Flight from Reno Sun 16.52... can I make it?

Post by giacinto » Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:04 am

All,

I have booked my flight back from Reno on Sunday at 16.52 but of course I don't want to miss the burning on Saturday night. I have no idea of how long it takes to travel from Black Rock City and I will have no vehicle of my own, so I will need to find as seat on somebody else's vehicle. Do you think it's safe enough? I know it would be ideal to stay a day longer (I heard about some kind of temple burning), but I'm a bit streched with holidays.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions,

Giac

you'll be fine to make that flight. just leave early early sunday morning (prob. before 8) to account for traffic lines.

If you leave on sunday morning you can predict that your drive time to Reno will be ~5 hours.

Thank you very much for your replies... regarding the congestion, I guess that leaving on Monday wouldn't be much better from that point of view, correct?

Leaving Monday would be worse, in general.

If you could stay for the temple burn youd appreciate it. Much different tone than the man burn. 2007's group wave was a first for me as well.

Don't worry about that. Mr. Harvey has gladly agreed to let us burn his RV in place of the temple.

An RV is a terrible thing to waste.

I didn't even know a flight could be booked this many months in advance.
It's going to be alright.

Under the circumstances given in the post, it would hardly be a waste. :->

Don't panic.

Just make sure you are packed BEFORE the man burns and leave at 4am on Sunday morning. You'll be fine.

Thank you for your reply, Dan. My main concern is that I will not have my own vehicle... how likely is it that I can find a ride (agreed in advance, of course) for such an early time? What you all said about the exhodus should be a bit reassuring in that sense, I guess.

That's something you would have to work out with your rideshare.

Since you're sharing a ride, I'd try for one that plans to leave right after the Burn. I think that would be more likely than finding one who plans to leave at 4am.

That's a great suggestion, I will investigate the possibility on the ride share closer to the time... thank you very much!

For many years I've left around 10 am on Sunday and have found that to get off the playa it took me about 2.5 - 3 hours.

Then add in about another 2.5 hours to Reno.

Plus the hour you need before the plane leaves... you're looking at least 6 hours.

Yeah I figure in 6 hours from campsite to Reno even though it's only 100 miles away.

I just got my airline tickets! Have to leave on Friday for a wedding. At least I'll miss the traffic.

A few years ago I had to leave on a Thur and almost got creamed by an RV passing someone heading to BM.

I slammed on my breaks and had to pull off the road to avoid a head on. I was so freaked, I was shaking from the adrenaline. Ended up driving 45 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Then a cop pulled behind me for 20 minutes until I was behind a little old lady who was doing 40. After another 10 minutes the cop passed us both. I saw him on the side of the road about 50 miles later... I was doing about 50 mph by then.

Ahhhh good times.
