I am assuming your speaking of HS? as an exchange student youll have a lot of latitude. Tell the school that you will be a week late for personal reasons. Or not - I wouldn't even worry about it. Nothing gets done the first week of school anyways.

I am wondering what your host family thinks of this idea that may be a bigger problem?

Tell your host family that you received an engraved invitation, that it would be RUDE not to go. It's for serious artists only and all participants are drug tested daily.

I assume college starts (since high school usually doesnt start until after Labor Day). I wouldn't risk it if I were you unless you can make arrangements with your professors ahead of time.

Possibly the equivelent of Junior year abroad.

Make sure you are over 18, just in case it is high school.

They have study abroad programs in college. It can be basically the same thing. Either way, both high schools and colleges out here in California are commonly starting before Labor Day now. And I though I wanted to become a teacher one day (retirement?). There goes that idea.

i skipped a week of school for burning man last year. totally worth it. like others have said, not much gets done that first week anyways. Definitely let your professors know ahead of time though. I know at my school you can get dropped from your classes if you don't show up during the first week...that wouldn't be fun to come back to.

good luck!

how cute are you? That is a major factor in just about everything...

extremely cute....well, blow off the first week, it's all bullshit anyways...and besides, a couple of pouty looks and a short skirt should raise that grade a couple of points...

sorta cute....get some dork who loves you madly to monitor and take notes of the classes you're missing...give him a peck on the cheek when you get back.

not cute....ah hell, go anyways, and use your sexy accent to weasel an excuse in broken english and plead ignorance...

*editor's note....i am kidding cosmicmirror and if my son or daughter were asking me the question i would without hesitation tell them that school is more important....whether that is ultimately wrong or right, i dont know, but from a traditional standpoint, i think it is, and i dont want to feel guilty if you drop out and turn on...damn i hate being the voice of reason....

**But if you can swing it, it's SO well worth it.

Hell, just tell them you have an assignment from your school at home to write about something special in America and that you are doing it on burningman.

You could even actually write the paper and submit it to classes in both schools!
