Nader strikes me as a clever narcissist.
Hell, he was on CNN last night. That's good publicity. And with all the media talk and general discussion, he's doing some good Nader branding and guerrilla marketing. He'll get booked for lectures and guest appearances, sell more books, etc.
Monkeywrenching the national election process doesn't seem to be a problem to him, which is why I think he's an ass. Anybody with enough money and face time can run for President knowing they can't possibly win, but, after the third stab at it, what does it really accomplish for the American people? If he was serious about running that would be a different story, but I think this is just about increasing his marketability and satisfying his narcissism.

In 2000 Ralphie almost certainly swung the election to Bush (Nader got 97000 votes in FL, and with an expected 2-1 break those votes would have given FL to Gore without a recount). He did it, so he was saying, for principle.
The effect was to inflict us with someone who systematically worked against Raphie's principles.
Which brings us to 2008.

Well, there's the example of Grant, who's pollitical naivitee ended up meaning that it was easy for others to make his one of the most corrupt administrations ever. And GWB didn't have much political experience.CapSmashy wrote:Maybe someone without the experience of playing in the political game might actually benefit the US.

I have not seen any proof that it is almost certain. I would like you to consider that those 97,000 votes that went to Nader would not have gone for Gore but in fact, would not have been cast at all. Therefore, if Nader would not have run, GW would still have been elected.dr.placebo wrote:In 2000 Ralphie almost certainly swung the election to Bush (Nader got 97000 votes in FL, and with an expected 2-1 break those votes would have given FL to Gore without a recount). I think the point that is repeatedly missed is who, if anyone, would have won the votes cast for Nader if he had not run. It could have been Gore, GW or no one at all.
Thanks

We can't say for certain, but the 2-1 split was based on exit polls at the time. There is plenty of additional evidence, but I'm not going to get into a competing cite-fest because it does not prove a damn thing.
You should just read my posts as my best guess based on the evidence available to me.
And Ralph is still a sanctimonious pain in the ass, based on the evidence available to me.

Well, we've been around the block a lot on this, but I'll offer one cite that I find reasonable:
http://www.msnbc.com/m/d2k/g/polls.asp? ... P&state=N1
If you look at the questions answered by Nader supporters, and you concentrate on the answers about Bush and Gore, you find that the positive responses about Bush or Gore were 2 to 1 in Gore's favor. Assume, for the moment, that the negative responses would not have voted. Then Gore would have received enough votes (by far) to overcome the very thin margin in the official vote.
As further support, when Nader supporters did vote for Democrat or Republican for state positions, they favored the Democrat. Also, when asked about liberal/conservative orientation, they strongly favored the liberal. Similar leanings apply for religious right identification, household union membership, abortion, taxation and the environment.
Of course, none of this is proof! At this point, though, we are considering the likely outcomes of a Nader candidacy, and at least what I've cited is reasonably objective evidence.
What I hope is that Nader's showing is weak enough to not matter, as in the 2004 election. Given the current poll numbers showing another close race (regardless of whether Clinton or Obama get the nod), then it leaves me with a renewed distaste for Nader's political judgement.

Ralph Nader is nothing more than a publicity seeking whore who entered the 2008 presidential race for the sole purpose of getting media facetime. He is no more a viable presidential candidate than Lyndon LaRouche and his chances of winning, especially since he bailed out on the Green Party are less than the proverbial snowball's chance in hell...and I ain't referring to Hell, Michigan either.EricMagic wrote:Ralph Nadar is one of the Greatest Humans in History.

As for this bullshit of Nader being one of the greatest humans in history....a review of his achievements shows his tendency to slut himself to the media in the name of whatever flavor of the week cause that he thinks will get him the most media play. A quick reference check shows he's founded all sorts of projects and foundations that have taken off like a 747 missing 3 engines...he's still riding the wave of publicity he had from taking on GM over the alleged safety aspects of the Corvair. If the guy actually gave a damn about America he would immediately withdraw from the race and stop this latest self-promo tour that he's milking for all it's worth. He ain't presidential material, he sure as fuck ain't an "Extreme Participant of Society"....Nader is nothing more than a fucking political leech and a sorry sonofabitch.
By the way the "Anyone who is against him is someone I regard with great suspicion comment" gains you a hearty "Fuck You" salute.

Nader was a spoiler and delivered Florida and the nation to W in 2000. While he is expected to garner a very small % of votes, why risk another four years of failed Republician Bush policies that have brought death, destruction and abrogation of civil liberties to America Shame on you Ralph Nader. There are better less destructive (and less narcissistic) ways to get your point accross than mounting a futile bid for the presidency.

I still think Ralph Nadar is great!
He is brave enough to go against the typical mindset of his day, and he had the intellect, and the stamina to do something about items he truly believed in. Notice that I never claimed he was perfect.
