Sheesh, that was depressing. Especially since I just finished watching Children of Men like 10 minutes ago, for the first time. Where's that rope...

Yeh, but Children of Men ultimately had a positive ending suggesting that things might get better.

Even when a Dem takes the White House most of his/her political capital is gonna get tossed on cleaning up eight years of Buh's blunder.

The dems might not take the White House if they don't stop trying to make fools of each other. The Republicans are just sitting back right now collecting soundbites, ("I believe in the Easter Bunny, I believe in Santa Claus" - Edwards, "I saw a UFO once," etc) watching the Dems turn on Hillary. They never seem to learn this.

On a more positive note, did you notice the Pink Floyd pig floating in the window behind the Animals building in Children of Men? What a cool detail!

The dems might not take the White House..

If they keep acting like republicans. They lost me months ago.

For the life of me I can't see the difference between the big 2 parties. I'll prolly vote Libertarian or Green depending on who seems to have more support. I just want change. I wish I could vote none of the above and get new candidates.

What if they couldn't certify an election unless they got at least 80% turn out?

What if they had to uphold and enforce the Constitution or automatically lose their jobs and pensions?

In any case, Diebold can get them any returns they dial in.

Oh, Diebold is a problem alright. My question was in responce to the whole scorched earth stuff of purging voter rolls and closing polls and depressing turn out for the other side and trying to shake it up in some sense rather than just treading the same old paths...

We need the UN here in force to monitor our seriously corrupt election system. The problem is that Diebold conveviently skips the whole silly hard copy nonsense.

Our loyal opposition party has had 8 years to address this. Hmm. Any decade now..

Don’t go to school
Don’t buy anything

unfortunately the only way that will work is if several hundred thousand people turn out for it.

Yep, so tell a few hundred thousand of your friends.

Frankly, nothing else is showing any signs of doing a bit of good. I tried the whole “vote for the oppositionâ€

In 1943 the Danes managed to save 7,200 of their 7,800 Jewish neighbors from the Gestapo. They had no blogs, no television, no text messaging—and very little time to prepare. They passed their apartment keys to the hunted on the streets. They formed convoys to the coast. An ambulance driver set out with a phone book, stopping at any address with a Jewish-sounding name. No GPS for directions. No excuse not to try.

that's both beautiful and informative ; I never really learned anything about what roll the Danish played in the war

That has become very clear over these last 8 months, as our loyal opposition party whines that it doesn't (sing it with me now!) Have the votes. To do anything.

This is of course pure bullshit, as any Repub congress would happily show you. No, if they so chose, they could do these things tomorrow:

Initiate impeachment proceedings against first Darth, then Condi and Chimpinator.

STOP FUNDING the illegal occupation. Simple as that. Just don't give the beast any more food (money)

A little trickier, but just as important, maybe RTFM. It's called the Constitution, and they all swore to defend it from enemies, *foreign or domestic*.

Happy Guy Fawkes Day, everyone!

Didn't the Danish King wear a star of david and just about everybody else follow suit? Makes a nice scandinavian contrast to quisling.

So when one corrupt system monitors another corrupt system the results are not corrupt? Like a double negative?

Three rights make a left. Throw in a couple jabs and an uppercut, and you really have something.

The toughest thing to reconcile is that even if you are doing something, if the media deems it so, you're doing nothing. I remember at the start of the war, there were pretty constant and consistent minimalizations of the size and impact the protesters were having.

Of course, in densely populated areas, this doesn't matter so much. Word of mouth and friends telling friends spreads things just fine. But in more isolated areas, smaller towns and even in the 'burbs, the closed community nature of their existence increases their dependence on the media for information outside their small communities. (DON'T get me started on the 'burbs.)

You might note a certain delineation of political leanings reflecting these lines.
It's hard to have a normal conversation with someone with 6' acrylic rods strapped to your back.

Yes!!!! But it's less like a double negative and more like removing the single interest angle.

Look, to borrow from Finnegan's sig. line, you put two or more criminals in the same room and they're gonna find the rat, despite being low-life scum themselves, because they're not in bed together and not working together.

My advice though, keep an eye on Orange, and tape your fucking ears down before you go into that voting booth in one year.
