How do you tell w hen a thread is good?

Post by theCryptofishist » Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:26 am

I stuck to that NuVinci thread too long, not that I resent its very existence, as I do with some others, but I didn't understand all the technical stuff, and sort of felt that continuing to press the link was a waste of time. But everyonce in a while, an unpromising looking thread suddenly becomes very funny or silly or heartfelt or in some other way superior. I wonder what I've missed over the years.

Hmmm, I read every thread, (mostly, most days) some more carefully than others, and there are days I remind myself I'm doing it because I feel I have to. For every thread which is great, there are a dozen dreary, unoriginal, insipid, poor written and conceived threads. For a talented community, we produce a lot of chaff.

And for some reason, twice now I have read the topic title as "threat" rather than "thread." How do you tell when a threat is good? When they're breaking in your windows and savaging your flowerbeds?

But thats the beauty of it - if its stupid it dies quickly, simply stop posting and it goes away and drops down the list.

Some great threads start out with a pretty benign topic, then through Thread creep I guess you would call it - it morphs into something pretty cool.

When Regyna visits it. Anything ole Nipples was in was excellent too. Rob hit a few highs. I'll go for poetry and wit....we need more.

When a thread has gone too far into the realm
of lame, I usually attempt to turn it into a dick joke.
Feel free to use this as your guide.

But there doesn't appear an addendum after the title that says "Contains Greenpenis dick joke in last five posts" so there's a good chance I won't actually click and find out.

I'm not reading that NuVinci thread again. Not unless I know there's been thread drift, and that it's gotten silly.

One persons bad thread is anothers daily vitamin. A perfect example is fire elfs thread. I rather like the NuVinci thread since its about bikes and innovation. I try not to judge threads, even ones I don't quite understand. For instance, at first I didn't know what the fuck the whole Zsu Zsu thing was about. After reading up on it some I got it, albeit after the rest of eplaya. I now have warmed up to the lil tramp and look forward to watching the trailer burn. I guess in the end its whatever floats your cabin cruiser on the playa. I tend to go for the technical stuff since I'm not always the best with words. You can never spend too much time talkin about makin domes, fire art, contraptions, and mutant vehicles.

I know pretty quickly if a thread is going to be boring or not - some are obviously more interesting than others. this one is marginal so far.

Not always....some of the best threads have started out with flaws...
Also Fishy, Toolmaker, Cowboyangel....when they post I'll usually click on the link just to see what's been said and I'm rarely disappointed.

I think that the easiest way to tell if a thread is good is if it
leaves a light, buttery aftertaste in your mouth, but not too nutty.

K1 got deleted and the others got changed when I added or cleared out sock puppets, lost passwords, or had other technical issues. With K5 it marks when I cleaned out all but 2 sock accounts. I kept one (Taqiyyah) for any Apokiliptika stuff that might come up, and the other is a backup account since the moderators can be slow on responding to technical glitches..especially with my accounts since a few mods still seem to have some resentment towards me.

Anyway back on topic....

This site is really great, I haven't been there in awhile and it looks like they still have great articles getting submitted.

About that TEVA thread.. I skip that one since I don't know wtf a TEVA is. Now that I know its about feet I should post some foot fetish stuff.. like the hanky code which is a silk stocking or shoe insole in the back pocket.
