Blue Christmas...

This morning when I woke up, I could hear Elvis' song "Blue Christmas" in my head. It's still there. (Go away, Elvis!!) And on my way to work I weeped a bit. I miss my fiancee Gerry and all those family members and friends that aren't here on earth anymore. It makes my Christmas pretty blue. But I'm okay. I'm grateful and thankful for the wonderful memories I have of all these people that I love...and for the friends and family I still have around today.

I'm gratful for this past year. Today I am at peace with God and man. Merry Xmas to all. It's been a grate ride.

Thanks to everyone who has posted words of inspiration, especially Rick and Samtzu. My roommates (and best friends) moved away to follow a teaching job, and shortly after my dad ended up under the knife with a brain tumor. These combined events and the financial and time burdens of having to move (yuck) made me miss this year's burn. Instead of taking one of the job offers I'd received, I'm living with pops and trying to help him out the best I can. It's tough, especially when I don't get much cooperation or gratitude from him at times, and it can sometimes feel like there's no relief in sight.

I'm usually gifted with eternal optimisim, even in long-lasting bad situations, and it's been pushed to the limits lately. I just want to remind everyone that it DOES always get better. Just not necessarily on your schedule.

Hang in there.

I grew up in a big, extended family and they ALL came over for Christmas. It wasn't uncommon for there to be fifteen people at the dinner tables — yes, we had to set up multiples. Houseful of people!

Thirteen years ago, as of a couple weeks ago, my Dad was the third in a one-two-three-four combination of deaths in the immediate. Christmas hasn't been the same since. It scattered the family.

There's just going to be three of us for Christmas this year and my brother will take off the second the dishes get cleared from the table. It's been that way for the past thirteen years and I'm still having trouble getting used to an almost-empty house on Christmas.

It's odd...I don't ask for much in the way of presents, I only asked for some sculptural soaps and a couple t-shirts, and I spent about $40 on my gifts this year. Everyone says that gifting on the holidays is obligatory, but you know what? Yeah, it's obligatory, but I'm happy to do it anyway. The thing I miss most about Christmas then and Christmas now is...I miss the people. Cherish your family...watch out for "Orphan" gatherings in your area...if nothing else, get the house cleaned up and host one yourself. DON'T BE ALONE.

Gift as much or as little as you can bear, and in the way that you can. It's an imperfect compromise, but that'll give you some information that will make it better next year.
