Temple of Community

Post by mars » Tue Feb 05, 2008 10:45 am

I am posting this announcement from Gothalot and the Temple of Community.

Welcome community. I hope with your help to within 6 months to pull off a temple. This is not an attempt to emulate any of the previous temples but merely to fill the void. Last year, The Rue Morgue, located at the 9 o'clock plaza, provided a sanctuary and a vehicle (hearse) to allow people to grieve, contemplate and say their goodbyes to departed. We taught many people to fold paper cranes (in honor of departed loved ones) and then placed the cranes into art pieces emulating coffins.

With no Temple burn planned for this year, we felt the need to fill the void while at the same time enlisting the community to take action and take part in their own Temple.

We have begun the discussions and the planning. We invite all interested parties to join in. We need builders, engineers, and excited people to scream out loud that it's happening!

Who wants a Temple at the Burn this year?!!!!!!

The "Temple Crew" announced that it would not be building a temple.

But they asked that "their" space be reserved.

Fuck that. If you're going to build something then fine, reserve the space. Otherwise open it up to all or to another group who can build something there. Who in the fuck do they think they are to ask for the space to be reserved...just in case they decide to do something last minute? Art cars and theme camps don't get last minute approvals or reserved space just in case they decide to come...the temple crew should be no different.

The only sacred cows on the playa should be the man, center camp, and any infrastructure required for permit compliance. Next thing you know placements will turn into entitlements and the whole event will go down the fucking tubes.

Im all for a Temple in 2008 and if the Community were to come together to build it, that would be even more special, in my humble opinion. BUT, the Temple should be located where the Temples always are located--at 12:00 high.

I don't know if there is any "official" printed info, but read this thread, and glean the info for yourself:

From what I understand, I think that they don't want another temple in that space because it will be assumed that it is theirs. I don't think they are sying not to put anything in that space.

I don't necessarily agree with this line of thinking, I'm just sayin' what I think they're sayin'.

(I need to figger out how to do this quote thing again--i forgot!)

We want to participate on this project. Tell us how.

Post by minina » Fri Feb 15, 2008 3:14 pm

So I went to http://tribes.tribe.net/templeofcommunity and I loved the ideas and pictures for the next temple, the Temple of Community. Me and my husband are willing to participate on this project. We are very handy and well, he's been working in construction for at least 15 years already. Where, when, how can we participate? We live in Miami but just tell us how to participate and we will. Do you need us to help installing the project? Have you open any account with paypal to donate? Please give us more info.

Oh! and by the way, if someone wants to watch the video where David Best talks about his Temple of Forgiveness being his last temple, here it is:

http://current.com/items/87265491_the_last_temple

(Very moving, in my opinion) So beautiful...

He said he hopes the community takes over, well...we will. Thanks David Best for giving the community of BM so much for so long...

I am willing to help out both on and off the playa.

I was thinking about the temple the other day and I think an Americana victorian chapel would be sweet! Just my opinion though.

Mars: Thanks so much. I will contact one of them.

Simon of de la Playa: Spirituality can be related to Religion but not necessarily. The temple at BM has never been a religious place. Orthodox? Christian? r u insane? you would be limiting yourself and others at BM community.

The temple word doesn't equal religion. It equals whatever you believe, it equals openness and a connection, a place to pause and reflect...not that you can't do that anywhere else but it has always been a magical place and a sacred place to a lot of people at BM.

Oh, I'm not offended, just, um, let's see. After a while too much of the same old same old gets under my skin. A little dab will do ya, less is more, insert your tired old cliche here.

I would hope anyone who truly was offended would have the good sense to say so; here or in a PM to the other person.

Pick on whomever you please, but give me a break and don't pick on them in all the threads all the time.

Here, pick on science fiction fanfic writers who think their view of the fictional universe is the only correct one. "That's not canon." You twat, it's fiction! Television fiction at that! How can an alternative universe be canon??!!

Oh, sorry faded out for a moment there. Please, resume your abnormal thread activity.

You don't have to be religious to be spiritual,
and you shouldn't be sarcastic about either one.

Shouldn't be sarcastic? Really? I disagree, freedom of speech and all that fun stuff.

If that's your set of values, then by all means embrace it, but telling someone they shouldn't be sarcastic amounts to telling someone what they should believe, in my book.

But we've hijacked the temple thread.

Ah, the gimme a break wasn't about the content, it was about the same thing over and over again in thread after thread. It could have been any "same damn thing" over and over again and I would have been annoyed. I HAVE to read all the posts. They get old, fast. I wasn't moderating, I was bitching. If there's ever any doubt, do feel free to ask.

Besides, don't be sarcastic on eplaya? That's pretty funny.

And I'm still not offended. I'm good.

Thanks. It's not a job, it's an adventure! No, most of the time this is simple and fun, and even the commerce isn't that bad. Overall, the community does a good job of getting back on track; I do hope if anyone IS offended they speak up. Not to me, mind you, but work it out with the other eplayans. Most of the time, that's possible. You're all some sort of intelligent, rational adult with a grasp of reasoning skills and diplomacy. No, seriously. I'm that gullible.

Now and then though, the job gets boring and annoying. Anti M is no fun when bored and annoyed.

And we've still hijacked the temple thread. Although I think eplaya could be considered a temple of community itself, in a vague, broad interpretation.
