Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You...
Hello!
My name is Trikkeh (pronounced "Tricky") and i'm twenty years old currently living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I'm just your average, crazy, glow stick obsessed person. :}
08' will by my first year at BM. Normally I would say that I am nervous, but just from looking at the vids/pics/etc I already know i'll be right at home. I'm extremely anxious and have already start putting together costumes and whatnot. I just can't wait!
Anyway, I stink at introductions but I just wanted to pop my head in here and say hello. Can't wait to meet ya'll!

Welcome Home ...
Costumes, hehe? have you checked out the playalicious playawear tribe? Lots of good tips and hints there. However, what you wear should be the least of your concerns ... my list begins with a ticket, transportation, shelter, provisions, health and safety ... then the costumes.

Yeah. It's a trap to start thinking about this like any other vacation where "what to wear" is high on your list of questions. It's important to read and re-read the survival guide before you start planning your costumes. Chances are, your costume choices will be influenced by what it says. There are a lot of important costume details in a lot of those pictures you're likely to miss if you don't know what you're looking at.
It's hard to have a normal conversation with someone with 6' acrylic rods strapped to your back.

A BM Virgin
Hello,
I am new to the idea of burning man, and have spent many days reviewing information that everyone has posted. As i understand its something that can't be explained, but only enjoyed. I have a small questions or preparation needs. As too the temperature, the amounts of water. That would be recommended per person, how to get envolved in a theme camp etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As far as temperature goes; It's hot as fuck during the day. We are talking 90F+. At night it cools down dramatically. I can get as cold as 30F. Basically be prepared for both extremes and everything in between.I have a small questions or preparation needs. As too the temperature, the amounts of water
I bring 1.5 gallons of water per person per day for drinking and washing. Plan on drinking about 1 gallon a day (you had better be drinking that much). Of course, I bring things like Gatorade and VitaWater because I get burnt out on plain water. If you bring things like that, you'll need less drinking water.
Most important thing is to read the First Timers Guide. You will get most of your answers there.

yo. my name is draconispax, just call me pax.
i've become obssesed with burning man ever since i fiound out about it anout a month ago. i've been reading a few bits of the guide here and there, but i'm a person that requires an exact list and amounts in order to really be expected to do well at anything. it really doesn't help that i have tourettes syndrome and OCD. i really think burning man will be the perfect place for me, since i've more or less been an outcast my entire life.
bad at expressing my ideas(of wich i have millions)
permanentley uncool
over weight
and i hate exercise.
but since i heard of BM i think i might have found my one true home.
unfortunately i live in glens falls new york, and i currently have no job.
so right now i'll just have to sate my curiosity for BM with the boards.
Thanks for listening to me whine,
Draconis Pax

Welcome!
Just do a search on "Burning Man Packing List" and you'll find tons of resources. Here is an article talking about what to bring.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.c ... RVIVAL.TMP
As far as hating exercise... get used to it. You will walk or ride at LEAST 30 miles over the course of the week. You can hitch rides on art cars but they are rarely going where you wanted to go.
Since it sounds like you want to be riding more than walking I would suggest looking for a recumbent trike or quad bicycle (they can be costly though). There is nothing worse than when you are dead tired in the desert sun and having to stand there and hold up your bike. Trikes and quads are much more comfortable (plus you can use it as your seat when hanging out at other peoples' camps).
And now for the standard response:
Memorize the First Timers' Guide and you'll be fine. With OCD, that should not be a problem.

Well, some tips?
Read, learn, memorize the survival guide. They have some very detailed instructions in there.
Find locals. Check out the regional stuff for your area. Start early. See if you can't work out a trade for transport out there. You will not find a free ride, but you very well might find someone who needs help and is willing to take you along.
Also, you can't get free tickets. However, you can get discounted tickets if you fill out a scholarship application that they came up with for people in exactly your position. But you still have to come up with something.
Since we're into the radical self-reliance thing, everyone is expected to pull their own weight, but unlike the rest of the world, you can play by your own rules to do so and aren't hamstrug by the usual "normalicy" constraints. Are you up to that challenge?
If you think you are... Welcome home!

Dracon - where theres a will theres a way. The earlier that you start planing on going - the easier it is overall.
I could totally do BM for a grand from NY. it would be a no frills trip. That 1000.00 would be as a self sufficient person too - almost.
Ticket to BM 200.00 (buy first on the day of sale in january / feb)
airfare to reno 280.00 bought in advance (just checked travelocity)
Ride to BM from Reno - probably free if you look araound. 50.00 if you have to pay another burner.
thats about 530.00 you already own clothes, get a tent, and sleeping bag from a friend, and food in reno.
If you really want to ge there - start now.

I regularly budget nearly $2000 for the week. Of course, after this year's "encounter" with Pershing County's finest, I will not be spending $400 on fireworks ever again. But the cost of our wine alone that we gift is over $300, our art truck (including insurance and maintenance) runs over $1500 (split 30 ways of course), the storage shed for all of our Barbies runs over $900, etc. etc. etc. To go cheap is expensive, to go expensive isn't THAT much more expensive. If I were you I'd lay aside no less than $800 to $1000 and consider it an investment. Money well spent, to be sure.

Dracon - I would hat to see someone miss the burn over something as simple as complacency. Simply start a plan now, and you will be there when the man is buyrned and 50,000 people are screaming.
A simple plan now is way easier than a ruched one later - and 1/2 the cost. Its already been proven many, many, many times that naked people can come through the gate and have an amazing time. Trading their skills, or labor for everything they need. Gift economy it certainly is. Regardless - I would buy the cheaper first round ticket. If you truly cant make it - it will take 20 minutes to sell on eplaya.
thats the start.

Ello all, I go by LHK (pronounced Elkey). I'm a Graphics and CAD Major working my way through college, And have been following Burning Man adventively for a quite few years now. I've known since I learned of Black Rock City that it was my home, and it pains me every year I miss as a poor student. I finally gained the resolve to attempt to go next year, giving me ample time to plan. I'm joining this forum looking for encouragement, aid, and advise on my trip there, as well as fellowship.
I wonder if there are any burners in my area (Tampa, FL) willing to plan with me and possibly a few friends for next year...

Welcome, all. For years I've taken a vacation for just the pleasure of my own company and without my family with whom I go on a different trip. I've done camping, a Zen monastery, natural hot spring quests. When I discovered BM in 2004 I was hooked! Not only do I now have a fulfilling year round hobby making art and something to look forward to all year, but it is now finally OK with me that I never became a rock star. After all, we are ALL rock stars in Black Rock City!

Hello, I am Big"E" and cant wait to be on the playa. I have been to BRC 1 time before, for the second burning man. I am now free and able to go where I want, when I want.
before I return
Thank you for the greeting. I feel as if my spirit has been released from bonds I choose to keep, but really had no control over. I just need to process, filter then expand what I am (re)learning. I am seeking fellow burners for networking in the Upsate NY area (fingerlakes). I just dont know anybody in my area and dont really dig the local scene.
I have all summer off and would really love to be involved with the bigger picture of making BRC happen. Does anyone know of any camps from my area?

Go to the mainsite and look up camps from previous years. Contact them and ask. Start hanging out at the Bar thread in General Discussion.
