Has the city been cracking down? I don't see them downtown as often as I used to.

I see a lot of musicians at various BART stations at rush hour, as well as set up at the farmer's markets. I've seen a few who do other performances about the bay area, but mostly in heavy foot-traveled areas.
It's hard to have a normal conversation with someone with 6' acrylic rods strapped to your back.

I think it depends strongly on where you live and how good you are. The Two Man Gentlemen Band does well, but they live in New York & supplement themselves by touring.

Worth a listen. Saw 'em live this summer & was blown away.
