I want to rent an RV next year...any suggestions?

Post by alphabetty » Tue Sep 04, 2007 8:28 am

I think the dust finally got to me. This year my tent ripped apart and I had to re-clean it every day after the damn dust storm. I'm ready to rent an RV next year - any suggestions for where and how? I'd like one that is big enough to share with two other friends. Don't need lots of luxury...Thanks.

Click on the Nevada state for info. They have a Burning Man special, where they even set it up and take it down for you. All you have to do is drive in and show up. I havent rented here before but it seems like a great deal for that.

Ha, did you compare the prices of that BM special? It's as much per day for BM as it is per week out of Vegas

The trick is to cover your rental with plastic or canvas protecting from the dust. Food Wrap is the best. just buy the industrial stuff that they sell for packing. leave some holes for the air conditioning since that will be the main reason for having a RV. Start at the front of the RV making sure you overlap the wrap.

that's what you to get when you buy a cheap tent! Those walmart tents are just disposable tent that you just return to walmart and get your money back.

someday the whole playa will have not places for a tent because of all the RV's, but most of us that use tents would be not attending long before that.

Buy a springbar.com tent. They're the real thing for the playa and not much more then a quality backpacking tent.

Don't rent... buy. It's cheaper.

Besides, no place will rent if they know you're going to BM.

They hate the dust - it wrecks their rigs.

We picked up ours on Craig's list. We low balled offered and got it.

Brought our diesel on Craig's list too - it was all set up for a 5th wheel.

And let me tell you. it was worth every penny we spent. It was great.

The problem with buying one is storage. Those who live in apartments in the city are not very likely to have space for an RV.

As far as protecting an RV I would imagine plastic wrap would eventually come loose by day 2. What I've seen used and what I use for construction is carpet protection plastic. Costs around $30 for a roll that would cover the entire RV including furniture. It comes in different widths but basically it's a 24" wide roll of plastic with one sticky side. After the burn, do a good sweeping and pull it up and toss it. I would imagine it's less of an impact then running a vacuum for 3 hours during cleaning.

True that about apartments. K... how about finding a friend with property to store it on. There might be something that could be traded - like use of the RV for guests between burns or the like.

It's just that I called around and everything is rented that week really early in the year and if you tell them it's for BM they won't rent to you.

Besides, the RV's really do get full of playa no matter what precautions one takes. Our RV is playa plastered. We like it that way. Every time we go in there - we're back on the playa. Deja vu.....

Share it with someone in the burbs in exchange for curb space.
Then you sell it when you get back.

Uh...we bought an older RV especially for BM and it's actually parked on the edge of a cornfield. Is that close enough? It's actually so close it can get washed by the end sprayer off the center point sprinkler.

Edit: The previous posts are right about it's cheaper to pick up a used one. $1500 for ours...but after some bartering it cost us only the gas to get it out here. Of course at 6 mpg...that wasn't cheap but with that 440 under the hood it won't have any trouble running 75 on the interstate.

Wouldn't wrapping an RV in shipping plastic wrap make it into an oven? If you must have an RV you are better off buying a used one. Same price as a weeks rental in most cases. In regards to tents.. look for the quality of manufacture, things like good double stitching and reinforced stress areas are something to look for. Tent placement is also important, we used vehicles as windbreaks in 07 and if I recall NOBODY had a tent take a vacation on them during the duststorms. I used a 40 dollar tent from sportsmnsguide that was better made than a 200 dollar tent of a similar size. Also.. no fiberglass poles to break. :)

Not if your using the air conditioner.

I was joking, really! and please the Biodiesel in the generators with something to block the sound from project into the next camp unless it's occupied by another RV.

We do have a walk-in tent only area. What about an RV only area on the other side of the playa?
