Those would be great to send out of the playa or inside the playa.

My 2008 address is probably, but might change:

Like mereth, I know less about scientology as a religion by viewing the whole series (nine total) Kopel then ever before!

The techniques used are similar to this cold war mind control

Look up the books "The Barefaced Messiah" and "A Piece of Blue Sky". Those two make for a pretty exhaustive, and well documented, coverage of the life of L. Ron Hubbard and the Church of Scientology. I'd have to look up who the authors were and other details like that. (Would anyone be interested in that information?)

Jeez. Just when I thought this thread ended so well...

Well, I said it before, and I'll say it again:
"A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on it's shoes."
-Mark Twain

I don't have speakers on my computer at work, so I'll have to view these all later.
Does anyone even want a rebuttal or are you all more interested in how wrong Scientology is than what the actual truth/missing context of these videos?

Wasn't there a study that came out recently about how people listened to salacious gossip more than actual data anyway?

mereth,

It obvious that people want to bash any form of religion or belief here. Any intellectual discussion will be peppered with attacks. It's just the environment. I say if you want to add to the discussion then go for it. :D We'll all read it and react our own way.

Haven't seen the videos yet either. the computer I do most of my surfing with does not at present have speakers connected.

But As I stated before. Everyone walks their own path. No one can walk it for you. Only you can decide what works for you.

Can someone please pose a specific question so I don't feel like I'm having to explain why the answer to the unverse and everything is 42 (comparitively speaking)?

I'm truly happy to answer/deny/discuss just about anything.

One: Be able to experience anything.

Two: Cause only those things which others are able to experience easily."

Okay... I'll ask a question.

Why is it okay to follow a man (meaning a mortal being)?

Why isn't better just to follow yourself (another mortal being)?

If one is to follow anybody, won't it be wise to follow some more important or more potent entity?

And why is it important to follow anybody?

We don't "follow" L. Ron Hubbard like he's a god or anything of the sort. He would probably find the idea ridiculous. He was a great man and we thank him and applaud him for his discoveries regarding the mind and spirit. He devoted his life to Dianetics and Scientology and the discoveries therein and that means gratitude of the best kind.

If, by follow, you mean:

definition 3b: to accept as authority : obey <followed> (from the Merriam-Websters online dictionary).

"In Scientology no one is asked to accept anything as belief or on faith. That which is true for you is what you have observed to be true. An individual discovers for himself that Scientology works by personally applying its principles and observing or experiencing results. "

- from the definition of Scientology.

Having said that:

"In the Scientology religion, man is held to consist of three parts—thetan, mind and body. The thetan is the spiritual being. The thetan is the individual. One is a thetan who has a mind and who occupies a body. As is explained more fully below, the thetan is that which animates the body and uses the mind.

"One of the most basic tenets of Scientology is that man is an immortal spiritual being whose experience extends well beyond a single lifetime and whose capabilities are unlimited, even if not presently realized.

"The term is taken from the Greek letter theta for thought or life or the spirit. It is used to avoid confusion with previous concepts of the soul."

Does that answer your question? :D

yea... kinda...

But why the change from soul to thetan? And where does this thetan come from originally? Who created it? If not created, the how did it arrive or come into being?

My answers below in red.
Donna Matrix wrote:yea... kinda...

"It is used to avoid confusion with previous concepts of the soul." There are adjectives and actions commonly assigned to the soul that are not, in fact just the soul by itself. That's the distinction.

And where does this thetan come from originally? Who created it? If not created, the how did it arrive or come into being?

I have my own theories about all of that, but they are my own theories, unclear and nebulous as would be expected with someone who thinks as critically as I do.

:)

I personally think that the overall point of Scientology is to bring you to a state of awareness where you can answer those questions for yourself.

From the FAQ on Scientology on their website:

"Does Scientology have a concept of God?

"Most definitely. Scientology affirms the existence of a Supreme Being, although its dogma is unique and does not include the worship of one. Scientology believes that only through total spiritual enlightenment can one then truly discover and understand the Supreme Being."

Okay, in what way were Operation Snow White http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Snow_White,

the Church's treatment of Paulette Cooper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulette_Cooper,

and current treatment of Keith Henson, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Henson and http://www.operatingthetan.com/,
the actions of a benevolent organization?

What we need now is a couple of Mormons in the mix.

To me, it would be no stranger than meeting someone who
actually believes in Jesus on the Playa.

>on a side note, I have seen Jesus each of 10 years on the Playa,
but this Jesus is 18 feet tall and falls over in strong winds.

Plenty of ex-mos though, they've done the temple, Planet Kolob (obscure Book or Mormon reference, God's from Kolob I think, yes, I'm an ex-mo but missed out on the seminary classes because we moved to Iran darn) and as a loose group, Behind the Zion Curtain. Many, many Utah-centric camps. As for active Mormons? Like I've said elsewhere, I'd have to ask around. I don't much think so, Burning Man doesn't fit with Living the Standard (Word of Wisdom).

BAS, Toolmaker, etc, etc.
I really have no idea what the truth is behind any of these or how much of what is purported to be true is technically false.
Much as a practicing Catholic in Kansas wouldn't know what the real deal is with a Vermont priest accused of molestation - I wasn't there and thus cannot form an opinion.

I said this earlier in this thread and I'll say it again:
"As far as pending litigation, I have no comment other than if they are truly guilty, then I agree that they should be sentenced. I have faith in a proper justice system. I however do not necessarily have faith in the judge or jury to be as impartial as would probably be needed. And therein lies the inherent flaw in any justice system."

Next question?

I wish I knew enough about Scientology to make some multiple choice questions.
It looks like it would be just as fun , if not more, than other religions to poke at.
