destruction of art

Post by Booker » Sun Sep 30, 2007 9:17 pm

So Addis's apparent destruction of BM.Org's art has been chewed over sufficiently. What about destruction and theft of other people's and camps' art? Any reports of that sort of thing this year?

I skipped this year after deep disappointment over similar incidents in 2006. Some dork smacked down a piece set up by a campmate, because he objected to the concept depicted, but at least he had the hair to do it when we sat there watching and could respond. Then burn night some slime oozed into camp overnight and disassembled another piece, going to a lot of trouble to steal parts that were known to have great personal importance to the artist. Probably it was just some eternal crawling loser with a personal grudge.

Can I hope that nothing similar was reported in 2007? Anyone care to justify that kind of spineless, worthless sleaze the way some have justified Addis's vandalism?

The debating technique you are using is known as 'poisoning the well.'

It's only effective if people don't realize what you are doing.

There was a statue of liberty piece burned along with the artist's trailer and tools.
When I talked to him, he wasn't aware if there was a motive at all.
He intends to mutate the piece using what is left and display it.
"Everything is more wonderful when you do it with a car, don't you think?"

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.

why, with all the wonderful and positive things on the playa, are you focussing on such negatives? I know its the thing to do here on ePlaya, but why is that so? Why is that the negative ALWAYS gets more play than the POSITIVE? I started a thread call Positive Vibes About Great Works of Art, etc. Let's post as much there as we have in all the other bitch-threads

I think that people need to realize that not all art is brought to the playa with the intent of burning it. It's not a free-fire zone.

I wasn't trying to effect anything, in the sense of convincing anyone that vandalism of art is a miserable act. I clearly stated my opinion there in plenty strong terms. Surely that snuck up on no one.

But my biggest question was to what extent it has persisted. The example you cite is a disappointing one. Good that the artist looked for ways to build something from the loss, but that doesn't erase the damage to his work and the community as a whole. Possibly that's the only such event that happened, and vandalism is declining. Hope so.

I saw great art - enjoyed it all, I enjoyed greatly the preburn of the man, after all isnt that what "Greening the Man" is all about?" Burning it twice for the same price?

My cup is half full my friend. Overall I give BM 2007 a 7 on my scale of burns - 2005 being a 10, 2006 an 8, 2004 a 8 as well.

Am I letting that "7" bum me out - hell no. I still could not see it all - do it all, or experience it all. So it makes me think about 2008 and how to improve it.

Like Gyre says, quit poisoning the well, and focus on some positives - Did anything go right for you?

later

Huh. It's all good then. No wonder people feel OK about smacking down others' art.
