After some retrospective thought and reading what has been written, I do beleive that it was part of a big eleborate practical joke that I am the butt of. I didn't decide this from just this one incident either.

Well I hope all involved had a good laugh. Very funny stuff. Very funny stuff indeed.

It could be said that being the butt of a practical joke meant you were worth their time to do it. Compliment?

I used to work at a place that used canned ether to start diesel engines (back in the 60s). We had burn barrels to stand around to warm up, and all 'empty' ether cans were dropped in for public amusement, and generally when someone was walking up who didn't know what was going to happen. shrug - there's no common sense.

Personally, I think it's unfair to name a particular group, as you have. My suggestion is that if you see behavior that violates your personal concept of common sense, walk away and post an angry rant about it six months later. But don't name names.

I'm not the police. I don't control the behavior of people at Burning Man, and i don't control your behavior. So they get to throw anything in their fire they want to, and you get to post to eplaya months later complaining about their behavior. C'est la vie.
I couldn't let this lay.

Phil,

I would like to start by saying I truly do appreciate that you have the guts to show your face in your Avatar. If it is you. It shows that you believe what you say with conviction.

I will follow your lead on this (I will have my new Avatar up tonight), but I am not going to listen to your words though, because you are wrong. And I don’t want to hang out with you. So I will make sure that if I see you I will turn the other way.

Also you will want to stay out of the Lounge, because if I see you I know that you are looking for the wrong kind of fun. I am sure you will find it if you look hard enough, but I am telling you right now, you won’t enjoy the Lounge. And if you hold Phil’s beliefs then you will probably want to stay way as well.

Phil, I am not your babysitter.

PS Thank GOD your are not the police.

Snark! Snark! Snark! Harrumph!

Oh the ballet we perform that looked so silly in the past only to have them come back as fad.

Oh the shadows we cast for all to watch when we least expect it.

I think we've all tried to burn propane cans hoping that it'll yield a huge explosion. It doesn't

Fortunately some of us tried this in years when there weren't so many spectators. No big explosion. Next time I see a noob try this, I'll scream, "run for your lives!" - just for fun.

If all parties involved where cool, I don't have a problem, but I don't have to watch. And I really don't know anyone or hang out with people that think that is cool. I have no one I call a friend that is like that. Not one that I know of. And there is a reason for it. Because my freinds respect me and I respect them.

Example, that video with the "animals eating their own feces". I heard of it, but there is no way I am going to search for it or watch it. The guy that told me about it almost vomited as he did. I didn't let him finish. It is not my thing. (SHIVER UNCONTROABLY EVEN AT THE THOUGHT) Actually I don't want to even hear about that kind of stuff. So what I do, is not frequent those locations or posts. Easy.

I don't like it I leave, if I see something that looks wrong I ask or say something to someone I trust.

Little fish, you are allowed to like whomever you want, but that does not mean I do. Nor do I have to tolerate it if it is shoved in my face. My body my rights.

If he is a good cat then let him prove it to me, when he is in my camp respect my rules, but I am not going to just roll over because someone, I am sorry little fish, that I barely know tell me it is true.

I expect this attitude out of anyone that camps at the Lounge. And again I may be alone, but I am going to have fun. I have plenty of friends; I don't need any that are waiting for "things" to happen. I hang around people that make things happen. Good things happen. Scary explosive things, art things, song and dance things and of course the "THING".

You are assuming that the safety feature does indeed work. If it were to fail, or be disabled, it can get ugly. At least when I do something dumb, I do not endanger innocent bystanders.

The trick is to use them when they are close to empty, and place them in standing straight up,
It works about 1/2 the time.
Try to place the can into the fire in an area where the flames won't entirely surround the can (to get the pressure to go beyond the cans limits).
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

Burn baby burn

Post by studebaker hoch » Tue Jan 29, 2008 12:18 pm

I agree with the idea that anyone can throw anything in the fire. If the person is civilized and has good playa manners, they will yell out "FIRE IN THE HOLE" before lobbing that propane tank into the ember pit.

What part of "BURNING Man" don't people get?

This "hey let's all be polite and pass our communal food to the right" mentality is killing the event. Manners are like gun control - they only work when every single person is doing it. People don't actually have "manners" anymore. And that's not a bad thing!

I'd like to see a return to our roots where your entire camp could be blown up when you least expect it, when the man would be stuffed with "extra" fireworks by persons unknown, when we could shoot roman candles from our cars while driving at 60mph on the playa under a full moon, sitting outside the sunroof steering with our feet, on E.

The current ibcarnation of the event "COMPLY WITH RULES" isn't so much Burning Man as Disney Man.

Screw that. Yes, you can get *killed* here! If you aren't ready for that, please do us all a favor and stay home and watch Fox News.

Read the back of your ticket sometime, the people who wrote that disclaimer knew what they were talking about. Wear hearing protection. Never let turn your back on anyone carrying an ammo can.

And remember, fun first, safety LAST if it's even on the list.
One playa, many worlds

Phil is one of the few who has been consistently considerate and intelligent in his postings. don't dismiss him too quickly cuz you didn't like his message.

Now, I was wondering about something I was planning on doing for this years Burn. I know where i can get a hold of a small tactical nuclear warhead. (dont worry, its really, really, really small) I was wondering how far beyond the trash fence I should get before I set it off? I think it would be a little bigger than Crude Awakening. Has anyone dealt with nuclear devices before?

Thanks.

While it may be a little larger than Crude Awakening, the plans for Crude Two are on the table now. It should dwarf Crude One!

7. Death is all around us all the time. No reason to force the hand. "You can be killed" is just a retarded line.
22. Wasn't this question already answered.
7. I think Phil is a dick in my opinion. Just becuase he is polite does not make him cool. I get a don't leave your kids with him vibe. Sorry Phil but it is true
86. I am not going to tell you who threw the propane canister in. I know who it was.
-12. What part of Burning Man don't you get?
3.12. Blah blah blah.
B. Wee wee wee.
981. Poo poo poo
465. Pee pee pee
6. BORING SIDNEY! (That is my best Johnny Rotton from sid and Nancy)
69. You can't get the real stuff any more. There was a day when you walked into any grocey store and could buy cannon fuse and black powder, but those days are gone.
13. It was just a question.
23. I like Cheese not bait.

I hope this clears thing up for you.

Still wondering if anyone has any recommendations how far outside the trashfence my nuclear warhead should be to provide an awesome, but relatively safe, experience for all of us Burners

Teo, if this is a joke, please say so.
If not...
I have two immediate concerns:
fall-out and what that would comprise (if any) and
damage to the playa itself (what kind of a burn scar (if any) would be created?
Okay, so ten out of ten for style, but minus several million for good thinking, yeah?

its really small, it weighs under 25 lbs, so Im pretty sure its not gonna make a Hiroshima thing (remember the photos of those big hulking bombs?)

It was designed to be shot from artillery, so it cant make a big enuf bang to wipe out the guys shooting the cannon, so Im thinking maybe three miles outside the trash fence would be far enough to resolve any fall out concerns. Since it wont be inside BM boundaries I wont have to worry about a burn platform or anyhting like that. But man, this is gonna be awesome!

it is if ya dont get caught!

I guess to be safe, I should probably consult with a physics major and try to determine just how big the blast radius will be. Also, there may be a hefty shock wave that could topple a few art pieces.

But just imagine looking out across the deep playa and all of a sudden seeing a mushroom cloud ignite and billow into the night time sky. That would be awesome, I think.
