G’day,
My virgin self will be travelling from Australia to next years burn, knowing no one in USA and maybe more importantly no one going to Burning Man.
Burning Man will be just one stop on my backpacking adventures so I will have limited space to bring my burning man essentials.
I was wondering how possible it is to be prepared and self surfactant going into burning man without a vehicle. Would I be right in searching for a lift from Reno close to the event, are their buses or any other sort of service available?
During the months leading up to Burning Man I hope to make some friends online (via forums such as this), hopefully a lift and a friendly welcoming invite to camp along side of will present itself, but at this moment I am only looking for information.
I plan to visit California for a few weeks before Burning Man also, is there a large number of people that travel from there? Also how long does it take to get there from there?
I am not totally sure of what I am after with this thread, but at the moment any information that will help me plan ahead is a godsend.
Thanks.

There are a certain amount of people who offer rides from the airport. Might also want to google Black Rock City International Burner Hostel. (I hope I got that right.) Nogganoodle on this board flies in from England every year, she might have some tips.

California is a big state (ok not Australia big). From the San Francisco Bay Area it is about a 6 hour drive to the playa and that does not include the line to get in which is typically another 2-3 hours depending on when you arrive.I plan to visit California for a few weeks before Burning Man also, is there a large number of people that travel from there? From Los Angeles you are talking about an additional 6 hours.

Lots and lots of people do this - no worries. You even speak the same language as we do (more or less). I am always amazed and delighted at the number of first timers that show up despite language/culture/distance barriers. Read this board and get in touch with Hagey at the International Burner Hostel for hints and tips.
I'll never forget running into Hagey at the Albertsons in Sparks last year. What a hoot. He had about 10 people with him and entered the parking lot with a bugle fanfare, then made the rounds of people loading up in the parking lot to say hello.

There will be a rideshare board available a few months before the event, and many others arrange rides and such through http://www.craigslist.org/
I will have crash space and a passenger seat available, but I'm way up in Spokane which is an international destination for almost nobody.
California is a big state. The most convenient place to leave from would be the San Francisco area due to location and the high number of burners there, though other areas have plenty of burners as well.
