest the war against the Nazis, they burned flags in the civil war to protest the draft or to defend slavery. It's been done, for all kinds of reasons.

If an Iwo Jima vet burned a flag, that would mean something. Some suburban white kid with enough disposable income and freedom to go out to the desert and torch flags at an art festival... wow, that kid's life must really suck. Flag burning used to anger me. Now, it simply fails to impress me. Ho hum, you're mad at America and you pissed some people off and it required nothing of you but a six-dollar flag and a lighter. Sophomoric, unoriginal and pedestrian. Whatever. It's the intellectual equivalent of singing "I'm Proud to be an American" at a peace protest.

Please expand on that. (Note: I extinguished a burning flag with my hands years ago in Portland to demonstrate to the guy that the effort to "defend" it requires much more pain and effort than burning it in the middle of the street surrounded by your friends at some political protest. I got attacked by skinheads as my roommate and I tried to leave, while a bunch of so-called pacifists simply circled around and watched.)

I don't know what you mean but I'm ready to listen.
