BBQing Frozen Pizza

Post by BitterDan » Wed Jan 23, 2008 4:35 pm

One night at Moonshine Tavern this year we cooked frozen pizza on the BBQ and I thought I'd pass along how to pull it off. If you are lucky enough to have access to a freezer (either on grid or in an RV) then you are in a for a treat because it's not delivery, it's fucking grilled pizza!

There are a couple of ways to do this method: Heat grill up to normal operating temperature (if you have a thermometer then try to get it around 400 degrees F). Lay down a section of tin foil and place pizza directly on foil. Close lid and check it in 15-20 minutes. You might have to leave it on longer than you expect.

The other method is to actually wrap the entire pizza in tin foil and let it defrost before cooking. Close the lid and use the same approx cooking times as above and, presto, an awesome Italian meal with hardly any effort.

EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing. If the crust isn't crispy enough for you, put it back on the grill for a few minutes but remove the tin foil. That'll crisp her right up.

Hey Bitter Dan of Moonshine Tavern! Your camp was the very first theme camp (other than my own) I ever visited. It was the first Sunday night of 2005. My taste buds committed suicide, my brain cells had a massive die-off, but I got the shot glass! I've been back to the Tavern every year since. My favorite camp!

Im originally from Tennesse where shine is still made, though the numbers of makers is rapidly disappearing.

Anyhoo! Thanks for the great camp!

Hey Teo,

Don't thank me, thank Synergy. It's his idea/bar, we just work there. Our camp (Camp FuckIt) is kind of like a satellite Moonshine Tavern (and the secret getaway for shiners who are sick of the plaza). In 06' & 07' we were at 7:15 and Desert but, if I'm not mistaken, this year we are actually going to stay at the tavern instead of in the neighborhood. Either way you can usually find me at the tavern. I bartend whenever I get the chance since that is where I meet the most people at BM.

I'll pass along your compliments to Synergy, I'm sure he'd be glad to hear it.

A pizza makes a great taco shell!

Aaaaaannnd 05, and 04 (althought I think 04 we were closer to 8....). :p

Teo, that's pretty funny, 05 is when I first discovered the tavern as well. that's the year they were down a 7:20 and D, right? They were right down the street from us, which was great, as the stumble back home was rather short. lol

Gotta love that shine!

Pizza on the grill! Why didn't I think of that? Sounds great.

There are a couple propane powered toaster ovens on
the market. Let the pizza thaw first for best results.

Saw a gasoline powered blender at the thrift store last week....
It's not because I'm old. Your music actually does suck.

Dato:

when I stumbled on the Tavern in '05 it was real early in the week, it was pitch dark, and I was driving a little "uninsured" on my bike with some friends, So I cant remember where it was located, it all was such a glorious blur.

That people did stuff like this that was so f'ing cool and original. El-wire sign over the door, dont think it was a double-wide tent then, but not sure.

I remember thinking, cool shot glass. How hard could it be to knock back some booze? Gawd dam, that had to be the strongest stuff i ever spilled down my gullet! (Cant remember if it was the corn mash variety or the molasses based stuff.) One chick in our group, however, just cranked it back like an old pro, lit up a Marlborough and rode on like it was sugar water, but then fell off her bike 10 minutes later. Good times!

Last two yerars seems it has held down an area around 9:00 plaza deservedly near the Medic station!

haha! Yup, sounds like the tavern. It was indeed a single carport then, and I believe that was the last year the moonshine came in different "flavored" (or, however flavored fire can be) variaties. Oh, and that was the year the shotfglasses were doubleshots! haha. Trouble.

'06 the location was not so good, it was down at 2:40ish and C, AKA, out in bumfuck nowhere. Last year, it was indeed on the 9 oclock plaza, right in front of the med tent. I think there were at least 2 people at day that got carried over there! Oh, good times! haha.

We're looking to combine camps and do it up bigger this year. Move all the personal camp stuff and cars across the street and expand the coolness of the camp. The bar will remain about the same, but my dome will go next to it, and will be used as a night-club with a house band, and (hopefully) at least one live band a night. Hopefully som off the wall funk.

fuck, I can't wait.

I came up with the idea to try this my last camping trip at a local event "Southern Junktion Festival". I used a frozen pizza that came with some kind of composite/reflective board that went underneath the pizza(don't remember the make). Covered in foil I cooked them on an open bed of coals, on one of those flip out grid iron tables that you stick over a fire. My camp mates loved them. They came out perfect, crispy crust with all the cheese melted. Going to try this out on the playa this year with a propane grill.

Grill marks on food always make it look better.

I agree.
The best part of any type of meat that you grill
is the part that got a little blackened from contact.
I won't eat salmon any other way.
I bet a take-and-bake pizza would work really good too.
We have an obligation to make space for everyone, we have no obligation to make that space pleasant.

One eye -
Dude I am back and tomorrows Wednesday - if your crossing the bridge call me. also DICK - I agree with you that a take and bake pizza would rock, I fear it wouldnt keep unless refrigerated though. Me thinks it would dry up, or go stale unless you BBQ'd it day 1 or 2.

later
