WTF?! The man who burnt the man tries for God?
That guy who burnt down the man (who shall remain unnamed) is trying to burn down God. I suppose that's an upgrade.

I will officially no longer be representing any sense of "Reason" with regard to people's attitudes on Addis. Feel free to go nuts...

begging for attention
How transparent does it get. He didn't have enough stuff on him to have much impact, the cops were tipped (by him, hello), and here we are doing just what he wants, paying attention. Sigh. Addis is pathetic. And I'm sure he needs help, which he won't get in jail. His actions are loud enough, who needs his explanations attached to them? If he actually stays locked up for a while, we could all turn our attention to people and events that actually deserve it. People who are doing cool, productive, and even entertaining things. Yeah!

One report said "four charges, all felonies." Talk about an over-achiever! 7 or 8 felony charges in two different states, with only one fire (that burned something scheduled to burn anyway) resulting in no personal injuries and very little destruction of property. Boy, are authoritative people going to get tired of this guy...

I don't think it's going to help his NV case. Commiting the same crime while out on bail does not put one in the good graces of the judge. It may well be that he is trying for the insanity side of things, but I see nothing but bad for him. I think Cali is going to have to extradite him if they want to prosecute.mdmf007 wrote: Coming across as a nut will certainly help him out in his nevada case...

How many churches have over 40,000 members that make annual pilgrimages from around the planet, donate time and lots of money, stay up 24/7; pay homage to a figure fastened to a post, dance with fire; and that figure gets burned while the faithful chant????MoisturePup wrote:That guy who burnt down the man (who shall remain unnamed) is trying to burn down God. You burn the books, the pews, the carpets, the curtains/tapestries, the interior walls, wiring, rafters, the balconies, the roof, financial or historical records and other documents, everything inside that has any meaning to the people who use it. (San Francisco structures don't still use natural gas, do they?)mars wrote:How can you burn down a cement cathedral?
Truthfully: Do people -honestly- believe you can't cause a hell of a lot of damage to the interior of a building just because the exterior is concrete? Seriously? Have people not heard of black metal geeks burning ancient churches in Norway and Russia during the '90s? I lived in an old brick building at OSU with lathe-and-plaster walls inside. The fire marshall said if it caught fire you had six to ten minutes to get out of the building before the interior collapsed.
Also, did people not actually read the SFGate article stating that the police were tipped off by Addis' neighbor?
It seems to me like a lot of people are in denial.

I assure you there is plenty of contents in a church to fully engulf it. There are interior walls, carpets, pews, desks, classroom materials, filing cabinets, etc.
once it gets rolling it rolls. Lots of vid on youtube of cement and stone buildings burning. i believe they described it as a church - not as an empty grain silo. so there is an interior of some type/

Wow, how much can we really assume here? I think I hear some assum-o-meters whirring out of control. "Cathedral arson attempt," and without a match being struck, or evidence of a fire having been set, or even prepared. The guy was "booked on suspicion of attempted arson, possession of an incendiary substance, possession of explosives and possession of explosives with intent to terrorize a church." Then, the article continues, "Deputy Chief Morris Tabak said Addis had only a small amount of explosives." Further, "'Did he have the capability to do substantial damage? Absolutely not,' Tabak said." So the Deputy Chief (of fire or police?-unattributable) presumably an authority on the subject stated Addis absolutely did NOT have the capability to do substantial damage.
So:
Possession: yes. (stupid move in my opinion.)
Intent: unknown
Capability to substantially damage: "Absolutely not," (Tabak)
Actual damage: None (none identified)
The court system is founded on the principle of assumed innocence until guilt is proved. That is exactly what we all would want for ourselves.
I'm not saying he didn't do some things wrong, but isn't the butane in my cigarette lighter an "incendiary substance?" Do "firecrackers" or "M-80s" meet the definition of "explosives?"
Wow, imagine a guy carrying firecrackers in a belt, and a lighter in his pocket.
I wonder how long he had to wait around for the cops after he called them.

P.S. Just so you all know:
1) Cement holds concrete together (Aggregate+Cement+Water=Concrete)
2) An empty grain silo with significant dust inside can be super-explosive.

Holy cow! Critical thinking skills aren't dead after all. There's hope yet.
I loved that post so much I'm tempted to post a link to it in a few other places. It's the truth even if it's not what some people wanna read or consider.

The man who torched the Man is out on bail for an act of arson he was photographed committing, his neighbor reports his intent to burn a church to the police, and he just -happens- to be caught outside the church with illegal fireworks and "incendiary" materials according to the police who have him in custody and the court that's holding him for nearly half a million dollars' bail...
I don't freakin' care what he's charged with, what sticks, what his punishment will be or what his motivation might have been: The guy's a dumbass, and not only is he a dumbass for being caught with incendiary devices while half a million people are in shelters because the state is on fire, he's an arrogant dick for it.
What alternative sort of "critical thinking" is there such that I should feel compelled to extend him any benefit of doubt? He'll get a legal trial. Meanwhile, "art" isn't an excuse for arson any more than it is for rape, assault or murder. The fact that he was caught before he did whatever he was clearly there to do does not in any way mitigate the fact that he's an arrogant asshole who not only burned the efforts of the people who built the man, he taunted them by hanging out in front of a church with an ammunition belt filled with implements of fire.
Also, finally, isn't an assumption itself that a match hadn't been struck or a fire prepared? Who knows, I guess. Maybe he just brought all that shit they said he had to the church that late at night in order to pray. Wouldn't want to assume anything. But even if his presence was altruistic, he's still a dumbass. (Of course, maybe he's not actually in jail and the whole thing was a media hoax. If so, I'll apologize for calling him a dumbass and an arrogant dick.)

According to the Kansas City Star, someone vandalized the Westboro Baptist Church last night. They've posted a video clip covering the incident this morning.
http://videos.kansascity.com/vmix_hoste ... id=1550434
I'm curious what people think about this...especially with the Grace Cathedral incident on people's minds. Is this sort of conduct ever justified? While I hate Fred as much as anyone else I still feel this was wrong. Comments?

I feel it's wrong. I think what the phelps family does is also wrong. (There is a reason "disturbing the peace" is a crime almost everywhere)
Context shift: Steve Irwin (Croc hunter) spent 20+ years poking wild animals, wasn't it really just a matter of time until one poked back?
Somebody poked back at the phelps family publicly. It was to be expected-but that doesn't make it right.
Bottom line: Leave me and my stuff alone-I was already leaving you alone. ( I'll bet they teach that in Westboro Baptist Church Sunday school in a lesson called, "The Golden Rule," ironically enough.)
