Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You...
Hallò to all, greetings from Rome-Italy, this is the first time I am writing here, I've found this marvellous event on the net a couple of years ago and now I am planning to come -maybe- next year!!
It doesn't look to be sooo hard experience living in the desert, I've been travelling to international european trance party for a while and raving a lot in the past 12 years but this event looks to be a lot different and really really interesting as concerns arts and expression, and I think it will be a lot astonishing.... can't imagine how that desert can be and the entire enviroment and all the freaky people! Can't wait for that!
Peace to all***

Welcome Hymal, and all you other new people like a number of people have mentioned on the previous page Burning Man is an incredible experience, one that all of the preparation you will need to do will not really prepare you for. You need to plan to bring every thing you will need or like to have with you including food, water, shelter from the sun during the day and from the cold at night , You’ll want a bicycle to help get around and personal illumination to prevent being run over. You will need to focus on drinking enough water to stay health and that can be a hard lesson to learn. You will need protection from the powdery fine alkaline dust , goggles and some kind of dust mask or fabric to filter the very air you breath at times. And it is a blast!
One thing I always harp on is once you enter those gates let go of all your expectations, flow with the world as it unfolds around you . Don’t let your enjoyment of every thing hinge on being able to dance all night or getting laid , or making great contacts or anything in particular, flow with it all as it comes and you’ll have a great time and one that many people say has been very meaningful to them in a deeper sense.
The people and the feeling of community are for me the best part of it all, so I encourage everyone to get to know the Burners in there own areas and the people you meet on line in places like e-playa those connections will help make for a richer experience.

Hallò Zulegoona, thank U for the welcoming and the useful suggestions you gave for a newbie that faces for the first time the BM!! I can imagine how it could be, actually I always have that kind of mood to go some gatherings and let everything happen without expectations... and that's always the best!! But everytime is different, so...I'll check it out when I'll be there. I believe that people makes the "party" and there is no party without good moody people and vibes, so for sure the community has its importance as also the nature and the enviroment! So thank you!!

hello great world.
i guess i would make this official and write a bit in here... i found out about burning man through some friends who went this past year and so now i'm super stoked to go for my first time next year! i've been reading SOOOOOO much material and getting all giddy over the ridiculous amounts of photographs everywhere. i'm already planning outfits and such in my head. i may actually get a second job to pay for this venture. :) it will be worth it, i'm sure.
see y'all on the other side.

Hey, my name is Paul. I was born and raised on a farm in Illinois and currently reside in North Carolina. I've visited, Portugal, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Malta, Turkey, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, and Israel. I am a right-wing hippie with American and Swedish flags tattoo'ed on my arms. I am the first naturally born American from my fathers side of the family.
I take great joy in driving fast (in a contolled env. - speeding tickets blow.) blowing things up, a hamburger on the grill, and drinkin beer while sitting on someones tailgate. I like the simple things.
The concept of BM blows my mind, but, ...never a dull day... and im reading up on it as much as I can. If I do go in 08 - i'll prolly be road trippin it from IL in my mustang with a trunk full of water, ramen noodles, a camera and an open mind, but there seems to be a negative vibe from the current theme "The American Dream." I can see why foreigners could feel alienated with the theme, but from what I gather, BM isn't about a theme, its about establishing community, being self-reliant and resourseful, sharing stories, and helping one another out. But hey, wtf do I know?
take care,

(For the most part the vibe on the e-playa is radically opposed to that of BRC. I think everybody gets their bitchin' out of their system here.) Have a great weekend!

Like he said, the vibe is different here on the Internet. I've only been to BM once, back in 2006 when the theme was "The Future: Hope and Fear". The theme that year didn't seem to impact the event all that much then, people have said 2007's theme didn't have much effect, so it is doubtful that the "American Dream" theme, whether you like, hate, or feel neutral about it, will have much of an influence on your experience. The theme really isn't that important, at least not when compared to things like the "Survival Guide".
Anyway, welcome to ePlaya, where people feel free to express their opinions (even if only of the moment) as much or more than anyone can stand!

I think the real reasoning why I want to go to BM is freedom. Ever since day one, in some way shape or form, I have been in an intrusive, controling environment. I just want to chill, and know that no one is going to scrutinize my every move/mistake/though/action/breath. I want to hang out with a metric shit-ton of weirdos cause if everyone I'm around is "weird", they are normal because they are the majority.

Welcome, fourpointsixmillion... if you want weirdos, then you're in the right place.
Re: the theme, Some people seem put off by it, but most of them I've come across personally would seem to be Americans, oddly enough. Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention, but I'm actually hearing on some European message boards about folks wanting to "recolonize the Americas" as their version of the American Dream. Like steampunks, adventurers in pith helmets, and groups marching around in early 20th century British military garb. Sounds like a grand idea to me and I highly encourage it.
The themes always get some sort of response, but by and large it doesn’t have a major impact on the feel of the event. I'm not too worried about it, myself. It's still bizarre and alter-worldly each of the years I've been.

Thanks, but its not me, actually. And probably too "late model" for the crew I've heard of. Think early British Empire type outfits and uniforms. "In the service of the Queen", and all that.
Camp Apokiliptika might well have a place for camos, though... maybe you too but you'd have to check and see. An eplaya search should turn up a thread somewhere.
Salem, Illinois? I think its near St. Louis, isn't it?
Where in NC?

Currently I live in the Los Angeles area (sad to say I missed the decomp this weekend) and I am just looking for other Burner's who enjoy the art and fun of the Playa!

hopefuly my first time!
This (2008) will hopefully be my first burn. I have a dedicated group of friends who LOVE to get away from current society and experience new things. We belong to a group called the refers rollers out of Livermore C.A. which is similar to bm, but on a much smaller scale, which we attend every year. I have family (bobby osburn) who has attended several burns, and has encouradged me to go for the last 3 or so years. I love art, I love the feeling of self sustainability and just the fact that me and my friends can have great time meeting new people in a setting where, new people are welcomed! (somewhat like the "raves" of the late 90s). My first question (meaning the first in a multitude of questions) is once we have purchased out tickets to bm08, who, or what designates where we set up our modest home base (camp site)? Since it would be our first year, it would be very modest, some tents, a few shade providers, coolers, and the basic essentials for a camp. Or do we have to assimilate and become part of another, much larger camp ground (which i am not opposed to, sharing certain necesaities might be nice to learn from some pro's for our first tme!) Maybe we can arrange a ride share, as I live in Concord california, about 25 muinets out of oakland and sf. Any help/ ideas/ love would be much appreciated. I am going to begin to check this board regularly. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome TT ...
you won't be assigned a camping spot. Theme camps and villages are assigned places, the rest is open camping. You'll be given a map, it isn't so difficult.
here's one discussion of this very topic:

greetings all,
"what's your name?" - Jim Beam....Honestly - James Robert Beam is my given name. And, I don't even drink the stuff. When I used the drink whiskey, it was Jack Daniels all the way to the gutter...lol. Don't drink anymore. I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere Texas surrounded by right-wing sheeple. The stupidity is deafening out here. Myself and a couple of others(trying to recuit the few openminds around) are planning to participate in '08. Objects de'art are in the conceptual phase and I've purchased a small rv to make the almost 1500 mile trek. I revel in all things obscure, wierd, shocking, irreverant, etc, etc.... Although I have limited funds, I have more than 300 days til departure and I don't do anything half-assed.
All Out For BRC '08 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello, still a virgin. Heard about BM back in 03', but was still in school and wasn't until now that I am in a position to do the BM thing.
Still trying to figure out why I want to go to BM. Both my parents were VW-Bus-driving-hitchhiking-long-hair-wearing-peace-loving-war-hating hippies. They didn't go to woodstock, but they did live, for a time, at haight-ashbury and did go to canada during 'nam, and did protest and did get arrested for pot (though it was their roommate that was growing it on the balcony). But that's not why i want to go. I used to be very open-minded and fun-loving and accepting of all people. But since I've forced myself into the corporate world so quickly after college i find that i've become very judgemental, tightly-wound, and, well, angry. I want to go and see all the free spirits and force myself to stop judging and start enjoying. I want to reconnect with my inner hippie. I want to take off my shirt and stop being ashamed of who I am. I want to show off my tats and eat dust. I want to run around in my underwear with my only fears being sunburn and dehydration.
I want to pretend, if only for a week, that I never grew up. I want to pretend that my life really is bigger than the cubicle I work (and live) in. I want to curl up at the feet of The Man and feel, once again, like I'm part of Mother Earth.
