Is there a way to give Bin Noddin the ability to delete accounts himself? I know you don't want to just go throwing around that power, but perhaps a phone interview and a couple references and you'll be doing as much as most companies do, which usually trust people with more than just some bits of data. He's already working hard at cleaning this place up, might as well utilize that; no?

I was sitting around bored doing what I do when bored - randomly searching for patterns. What I have found is that there's one heck of a lot of new users that are being created here probably by bots for the purpose of link spam.

What I see them doing is creating a bunch of accounts over the course of a day that all link to the same place. This is a common technique, along with journal comments, etc. to raise the ranking of their sites in search engines. So as things stand right now, this site is feeding spammers.

You could probably find every instance of this particular bot pretty easily by searching the database for accounts that match the pattern I was able to pick out:

Name: 8 characters, first always caps, no other.
Loc: 8 characters, as above
Occupation: random thing
Interests: thing, occupation
ICQ: <9 random digits>

Oh, and speaking of spammers, the following accounts are obviously trying to raise their ranking, although in not nearly as systematic way as above, for their "pharmaceuticals":

I never even looked at the member list til Valkyrie posted her research. Looks like close to 90% of new "members" are fakes. Wow! I know Emily Sparkle does a periodic cleanup, but didn't realize the problem was this big.

Yeah, I only went back about 2-3 days before I came up with that list. It's obvious that there's TONS more.

That's why I gave the parameters for a database query, so if you wanted to pull them from the mySQL database directly, it'd be pretty easy, and not likely at all to hit any legitimate users. I used to come up with masks like that to block trojans and from our IRC network.

I've mentioned the linkfarmer folks from time to time.. I even posted my own list or two. I think the problem is a staffing shortage.

I'll second BinNoddin for a promotion.. Emily.. are you here somewheres? How about it? Can we get BN to remove the 7000+ non-users?

Keep up the good work BN.. sometimes you do too good a job, I haven't been able to report a spammer in ages it seems.

Thanks, Val and ToolMaker - but I'm just a guy who's trying to pick up the trash. I know what you're saying but don't have the skillz. I don't know what mySQL is . . . I suppose such a search could be set up with a "confirm" function before actual deletion.
