It takes some real gearheads to build some of the mutant vehicles and kinetic art projects that we do. I'm certainly one of 'em.
That makes me think some more of you have hot rods, musclecars, and classics at home. So, please post pictures, and tell about them, even if you used to have 'em, or are still building them.

I have a few, but my favorite is this, a '55 Bel Air that I've had for 20 years. It's mostly stock except for the 383 small-block with dual quads, four-speed, and lowering. It's had two paint jobs, three engines, three transmissions, and three rearends in the time I've had it.

A freind in high school likked old Chevy's and was given a 57 nomad that did not run. He worked on it for 6 months and when he was done it did run... but only in reverse.

He was just crazy enough to drive it around that way too. I don't remember if he ever fixed it Because he got a 56 Bel Air the next year which did run in both directions and was what he drove until he got married.

Thank you CG for the thread. I confess to having the gearhead addiction and spend way too much time, love, and $ on my rides. Since what we like are old british cars, they tend run sporadically. I'll find some photos to post later. My hubby and I belong to several car clubs and most enjoy the top-down kind of cruising that only an old rag top can give you.

(I rebuilt the carbs for my Jag e-type on my kitchen table)

My husband decided to try to rebuild the trans in a Triumph TR6 - when finished, we had 4 speeds in reverse and 1 forward.

and, big multi fuel trucks.

Well if it's old diesel trucks you like... here's a pic of my big ride, an old Peterbilt 359. It gets polished as much as it gets driven, 'cuz I'm a gearhead freak! I've always considered the Pete long-hood 359 "the Harley Davidson of trucks". It has a Caterpillar and it flies!! It'd be a great way to haul stuff to BM, but I'd NEVER subject it to that corrosive playa dust!

Nice.... I had a 56 nomad wagon it was never that nice.
I still have two 65 mustangs and a 57 ford truck.

Looking I know I have some of the mustangs.
none of the nomad I was in high school (what a dummy I was) had a 327 4 speed primer gray no bumpers black diamond tuck seats.

It's been a dream of mine ever since the 04 burn to drive a flat black 18 wheeler +48 with red head lights to the burn. No muffled jake and with a city(fire truck)air horn. Now to get that CDL. Farm endorsement just isn't enough.
My favorite fire truck is our second out and it is a cat power 10 speed. I really like that truck. When it counts I can make that thing fly.

Now back to regular and appreciated gear head talk.

My trucks are M35 multifuel military cargo trucks, one with a 40' crane.

I have the first california custom done to an 1984 aero body Thunderbird.
One off front and rear caps done by Fat Jack's.
Rear suspension moved forward, all rod-ended, watts links, track arms, weight jacked, modified 9 inch LSD.
Modified front end, shifted forward, stroked 408 fi 500/500 shifted back.
5 speed, Turbo hood and interior.
Custom blue monochrome paint.
Car has a hitch and has always towed a trailer to the track.
This TBird inspired a radical version done by Fat Jack's with
custom sheet metal (not fibreglas) everywhere but the roof.
Ultra wide body for wider tires, tube frame, etc, etc, full supercar.
About a quarter million went into that car.
And it's never been shown anywhere.
That happens more often than not.

I have a mid-engined Manta chevy V8 built in california, McLaren Canam replica.
Authentic Lola Canam snorkel mounted, probably worth more than the car.
Currently up for sale.

I recently sold one of many Fiat Spiders I've had to buy my ticket this year.
About to sell a Fiat Wagon that is identical to the Lada Wagons you see in russia, except in the usa only
they came with the twincam hemi sports car engine.
Getting quite rare now.

I have a Lancia Zagato I'm trying to decide what to do with now.

I don't have any of these photos in digital format yet.
Still learning how to use all this stuff.
At one point the most powerful computer I had was the one running my fuel injection.

I'm not the only one on the playa interested in cars.
I know at least two burners with Lotus Elises.
There's a lot more out there.

Steve and Juicy have a fifties car and trailer combo and they actually brought them both out to the playa.
Now they are real car folks!
I have pictures.
I can't get those online now either.

I took photos of a custom Vanogon out there with a double middle.
How many bring the special cars out?
I've seen a few.

The guy who owns Lane Motor Museum in Nashville has a yellow Gremlin X with the big 360 and 4 speed it came with stock.
It's still a daily driver for him.
I highly recommend his museum, even for non-car people.
Tatras, Messerschmitts, Aeromobiles, many unusual cars, even one off streamliners.

They have a military transporter so large it won't fit in the building.
Hell, they had to shut down a lot of streets to get it there.
It almost didn't get into the parking lot.

For serious car folks, there is a b and b called Toad Hall on the Cape with a garage full of cars painted red with cats lounging all over them.
And Collier Racing Museum in Naples has some incredible race cars including a 1912 car with an aluminum overhead cam supercharged
engine capable of amazing speed, a 917 Le Mans car and a Porsche Canam car with the turbocharged 12 cylinder that started all the Turbo nonsense.
I think it has done 1400 horsepower in the 70s.

Many years ago I picked up a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle. I was in the market for another Mustang as mine had just been totaled by a friend and I had the insurance money. There was a Shelby GT350 for sale in San Jose. I went, I saw and I bought. At the time I was unaware that it was the very first 1966 GT350 made. The serial number was SFM6S001. I realized after a few years that this car would be worth something in the future. That was 1971. Jump ahead to the year 2000. My business allowed me the time and resources to finish the restoration (actually I repair and restore Mustangs for a living). Along with the assistance of a company in Green Bay, we did a 100 point restoration. I entered many car shows but looking at these cars is not my first love. They are meant to be used. I have another GT350 that I race. In 2004 6S001 went to the auction in Scottsdale where it brought a record amount. While I miss it, it really was a trailer queen and I still enjoy racing my other 350. Below is a link to some pics from the car show at the Chicago Historics. It placed first in class and best of show.

the Bike had 915 miles on it..I was t-boned at 50 mph and flew 60 feet onto my head where I ground a flat spot on the top of my helmet.

While I agree with DustDevil that cars ought to see at least some action, I would NEVER recommend anyone bring a cool old car that they give half a shit about to the fucking playa! Playa dust is corrosive as hell. Every truck I've brought to the playa shows it. I brought my nice truck last year, never again!

That's why I wanted to see pictures of burner's cool iron... you sure as hell wouldn't wanna take 'em to BRC.
