Movies that Remind You of Burningman
some flix that remind me of BM
Second you all on the Fear & Loathing reference
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Death Race 2000
Anything by Terry Gilliam or Junet
BTW - netflix rules. I really love the service! I don't have cable, so all I do is watch movies, a perfect fix for my addiction.
>"Point break" reminds me a lot of burning man because of it's rough chaotic, primitive feel.
Man, I hope this was a joke. Chaotic? Primitive? I think the only thing primitive in that flick was Keanu's "acting"
whoa... I know kung fu...

ok I wnet and rented "Out/Deadly Drfiter" I musta been smoking the wrong kind of crack cuz I thought it sucked eggs.
I really like Peter Coyote but good lord, this was lika bad high school drama improv. it was like a Kuchar film without the humor, sex, irony and indie cheese factor. For the first time in forever, I actually turned a movie off before it was over.
But points for the following exchange, the only true Burning Man moment as far as I could tell:
Danny Glover: Who are you?
Peter Coyote: I'm me.
Danny Glover: You used to be you. Now you're IT. That's why you're here.
Good lord let's hope that Greaser's Palace fares better..stay tuned...

cherry 2000. really.
it takes a while to set up, but when you hit the sky ranch sequence, you should be feeling home (even if you identify more with the bad guys).
extra bonus for actual lake lahontan footage, with trego mountain in the back ground.

Brewster McCloud
That was one fucked up movie. The alienation was on target, and the scars were primo.
I'm not sure of the circus scene being like BM though. Nor the bird shit. But the ending would be WAY cool out on-playa.
If you want a really agro-sticky fun time, see Crash. Geez, nice injury ya got there Homer. Can I lick it?
I'm STILL looking for a copy of Miracle Mile, but that's just fucked up wrong, and not much to do with BM.
Really Bad Things happen though when a non-community minded idea is formed on a bad drug cocktail mix.

I'll be in my blanket fort until further notice.
...Lorgasm mentioned this earlier- The desert landing scene in "Mars Attacks"- I was cleaning the house and watching this the other day, and chanced to look up and doubletake at a playascape with a crowd of people, scaffolding and "strange equipment"....spittin' image...not sure if they ACTUALLY filmed in Pahrump, as the movie claims.....

Has anyone seen this? (not a huge fan of the burning man documentary, but this looks like it might be promising).
opinions?

No one's seen it yet because it is still being edited, actually. There are two trailers on the film's site, and a preview treatment will be screening at the Angelika in NYC when "Confessions of a Burning Man" opens there on February 27. We expect the film to be edited (first round) in March or April. I have a lot of faith that this will be a truly stellar film. This team had our full support and spent over year following the event and getting interviews and generally busting ass to make this documentary. Plus, they are one heck of a nice crew of people. Texans, dammit, and right friendly ones, at that. I swear they spent as much time helping us clean up Media Mecca as they did shooting their movie. Poke around their website - some nice photos and a journal of the production's progress.

The Big Empty with John Favreau has many playa scenes.
This 2003 movie was too weird to go to theaters for a national release but now on video it is the most recent film that reminds me of Burning Man. It is about an out of work actor who is a courier and has to deliver a suitcase out to the desert. There he meets some very strange characters played by Daryl Hannah, Bud Cort, Sean Bean, Kelsey Grammer, and many others and gets involved in a mystery that may be connected with UFOs, a serial killer or both. The last third of the movie takes place on a giant playa and the scenes at night on the playa look amazing and really remind me of Burning Man at night. Oh the movie also uses an RV in the playa scenes as one of the main props towards the end. Very BurningManesque. I like to think of it as Lawrence of Arabia meets Repo Man.

I thought "Gifting It" was the best movie about Burning Man I've seen. Some of the others tend to get a little pretentious (granted I haven't by any means seen them all).
Cheers to the "A Boy and His Dog" reference earlier. Love that shit. But the copy I rented was widescreen...but not "anamorphic" widescreen. Basically the widescreen was compressed to standard format, and Don Johnson was, to scale, about eleven feet tall. Really irritating. As long as we're on Harlan Ellison, how about "City on the Edge of Forever?" (please don't bludgeon me for the Star Trek reference!)

“We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered.”
Well, The Guardian would be a pretty cool project....set up some stock footage film loops and project them into the middle, onto dry ice fog perhaps, so you could still jump through it as in the episode......coupla fake boulders strewn around for scenery.....You could even conceal a PA and deep-voiced vocal talent in the Guardian setpiece so it could give the "a question....." spiel.........
Oh shit, I blew my cover! (struggling to conceal handmade starfleet insignia and rubber ears)

I agree with you tottely about most of these flicks. But I thought of an album that fits Burning Man. It's by Floater and it's called "Burning Sosobra" I am convinced that the band has been to Burns.

feah n' loavin', road movies
surprised nobody's said Fear and Loathing ... (or have they?)
if nothing else the trip is part of the experience so let's see:
-Highway 61 (obscure, Canadian, great road flick)
-parts of some movies remind me of the playa, like The Road Warrior for sure, Star Wars/Trek bar scenes and maybe Dune? Rumble Fish and Night on Earth (in a weird way)
-books: The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho; Where the Wild Things Are (!!!). and well, since this is the new eplaya, I can direct y'all to a short-short story I wrote, set at BMan but fictional (my writing's improved since but it's fun & short, or so most Burners have said.). Just click on my WWW!
more later mebbe, but I always seem to kill threads so pls holla if ya can, keep it alive!
PS -- "El Viaje Misterioso" anyone? (Simpsons episode) -- Homer eats Quetzaltenango hot peppers in his chili, trips out in the desert with Johnny Cash the Red Spirit Coyote ... that reminds me of BMan more than the BMan reference I heard in another episode)
btw I haven't actually watched TV in a long time, just have a good memory
