Science Fiction Prophecy and Surveillance Society

“A Party member lives from birth to death under the eye of the Thought Police. Even when he is alone he can never be sure that he is alone. Wherever he may be, asleep or awake, working or resting, in his bath or in bed, he can be inspected without warning and without knowing that he is being inspected. Nothing that he does is indifferent. His friendships, his relaxations, his behavior towards his wife and children, the expression of his face when is alone, the words he mutters in sleep, even the characteristic movements of his body, are all jealously scrutinized. Not only any actual misdemeanor, but any eccentricity, however small, any change of habits, any nervous mannerism that could possibly be the symptom of an inner struggle, is certain to be detected. He has no freedom of choice in any direction whatever. Nothing was your own except the few cubic centimeters inside you skull.â€

You should try reading it WITH ONE EYE !!!

No little fish no, why science fiction seems to predict the future.

In my opinion anyone can "predict" the future by watching trends. If history keeps repeating itself and the cycle of habit is more than 3/4 done, then there is a pretty good chance you can make a pretty good guess at what is coming.

So if you take those existing trends, add existing technologies, then mix in a little "literary license" what do you have?

Your thoughts?

yeah, i know it's long and depressing.....i'm trying out cymbalta and i wanted to see if it worked....i hear it makes you horny too...i digress..

i received it from a friend who has actually gone a little mad herself researching this monster...it's hard to come face to face with an immovable object or juggernaut such as this and not feel small and lost.

i started to read it, became engrossed, and actually finished it, unlike my normal 15 second attention span usually allows.

so, if you wanna break it up, maybe serialize it, it's worth the read...

and C-Fishy, could you please turn off your coffeemaker., it's electronically interfering with the cctv coverage of your home.....nice placemats by the way...

also, the earring you lost is under the bed...

Cymbalta has a pretty serious side effect, read on http://www.cymbalta.com/depression/safety.jsp

Also your post wasn't depressing, it was fact full in the direction of the authors opinion. Good stuff.

I like your poetry as well.

thanks erri.....here's another, but as you can see, i've been stuck in the same pentameter for years now.

I watch closely, the others
to see what they do
behavioral patterns
are'nt anything new
whether Skinner or
Murray or DelGado too
with the flick of a switch
they can change me or you
like the "Lord of the flies"
or "Lost" in Jonestown
and who needs hypnosis
when's there T.V. and sound
and how many are out there
who win just to lose
like a human time bomb
with a very short fuse
eating ritalin, prozac
and adderall too
sucked down with a soda-
pop orange green or blue
as they try to adapt us
to the future to come
where you eat or be eaten
and freedom's for some
and now i cant sleep
as i stare through the night
thinking over and over

yes, i know, it sounds a little "paul addis meets dr. suess" but i was referring to his luddite manifesto that Bill Joy of Oracle also grudgingly had to agree that in premise was correct.

the use of technology b4 we even test the potential consequences (i.e. cell phones and tumors) and the fast tracking of drugs and medical procedures that may or may not have side effects that are WORSE than the cure provides, is the essential gist of Ted's problem with our tech heavy society.

now i'm all about gadgets, and cool shit, and quite frankly i think Dr. Megavolt is a god, but i can also conclude that with so many Microwaves et al bouncing around us constantly, there must be some kind of effect on our health, and our mental well-being...

i mean, have you seen what a microwave will do to cheese and or or Dick Cheney?

so no, i dont want to blow up the random professor, but i would like the science AND the business community to try to slow down the pace of adopting and mainstream use of potentially dangerous doo-dads.

Slow down? I don't think that is going to happen. Do you?

My two cents is that they, the science and the business community, need to redirect their attentions to more worthwhile projects. I do understand that it is all about money and the perception of desire that causes blah blah blah to blah blah blah blah blah, but I ramble on.

In short, the ethics of a few are guiding the many.

Yea, that's like we all feel sometimes.......Not that it is wrong, I'm with ya, but, the business/science community is also fueled by it.............

So have we, society, learned nothing? Are we destine to repeat the same mistakes over and over? Isn't one of the definitions of "Insanity", doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results?

It may be a good time to review our history and see what is going to happen next. This quote sums it up nicely.

"If man indeed is the writer of his own destiny, then perhaps man should put his quill down and review what he has written so far."

I think one of the problems we have is that as a species we aren't very good long term thinkers. Some cultures are better at it than we are, but those still have their blind spots. Life for humans for most of our existance has been such an immediate struggle for survival that we have trouble taking a long view.

And then there are those who use history for their own ends, distorting it in the process...

I agree, do you think that is because we are a young species?

It seems we never apply what did work and trash what didn't.
theCryptofishist wrote:Life for humans for most of our existence has been such an immediate struggle for survival that we have trouble taking a long view.
That is so true, there so much, no one really should have to struggle for basics. To few, with to much, once again.

As animals, most species typically last about 1 million years.

Seems like everything wil end up written in the sand. As technologies rapidly change, soon to view anything from the past will require a machine from a museum. Stone tablets and hemp parchment, papyrus will outlast everything else and may be all that's available to the future, seems like

It is so true. Stories and fables also seem to be a popular way to pass information.

The like the Mayan fable/recipe for chocolate is a good example. http://www.xibalbacacao.com/about.htm
