Black Rock City Address System Unveiled

I am trying to do exactly what you said.
Thank you.
You know..
How can you believe
you should not assume
Again, you should not assume
you must be prepared for the sceptic who will question the pronouncements
Name-calling is... the process of placing what the writer dislikes or opposes into a generally odious category without justifying the use of the terms.
Name-calling appeals to prejudice, not to rationality.
would you do it too?

Golly. I take a little time off to go work on recabling my studio and come back to find this thread has gone native in an eplaya kind of way...
Thanks for your constructive thoughts, robbidobbs (and for all that great porta-potty work!) and jaycerochester. And thanks also to all the playa theorists wondering about context. Of course, always happy to have fire elf humming in our general direction!
Intuitiveness/naturalness is definitely the goal for the more detailed addressing scheme. The "totally staggering" test is probably a more stringent metric than we need to say we have a successful system, at least in part because people in that state are just happy to land somewhere friendly. But we have always had ease of use in mind. The Internet address format seemed like it might be intuitive at this point in history.
We are hoping comments with suggestions will help us build a sense of what works for folks and make revisions that improve usability and already know that chaos just means more dead letters, so we have a concept that being able to specify a place is good. The clock approach--which btw is and has always been part of the plan for locating points on letter streets--is clearly here to stay. The question is how it sits in an address. I'd also still like to see some indicator for people without mailboxes who are camped some distance in from the street, like >>> for someone about 3 tents or vehicles in from the street.
We also know that, cheap as mailboxes may be, many burners, especially solos and those in tiny camps, will never put up a mailbox or name their camp and put up a sign, but it is a splendid idea for delivery of mail when no one's home. First choice for BRCPO Delivery Specialists, of course, is that personal touch!

Maybe friendly camps need to put up a picture of a happy dome, so that staggerers will know where to land.philosopher wrote:The "totally staggering" test is probably a more stringent metric than we need to say we have a successful system, at least in part because people in that state are just happy to land somewhere friendly.

I had a vision last night.
Cardstock, sharpies, and duck tape. Fold the cardstock less than half way, emblazen with camp name and address, tape to any structure facing the street be it RV, tent, dome, or car.
And - voila - a makeshift mailbox ready to receive mail and as an extra added bonus it also serves as a camp marker.
All is good in the world.

Same concept for the weekend burn.
As street signs disappear, as they always do, replace with sharpie emblazened cardstock duck taped firmly to fence post.
To bad they don't make glow in the dark cardstock. That would be perfect.

You could paint the cardstock to make it glow in the dark...
Okay, so ten out of ten for style, but minus several million for good thinking, yeah?

Hi Donna. Thanks for your efforts in working towards a better method of addressing. For the record, I tried very hard not to be snarky in my post about the idea a ways back. Thanks!
A plan is what you vary from.
Destiny Lounge 3D will be at Bradbury and 3:15 this year as a part of the 404: Village Not Found group of camps! Come see us!

not quite chaotic enough for me
gosh, that hardly touches it for me. Having been part of the BRCPO for many years, I have to say
of course, I love it. it is so thoughtful.
the thing is, how hard do you want to think when you're on the playa? me? not this hard. I want to play, and so less numbers and pinpointing the better. I kinda like having to ask people quesstions - have you seen this camp? do you know where this person is?
and yet, for many people this will provide some new perspective on the playa. for me, I will probably mostly ignore it and keep deliverating as I have in the past.

even though the odds are exceedingly small, i JUST might bump into Donna on the Playa, so i have decided NOT to participate this year.
it's all Donna's Fault....EVERYTHING IS....right down to the clogged toidies.
She has Filled my heart with Hate, and so therefore, i must protect the Playa from possible violence by locking myself in a room (top floor, duh) of Circus Circus and eat more Bacon and Jello than anyone ever should.
maybe rent a couple of movies....
