Major Changes in Art Car Policy....Eek!

Post by QueenOfTheBeans » Mon Feb 11, 2008 5:18 pm

The following e-mail has been making the rounds and I just got it today. I'm pretty shocked about some of the changes they are planning to make in regards to art cars. I do understand that having too many cars zipping around the dark desert has a lot of potential problems, and only gets more dangerous the more people are there. But having "highways" just for cars seems like way too much control and infrastructure. Can anybody think of any other solutions? I'd hate to see this actually happen...

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just finished talking to AG at Burning Man HQ and she let me know about a
significant change planned for the event this year. It stems from a bunch of related circumstances.

Since last year the sheriff’s department has been putting pressure on the
BMorg to further control the art cars. Accidents between mutant vehicles and
pedestrians/cyclists have been on the increase. A death a few years ago
prompted a review, but a serious injury last year is driving the policy
change. There will now be a series of designated roads the art cars are
allowed to travel on. No more driving randomly across the playa. They felt
this would raise awareness of both the drivers and pedestrians crossing what will be
fairly well marked roads. The BMorg wasn’t thrilled about this but so far hadn’t
been able to find another solution satisfactory to the police.

At the same time almost a dozen theme camps and art projects have requested
varying degrees of car activity related to their projects. They have been making the point
that the “American Dreamâ€

I question the accuracy of the above statement "making the rounds". While it might be true, during the build of Crude Awakening we were asked to drive various and assorted routes to get from our Village to the site and back. The reason being was with the vast number of trips we had to make the BLM did not wish to see tire tracks in the Playa that might become semi permanent. I will follow up and report back. The part about charging a license fee sent up a red flag as well. This would also create possible situations for Mutant Vehicles with flame effects. I call BS. (but I have been wrong before and I am certain I will be wrong again)

driver’s licenses with a sticker that must be displayed on the windshield.

What if you don’t have a windshield?

Until all of that info is released from an official source or is validated by our resident rangers or a Senior Staff member, I wouldn't buy into it.

And even though the intentions are good, this adds more complexity to an event that's apparently having trouble keeping good volunteers as is...adding to the workload won't make things any better.

:P :P :P Heh. Very good spoof making the rounds :P :P :P

Mr. Moist Pup, are you the one stirring up the masses again?

In actuality the thing that is being looked at is requiring all mutant vehicles to exhibit a flame effect of some sort in order to get their night permit...and there must be naked dancers in order to get their day permit (dancers are allowed to wear enough to keep warm at night but must still be exotic or erotic, preferably both)

I would think so...and I hope so all the same.
That would leave the largest footprint...a track of sorts, deeply embedded into the skin of the mother playa!

that would be bad.

next thing you know, we'll only be allowed hover crafts!

...there's already tracks embedded into the surface like we see on google earth.

..it's another change. we've done it the other way for years.

It'll still be the best party.
We'll all still get butterflies and goosebumps the closer we get.

remember the former years when there were less than 30,000 residents?

I think having a drive-thru window at center camp for coffee would be a great idea except that
you can't drive your artcar into center camp and ..oh yeah....I don't like coffee.
Oops...scratch that ....ahh...nevermind.

I heard there was gonna be a wooden 200 foot tower to climb up. It's a V.I.P. nightclub with a dress code. Apparently you have to be wearing a faux fur glowing jacket to get in. No hats are allowed due to gang related problems in past years. But it's supposed to be really cool once you get in. Free drinks and everything... even ice cubes and a bacon buffet from 6-9 Monday-Thursday. Girls get in free, and there's a firepole to slide all the way down when you want to leave.
