In an an earlier post I referenced the bible as an historical document stating that Moses wrote the first books. I too believ that he (or whoever actually wrote them) just set down the oral tradition. Which had been much garbled over time before being written.
I find it unlikely that Moses wrote about his own death, which occurs in the Pentetuch.

There you have the summation of the Old Testament from Jesus Himself.

I think Jesus was very clear that sexual sin was not the "biggest" sin one could commit. Being a hypocrite was and wanting what was not yours. And besides, the message was a personal one - "and why quibble about the speck in someone else's eye - his little fault - when a board is in your own?" The Bible is a personal book to be used on oneself - NOT ON OTHERS!

Jesus said, "It is the thought life that pollutes. For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts of lust, theft, murder, adultery, wanting what belongs to others, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, pride, and all other folly. All these vile things come from within; they are what pollute you and make you unfit for God."
a few comments in reaction:
- There's no denying that there are a few good ideas in the bible tossed in amongst all the rest. But do you really need a bible to tell you what should be obvious.... and what do you do with the rest of the package?
- As far as a personal book for yourself, I suspect much of the harsh reactions you're getting come from the fact that we've all been bashed over the head with a bible enough times that we've come to think otherwise. Also the bible itself extols the virtue of going out and converting the heathen - evangelizing.
- Given all the "vile things", bad acting that humanity is prone to, does the bible really provide the best roadmap out of our personal hells? It seems sadly wanting to me at best and at worst tends to push a lot of people into even worse states of self-loathing, shame, or in some cases full-on delusional states. (I think gods and devils is still one of the biggest hallucinations that the schizophrenic is prone to.)
- Finally in relation to roadmaps, the term "unfit for God" is a very dangerous concept. The bible is very clear at times that we can't exactly know the mind of god, but it sure does come up with a lot of strong suppositions of what god thinks about various issues.
Oh yeah, all that genocide. I wouldn't want that god even if he turned out to exist. But then I hate mind fuck.

I take it you're not planning on being a trial lawyer?
You start off with some strange assertions, and then launch into some real wierd conclusions. I can only picture the jurors stunned expressions...
(But then, I guess some of the best trial attorneys made their reputation on their ability to simply press people's buttons, rather than profound reasoning ability.)

Are you seriously implying that the US is some kind of bastion of world culture by virtue of christian influence since its inception? What do you know about the founding fathers? Do you think they were "good" christians? Ever wonder where all of those funny symbols on our money came from? Do you think those are christian symbols?
What do you know about all of the different multicultural threads that fed into what America has become? (Could some of them have even come from the "pagan" first Americans and their great eastern tribes?) Do you think christianity is the most important source of material? Or is it simply one of the loudest and most recent? (George W making admissions before the 1st election that he was going to jump on the christian bandwagon and milk it for all its worth.... and now Obama doing this southern preacher voice??? What the fuck!)

I don't take advantage of "christian culture". I generally do my best to subvert it. For example: I think excellent and simple ideas like "separation of church and state" are eagerly discarded by most christians. (And don't give me, the "well thats only the false christians" response. I've done my time in those christian enclaves. I know how they think and act.)
I see America as being, at its best, something beyond christianity. I hope with a slice of spirituality - purged of religion.

(And just to add a reminder at the end so you don't get the wrong idea.
I've had lots of christian friends that I liked and respected very much!! But I will always have the strong opinion that what made them likeable and respectable is the simple fact that they made the fundamental choice to be a little more conscious and more loving humans. Christianity was just part of the outer form. It was near at hand and suit their need. It could have been something else.)

Nailed it.

What everybody seems to want more than anything else is another person they can trust. Now... who is that person... who is that person that can be trusted to do what he / she says every time...

ah... that is the question.

If things keep going the way they are you will certainly get your wish...

BTW - I too disregard politicains wrapping themselves in pious bullshit.

I am not implying that the United States is today a Christian anything - far from it... Besides, the question pops up - Can a country be Christian? I think not since only people can be Christian. like duh.

I am stating that Christian thought has been and still is a strong undercurrent in our culture and has driven the direction we have gone. It is still a power force and that why it is USED by so many to seem upright and honest - when indeed they are nothing of the kind.

Look - the world has been messed up for a very long time. I don't think it will ever be fixed. We're all doomed.... doomed I say.... The end of world is near.... The sky is falling... the sky is falling... hold on to your hats.... kiss your asses goodbye...

Besides, we'll all going die anyway... so who cares?

I hired three lawyers (three different cases) - I lost, lost, lost.

I started law school. One year into it I fired my last lawyer.

I fought my own battles in court, the first two I resurrected from the dead, and after many appearances and many filing... I won, won, won.

So there.

I'll never have to hire a lawyer again. ha ha

Who developed math, physics, chemistry? Oh.. yea... Western Culture

Who developed medicine, sewer systems, electricity? Oh.. yea... Western Culture

Who developed roads, automobiles, planes? Oh... yea... Western Culture

And you say you don't use any of these... yet you are on the Internet... using electricity.... talking to me. You ride a horse to the store? Ever take a plane trip? Do you dig a hole in your backyard every time you take a shit? um.....

Yea... right.

More power to ya!!
I recently discovered that there are a surprising number of physicians who became attorneys after getting jerked around by the system and unmotivated attorneys. Interesting development.

You weren't referring to the "rapture" in that other post were you?

hypocrite =

1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, esp. a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.

2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, esp. one whose private life, opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

Donna your post timing for sleepy time was cool. 11:11 Sweet dreams.

But that still doesn't answer the questions you seem to love to dodge.

But at least we agree it is time for bed.

Until tomorrow then? If I can find the time for your tired antics. I have Lounge business to take care of.

Right BC. I miss-stated myself. What I meant was that caring about another person enough to want them to have what you know is good is showing love.

Taking it to their door and politely asking them if they would like to hear more (then politely leaving if they are not interested) is Proselytizing.

And that reminds me of a story my ex brother-in- law tells. He had just gotten out of the shower when there was a knock on the door. He was expecting his sister over and so cracked the door to see if it was her. It was three ladies from the the Jehova witnesses. Two older ones and a younger one. He politely listened to their opening spiel and then told them that he was not interested. One of the older ladies then said that their message was very important and that he really needed to hear it. He again told them that he was not interested and started to close the door. whereupon one of the older women stuck her foot in the door and insisted that he let them in to hear their message. So he again told them that he was not interested and that he had just gotten out of the shower and was naked. Well the old lady said that he was just being stubborn and that he really wanted to hear the message and he should let them in. this went on back and forth for several minutes with the lady not removing her foot from the door so he could close it. meanwhile, his sister did not show up to rescue him. finally he gave up, and throwing the door open invited them to come in. he said that the look on their faces was priceless. they beat a hasty retreat after which he was never bothered by jehova witnesses again. I have often wondered what the story was like when they told it at church.

Hey Box Burner, could you imagine if a group like that did infiltrate the playa.

Could you imagine if someone had the knowledge to build a car like the guy that made that air horn car, but instead of horns it screamed "HAVE YOU HEARD THE GOOD NEWS BIATCHASSES!"

And then drove that around BRC at sun up to let everyone know they have no clue?

THAT WOULD SUCK BALLS!!!!!! (and not in a good way either.)
