Starshade Tents - playa proof?

Post by roamer » Tue Feb 26, 2008 8:59 pm

Does anybody have any experience with 'StarShade tents'?
Silly question really, considering the pics I've seen of the eplaya bar!

But, how robust are they to the playa winds? Is the roof high enough to provide cool temperature inside? I'm considering modifying the arches with some homemade camo-net type material.

I've been ogling at them online since I saw a few on playa last year but want to know how they stand up before I fork out the considerable amount of money.

Anybody have one they want to sell?

Mozy Bonez is the expert. He's taken his to the playa two years running.

It would be cool to have an underground fort at BM - too much work for a week though.

I think you just have to know the right explosive charge and the depth to plant it. Right?

Correct.

Carving out a bunker in the Playa by using high explosives would not be too difficult. A double row of charges set to fire on a parallel series should do quite nicely to make a rectangularish hole

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I did a topic search before posting - honest. And I've always associated the term 'shade structure' to mean something made from scratch or modified, like a dome or vehicle lean-to, rather than something purchased.

Wish I had more time available in the US to build a shade structure but instead, it looks like I'm gonna buy one of these StarShade beauties.

OK, so now I know where I've been going wrong with my searches - displaying results as topics rather than posts. Doh! Lesson learnt.
