BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- A grieving father won a nearly $11 million verdict Wednesday against a fundamentalist Kansas church that pickets military funerals in the belief that the war in Iraq is a punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality...

The church and three of its leaders -- the Rev. Fred Phelps and his two daughters, Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebecca Phelps-Davis, 46 -- were found liable for invasion of privacy and intent to inflict emotional distress...

The church members testified they are following their religious beliefs by spreading the message that the deaths of soldiers are due to the nation's tolerance of homosexuality...

Earlier, church members staged a demonstration outside the federal courthouse.
Church founder Fred Phelps held a sign reading "God is your enemy," while Shirley Phelps-Roper stood on an American flag and carried a sign that read "God hates fag enablers."

Members of the group sang "God Hates America" to the tune of "God Bless America."

Seriously, you people have no clue about this group, their resources, and their methodology. This is barely a speedbump for them, much less a showstopper. In fact...this is a blessing for them, the resulting media attention is another blessing. They've landed more coverage in the past 48 hours than they've had in 11 months.

And to illustrate the point they've already created a new sign: Thank God for 10.9.

There is no 'victory' against this church although an $11 million judgment represents a whole butt load of *candy Fred is gonna have to get his kids to sell.

*this is in reference to a story written a while back by a reporter for the local Kansas City newspaper. Several sources for the story were two of Phelp's estranged children (they're not all crazy) who told of their father making them sell school fund raising candy well into the night which he then took because their family was so destitute. They also mention sexual abuse, child abuse, drug addiction, tax fraud along with a host of other 'sinful' behaviors all attributed to their pious freak of a father.

Be careful though, some of the shit here is pretty graphic - especially when the boys speak of being beaten with an ax handle.

"After 40 strokes, I was weak and nauseous and very pale. My body hurt terribly. Then it was Nate's turn. He got 40 each time. "I staggered to the bathtub where my mom was wetting a towel to swab my face. Behind me, I could hear the mattock and my brother was choking and moaning. He was crying and he wouldn't stop." The voice in the phone halts. After an awkward moment, clearing of throats, it continues: "Then I heard my father shouting my name. My mom was right there, but she wouldn't help me. It hurt so badly during the third beating that I kept wanting to drop so he would hit me in the head. I was hoping I'd be knocked out, or killed...anything to end the pain. "After that...it was waiting that was terrible. You didn't know if, when he was done with Nate, he'd hurt you again. I was shaking in a cold panic. Twenty-five years since it happened, and the same sick feeling in my stomach comes back now..." Did he? Come back to you?

I've had personal, make that direct physical run-ins with Fred and his band of idiots since 1990 so this is just more of the same.

Anyone doing comprehensive Google searches on the Reverend will likely run into references to the Southern Poverty Law Center. When considering any info from them one would be wise to dig deeper into their finances and question what they publish. I'm not saying they're wrong...there's truth there but they're not as pure and innocent as they would lead one to believe.

11 million dollars may not hurt them enough to make them stop, but it's established a legal precedent - the word needs to be gotten out to everyone who could concievably have a case to bring.

The last time I had direct physical run-ins with them was in front of the Cathedral in New Orleans last February when they had signs that said "Thank God for Katrina." In New Orleans. Told me that it was God's punishment for being Catholic. I pointed out that I'd just driven clear to Biloxi, and those are god-fearing folks in Mississippi, but there wasn't a Baptist, Methodist, JW, Mennonite, Episcopalian or any other church standing for mile after mile...but the Cathedral is still there.

I'm surprised the NOPD didn't "find" them on the riverbank the next morning.

Oh goody. Someone finally laid the crack down on Phelps and his cronies. They're the exact same folks that got evolution stricken from public school curriculum in that state. They're actually a pretty formidable political force in Kansas, scary as it sounds. I wonder what sort of backlash that's having on their supporters.

His only followers are his brainwashed, dimwitted family. And trust me, having met the guy in person on several occasions, seeing him on TV is a much more pleasant experience.
