Where are those meddling kids when you need them!

Post by erri2000 » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:40 pm

Hey art fans dig this. I was given this toilet paper butler as a gag gift (I was going to bring it to the 2008 burn and put it in one of the J-Johns) when a mural I painted fell on it when I was redecorating. (Pictures Below)

This is what I know.
The item was purchased at Bombay Company
The Butler is ceramic
The "triptych" is porcelain
There are thirteen pieces in total
Seven pie cut pieces
Two lids
One angel
Two side panels
The panels have light houses and the number 12
On the last photo in the set, there is a drop of blood on the outside and a fingernail and some finger skin that appears to be from the person that packed the piece.

I have the piece lock in a safety deposited box.

I believe it is an "Angel of light" representation. Guiding souls safely to Heaven and all.

Any thoughts?

I ran some over my gums but only cut myself.

I have contacted several government agencies, but I keep getting the same answer when they answer, "Just hold on to it." and "What do you think we should do about it?"

Went from
University Art Department - no reply
Department of Justice - sent to
Homeland Security - sent to
TSA no reply.

The funniest thing is that there was a huge art raid of art galleries last Thursday in CA that got busted for selling smuggled works of art.

Looks like the manufacturer takes defective casts and throws them back into the wet plaster to pour into new castings. This makes a lot of sense since they probably get a lot of bubbles and have to discard the pieces. Having solid bits in a plaster casting might slightly lower its structural integrity but for silly little things like that it shouldn't make much difference.

I wouldn't worry about the safe deposit box. It all looks like cheap plaster castings of the same material your little toilet man was made from.

Questions?

Why would a company that is shipping product weigh the product down? Wouldn't that cost more?

Why would a company throw a more expensive item into an "cheap" item?

Why wouldn't the company just have a "Blow-out sale" or sell the piece as a factory second?

Also the piece inside the butler is VERY OLD. And I can almost swear that I saw it in the past when I lived in my grandfathers funeral home.

The "Butler" is made with a mold that spins, much like how chocolate companies make "Hollow Bunnies"

This is fine porcelain. No bubbles.

I am going to bring it to a kiln and fire off the ceramic. If it is a cheap piece of plastic it will melt, if not the ceramic will melt and leave the porcelain.

That added 10% weight at most to the completed shipping weight? I'm guessing less but hard to tell based on the information I have. They probably have a shipping company and the space the boxes take is probably more of a factor since I'm sure they could fill a shipping container without over weighing it. If you think about the cost of material this would save them plus the cost of disposing with broken or defective items, in most cases it would be a clear win.
Why would a company throw a more expensive item into an "cheap" item?
From the pictures those do not look expensive. The clearest picture is of the lighthouse and it looks like cheap trinkets you can buy at any home good store. I used to decorate for a hospital and I've put up a lot of junk that looked very much like that. Again, you get a better look at the items than I do but they look like broken junk to me.
Why wouldn't the company just have a "Blow-out sale" or sell the piece as a factory second?
I see parts that look broken to the point of uselessness. Also those would be considered decorative items. I don't think there is a market for ugly, deformed or broken things to decorate with.

Are you certain they are old? I can't tell that by the pictures.

It's not unlikely they use pour molds in the same facility which is what the others look like.

It would be cool if it's something special, but it looks like broken leftovers to me. Perhaps you can tell more than I can by having them in hand.

The piece was not broken until I tried to remove it.

It is a full set. The boxes stack to make a "Stairway to heaven"

I have searched Google and the rest and have not been able to find anything like it. Nor do I remember it from any of my art history books.

What ever the case a good mystery is always fun.

Hey Erri2000 are you a complete moron? (I say that with all respect, because you are a moron. Gotta be cruel to be kind.)

Why not just put it up on some auction house and let some sucker pick it up for the highest bid?

I thought this was so obvious that it goes without saying. It was my belief that Erri was only pretending to be so imbecilic as to not see this.

Guess I was wrong.

Why are you wasting your time with this, just throw the thing away.

And on a completely unrelated note, when does the city pick up your trash?
