Institutionalization of Burningman

Post by blyslv » Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:33 pm

Can you give examples of how Burningman has become institutionalized?

The nomenclature that has sprung up is one example: "virgins" "burners" "spinners" "MOOP" "gift" (as a verb!).

Then there is the thought of temple building people reserving the same space year after year. And of course that thing in the center, it's always the same blue man! We all know that there will be a Center Camp Cafe, that roads will be laid out in a circle.

On the MOOP the BMOrg gives out at the Gate, they will ask you not to produce MOOP. The Earth Guardians will scowl and "gift" you a lecture on How To Do It Better. The porta-potties? You know what you have to look forward to there! There's already the interminable screed from the Founding Visionary and his well supported grantees.

These are the Burningman Traditions; the Things That Don't Change, the smooth groove worn into the balustrade by the passing hand of Time.

Got any more?

Complaints about Burning Man appear to suffer from at least as much institutionalization.

trully free radicals being the other end of the spectrum...
an atom or molecule that bears an unpaired electron and is extremely reactive, capable of engaging in rapid chain reactions that destabilize other molecules and generate many more free radicals

Moop given out at Gate: I leave it in the glove box of my car throughout the week, then have some nice little reminders of Burning Man the rest of the year. And, I hate to say it, but the What Where When this year did me as much good in the glove box as it would have in my hands.

As one of the things Minnesotans do to pretend we enjoy winter is an art event based on an Ice house concept ( the shack one sits in to fish threw a hole in the ice). while announcing the Art shanty event on TV News it was referred to as being kind of like Burning Man on Ice.

News flash! The circle pattern has been modified with the additional plazas and the man is not always blue...perhaps someone needs to visit the optometrist or if nothing else take a look back at the pix on the main BM site.

Blyslv, you're STILL whining about the moop at the gate stuff? Good grief, get over it or get more involved and do something about it.

It isn't moop until YOU throw it on the ground or otherwise fail to see that it goes to its proper final resting place. If you don't want it, don't take it.

blyslv, all I can say for sure is that those assholes over at Barbie Death Camp never do anything different, same old same old every year. Boring. No imagination. If you ask me, those pricks should be institutionalized. Or ran right off the playa.

Careful, you're starting to make sense. ;)

"Institutionalized" conjures up gay memories of green walls in sterile hallways, padded cells, the beloved nursed Ratchet and that room down the hall where the screams come from.

I prefer the term codification. After a number of yearly repetitions, the experimentation stops and That Which Works becomes the norm. You don't have to look anymore, you know what will be there.

He's been out for something like three weeks now.
I think something angered him over in the Donna Matrix Bible Quiz thread.
